Finally got around to trying Derivation and must say I thought it was fantastic. Lots of cocoa goodness early on and then vanilla later as it warmed, just a touch of cinnamon throughout. Not sure I'd buy it again at the price point but definitely worth trying once.

Just had Derivation 6 this past weekend....it was the best beer I ever had. It made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. I initially tasted the vanilla but as I took my time sipping, the cocoa came through more and more. It was an amazing experience. The flavor just melts on your tongue, all the way down your throat. I know that sounds weird because it's liquid so how can it melt, but the flavors just seem to melt slowly in your mouth and throat. Absolutely zero alcohol burn, no thick, cough syrup-like texture. It is the most delicious liquid I've ever had. Best shared, not just for the price, but the experience too. And the Cellar is an awesome place to drink. The staff are the most knowledgeable beer people I've ever met. If you think you know a lot about beer, go talk to their staff and learn a thing or two or three.

Crazy thing is how long D6 lasted. If it lasts longer, I might go in for a second tasting when I pick up my Society beer.

Disagree about the price point being great but it certainly does help it stick around for a while.

Why would you ever trade $500 worth of beer or spend that much money on a single beer?

    Silly.

You realize being able to drink one for "just" $50 in the Cellar is what perpetuates and accelerates the "having to trade $500 worth of beer for a single bottle" nonsense right?

$50 is hardly a decent price point for any beer is the point.

Economics seems to be difficult for you so I will leave it at that.

What should the price point be then?
If it's purely economics they could be charging more, yes the supply might last even longer, but they would certainly reap more profits assuming they didn't price it to the point where they never got rid of it, it spoils and they have to put it on fire sale or dump it.

Cool dude. Nobody is forcing you to dictate the level of fun beer is. I know a nice place right down the street in Maplewood that has overpriced bowling available if you don't want to save yourself some dough the next time you are in St Louis.

I felt the same way at first $50 for a bottle of beer?! But when you think about what goes into that special batch of stout. They are not going to shop n save to buy vanilla extract, Hershey cocoa, and powdered off brand cinnamon. They are using top notch ingredients. Plus each batch takes up to two years to develop and blend. People spend hundreds of dollars on bottles of wine and I have drank them. None of them compare to the complex flavors and satisfaction I have had from a top notch barrel aged stout.

To quote Inigo Montoya, "I do not think it means what you think it means". $50 is high in your opinion. Let's leave it at that.

In the grand scheme of things, maybe, but Marietta Ave is more of a hop forward beer
