Gotten my hands on a can of Heady Topper, Focal Banger, and Crusher for the first time and am looking very forward to my first experience with each. Best to follow the brewer's instructions and drink straight from the can? Or go with a glass pour like I normally would when consuming my favorite liquid? Seems like a handful of BAs have a little bit of experience with these beers, so there might be some strong opinions one way or the other.

Do a decanted pour, leaving behind the stuff that obscures the flavor.

Personally I enjoy drinking beer from the can. But I don't think you should be more/less inclined to do so based on what Alchemist suggests. It's not as if every other (D)IPA must be poured except Alchemist offerings. So i guess do whatever you usually do with canned (D)IPA.

This is the crossroads... where our attachment to "brewer's intention" and attachment to "drinking from glassware" contradict each other and cause our heads to explode... just like the can art tells our heads to.

Any way you drink it you likely will love it. Try it a variety of ways. For me? I pour into a good glass and get a really good sniff or three after pouring and releasing those aromas.

My assumption is that from the glass is "better" (I've only had Heady once, and I think I did both), but sure, why not try a little out of the can, out of respect for the brewer?

Then if you decide Kimmich is full of it, the next time you have Heady, go all the way into the glass.

For Alchemist beers I pour all but the last inch and a half in a glass. From the can is too constricting.

I prefer a glass, but sometimes will drink out of the can for convenience. To me, it's definitely better to pour it in a proper glass for the aroma, appearance etc. Sometimes I get a little "can taste" when drinking straight from the can, and won't enjoy it as much.

When I open my brewery, cans will say:

Decant from the can into a brewery-branded Teku, chill in the fridge to 53.8F, then decant back into the can and enjoy

Wouldn't that become known as "re-canting "? :grinning:
(As opposed to "recanting " - which you'd want to do if too much CO2 is lost and your beer is consumed flat.)

    Or perhaps "deux-canting."

From a completely sanitary perspective, sucking the juice from a can (of any beverage) that you don't know where it has been is mildly insalubrious.

I choose to clean the 'pop-top' area as best I am able and then decant that sucker into a glass I know it is clean and can garner the proper head and aroma profile.

At a bar, nearly always from the can. If it's a super old tasting can, then I request a glass. This doesn't happen often.
At home, I sip from the can first and if it's perfect, I don't pour. If it's a bit off or old tasting, then it goes into a wide Duvel tulip. This is my favorite for Alchemist beers.

Drank my first can of heady in a glass and it tasted awesome. Drank the second from the can in Maui a month later and seemed to taste even better. Don't necessarily know if thats really the cans doing, or the setting, perhaps I even preferred heady with a month age on it. Who knows. All I do know is that regardless of drinking vessel, its a fantastic beer!
