Is hating shaker glasses being beer elitist?

I started my early years in Vermont drinking Magic Hat, Long Trail and Shed out of standard shaker glasses. Of course, as we all know...craft beers are served in everything from tulips to willi bechers, tekus and God knows what next. As craft beer has moved away from shaker glasses, I guess I've kind of gone along for the ride.

I sometimes see the beer **** pics of a nice beer poured in a shaker glass and I kind of wince. And I dunno, I kind of feel bad about that reaction. A bit elitist on my part?

    What about you?

    If so you're not alone.

But then I don't consider not liking the shaker pint glass to be elitist. Rather it's a matter of simple common sense. My sense of aromas is greatly enhanced by the shape of certain other glasses. That improves the overall package of flavors since much of what we think we taste is actually produced by the sense of smell.

Being cheap, if I'm spending good money on a flavorful beer I want to enjoy it as much as possible and shaker pints, originally designed to use as cocktail shakers, just don't do it as well as several other glass shapes.

Edit: If someone were to accuse me of being a snob for not wanting my beer in the shaker pint, I'd just smile and say quietly "It's a matter of personal taste."

Although I have a couple pint glasses from a couple breweries I find, I almost 100% of the time drink out of a tulip/snifter/teku.

I don't think its elitist at all....Unless if your at a buddies, bar and you ask to have a glass re-poured into one of the other style glasses...Almost none of the bars/pubs around my town serve in tulips....Always pints.

I request non-pint glass options while ordering at bars all the time. Usually they can oblige.

The pour might be smaller, but I gladly pay the same price...since I'll be enjoying the beer way more.

I will always love shaker pints. I use fancy glasses all the time, but I also often crave pouring a nice brown ale into a shaker pint and keeping my pinky nice and tucked.

I have no problem with the Shaker Pint. I throw everyone that talks shit on the shaker, and how it's the spawn of Satan, into the same category as the people who non-stop shit on AB-InBev and then go stand in line, for god knows how long, to get some BCBS. If you're being that fucking picky about glassware you need to reevaluate some of your life choices.

To answer your titled question; Yes.

You may have a preferred vessel for a beer, but when you start judging others or raising a stink about 'this beer is being served in the wrong glass;' then yes, it becomes elitist. As the above referenced link stated; let's drop the pretense, have fun, and drink the damn beer.

I feel a theme day coming on : Shaker Glass Saturday .

What can I say, every now and then I just want to get out the vintage glassware :slight_frown:. And sometimes the feel in the hand makes up for any loss of aroma. They are still a part of my rotation.

Depends. Not every beer (or occasion) requires a tulip or other fine glass, and I do not always care that much. I will try to grab a better glass for beers which I wish to give my full attention, but for the common, end-of-day drink? Shakers are fine.

I don't feel elitist using a tulip glass but I'm not going to take it to the bar with me.

Glassware (in my humble opinion) is just for fun, for the most part. If the beer fits, it's all good! Do some glasses highlight looks, aroma, taste? Perhaps. But are you gonna lose any kind of clout or respect to the beer or yourself for using the "wrong" glass...hell no! Or at least you shouldn't. However!!! A fine glass may be rewarded here and there :grinning:! Cheers in whatever vessel you prefer! (And for the record, I prefer a nonic or tulip, but am a huge fan of thistles.)

Personally I drink my beer out of tulip glasses at home and prefer beer to be served in nonic pint glasses when out, but I'm not going to make a fuss if my beer is served in a shaker pint. At least you're drinking (hopefully good) beer.
