Fifteen years ago this morning I was on leave, and having just finished a difficult seven mile run was walking to the front door when my neighbor burst from his home said shouted that a plane had just crashed into the WTC. I hurried into my own house just before the second plane impacted and stood transfixed before the TV, staring in shock at the carnage, knowing full well my world had changed forever. The base immediately went into lockdown and I was recalled to work. My wife was away with our young son caring for her ailing father and I was left to worry about how I would secure my then 15 year old freshman, who was across town at school.

Fast forward five years and some change, and that same kid was asleep with his platoon on a remote mountain top on the Afghan-Pakistani border, when in the pre-dawn morning, shrouded by darkness and mountain fog, 200+ Taliban assaulted his outpost. Isolated from any help, they had to stand their ground without any assistance. Precision training kicked in and they beat back the attack, inflicting heavy casualties while miraculously incurring none of their own. Their platoon sergeant, a hero in my book, was eventually awarded the Silver Star for his remarkable leadership that morning. A few months later, the same scenario played out for a platoon from their sister battalion, only this time the unit was nearly overrun and suffered a number of casualties.

Sorry for the melodrama, it’s a seminal moment in all our lives so I’m certain each of us have our stories to tell for this tragic day, who’s significance will continue to grip us, undiminished by time.
