Have to imagine there's a decently strong football fan contingent here, which begs the question:

What's your go-to game day beer? And why?

For me: Deschutes Black Butte. Big, creamy mouthfeel yet light enough in body and ABV to make it totally sessionable over the course of an afternoon and evening. Plus, it goes really well with football foods/snacks.

Runner up: AleSmith's Nut Brown for many of the same reasons.

I think Game-Day beer and Autumn beer are pretty analogous to me. That said.... can't wait to crack some SN Oktoberfest, Smutty Old Brown Dog, and Nightshift Awake (day games) during Giants football this year. Go Big Blue!

Agreed. Bought a 12 pack of SN Oktoberfest a few weeks back and have been saving it for football season. Same goes for New Glarus Staghorn. Go Pack Go!

SNPA is usually my go to. Deeper into fall I like kicking back with a Pumking, SN Harvest Ale, or St. Bernardus.

Tailgating at games I'll drink something heavier in alcohol content so I don't put as much liquid in me, since I don't want to have to go to the bathroom constantly during the game.

SNPA is classic - I've been prone to kill a sixer on Sunday afternoons.

Last weekend was a decent amount of Little Citra. Last year it was Fist City. Like a nice Pale that you can put down a few of. Go Bears!!

Speaking of Rev, Bottoms Up Wit is a nice, easy-drinking game day beer as well.

Since I mentioned food pairings: Your go-to game day beer and food pairing?

I'll stick with Black Butte, but through in some nutty cheese, pretzels, and a beer-cheese dipping sauce and I'm good to go.

Easy for me, NFL season and first of November starts the Highland Brewing's "Cold Mountain" release which is a tap backed by 15 kegs in storage at my local Sports Bar. Will last till first part of December. Sadly, my home town, Asheville, loves its Cold Mountain.

Edit: I tip well, usually get the Bar tender to hang a paper napkin over the tap handle that say's "Temporarily Out" but he ignores it and just keeps pouring it anyway. Owner's knows me and my obsession and he laughs, shakes his head and continues to circulate at the bar.

Depends on what style I'm goin' with.
For a pale ale: Lagunitas 12th of Never if I'm looking for a 12 pack to share, if its just for me then Pipework's Lizard King

Seasonal: Buckledown's Oktoberfest Bier - Excellent Oktoberfest, rich in carmel and toffee-like flavors while still maintaining a light lager-like body.

Brown Ale: In case I wanna go with a beer matching the color of my favorite Bear, Around the Bend's Puffing Billy has an excellent nutty profile as well as nice subtle notes of milk chocolate put out by the addition of coacoa nibs, basically tastes like liquid peanut butter :grinning:

IPA: Well, my store just got in Pipework's Mandarina Dragonet so case closed

Sour: Don't often have sours with a ball game on but in case I think otherwise, I'd probably would wanna go with a darker barrel-aged sour and my pick would probably Like Mind's Flora, aged in red wine barrels with Brett. Refreshing and warming at the same time.

Keepin' it local for my Bears :grinning:

    ........DAAAAAAAAAA BEEEEAAAAARRSSS! :grinning: :grinning: :grinning:

I'll usually start with something drinkable but nicely hoppy, lots of different west coast IPAs will start me off well. That being said, usually if I'm sitting down with buddies, it's a multi hour drinking "session" with lots of "woohoo, touchdown, chug!" moments. That usually leads me to moving to AAL's/Marzen/Vienna Lager/Amber Lager so it's easy drinking. Depends on what I have handy and what store I would stop at on the way.

In the Fall it's any number of marzens or pumpkin ales, winter more nitro stouts or lower ABV stouts. Could name any number of breweries and beer names but it always depends on my mood.

Narragansett or an Oktoberfestbier of some kind....

(or even better, Narragansett Fest but apparently the folks over at Narragansett are stupid and killed it off)

8 bit pale ale, cheap and in a can, for the early season.
Towards the end of the season when it gets cold I either go with buffalo sweat or hibernation ale depending on what I'm craving.

Games start relatively early here.. FBS as a combo coffee/beer fix. Beyond that, sad to say, import dos equis actually lets me survive the day all the way through.. It's sad some of the better IPAs are 7+%.. With the entrance of FW into my state, canned PIVO is becoming a beer fridge staple. Even at 2 months old, the essence of the beer seems to last much longer than the dry hopped nature of IPAs. For that, I can appreciate it.

To add, locally Marble Pilsner (a german pils) sitting at 4.7% adds what I feel is nearly an identical flavor to FW Pivo. So that one is a must. La Cumbre has a pale lager, lightly named BEER. Super solid. I often fear putting fruits and such in said beers, so I do tend to reach for that macro dos equis (sue me). It does all seem to balance out as I have started to totally evade anything 5.5% and up for sessions.. It may start with FBS, but that's the end of that stuff lol

I do love the rise of the APAs that can sit at 5% and can give that hoppy edge. No go for me on the session IPA designated beers. No thanks to paying the same price for what feels like something that has been severely watered down... Now your 12th of Never pale ale type Lagunitas beer have a new true spot in my heart imho. In general, nothing beats a craft lager/pilsner with a crisp edge and actual flavor. Low ABV beasts, I call them.

I've been splitting a four pack of Kentucky Bourbon Stouts with a buddy. Being a Browns fan you need something with a high ABV, and dark like the pits of your despair when watching them.

Something like Sixpoint Crisp, a low abv IPA, Boddingtons or Becks is what i go for.
My heart is still broken. That fest was one of if not the best on the east coast.

Dude, Around the Bend's brown ale is fantastic. Picked up a sixer a few weeks ago and am savoring every last bottle. Have to check out Buckledown's Oktoberfest - especially given how solid their session pale ale.
