The New School IPA

    The more I drink, the more I'm finding myself really enjoying the subtle hoppy beers. They are not aggressive or bitter at all and you can drink a few and the flavor gets better and better.
    Heady, Another One, Pseudo Sue, and a few Hill Farmstead beers hit it perfectly.

    I think I know what OP is talking about. I really do love the NE IPA tropical juice bombs, but I think I like the IPAs like Heady Topper the best. I don't know exactly how to describe it, but I find the NE IPAs that are just juice bombs to be a bit one-dimensional. I like Heady Topper because it has a certain greenness, a rawness, about it that reminds you that you're still a drinking a lupulin-laden, yeasty, hoppy-as-hell beer. It still has a bite of bitterness. It has the elements of what makes West Coast IPAs great for what they are, yet without being the syrupy sweet malt bombs they tend to be, and yet it's not quite total mango/pineapple juice, either.

    Omnipollo Fatamorgana is another great example of what I mean. I really, really loved that one.

    Holy Mountain impressed me a lot more than Cloudburst. Cloudburst was still great, though.

    I'm sure the forums would have exploded back in the 80s and 90's when the American IPAs first started coming around and everyone bent on their high horse saying there's only one IPA and it's English cursing the American IPAs to high hell swearing they must not be IPAs..

    But that did happen. That's why the American IPA sub category came about.

    And then came the West Coast American IPA vs. East Coast American IPA throw down (where the folks from the Mid-West said: hey, what about us?). And now it appears that we have the so called "NE" style IPA debate and in this thread there is even a newer style "New School" American IPA (whatever that really is).

    I suppose I should have mention Session IPAs in the above and maybe I should have mentioned ...

    Boy, keeping up with IPAs is really challenging.

    Yeah, that's how it ultimately wound up. But there were definitely people making the argument that an IPA was an English style, and these were really big APAs.

    It's really all up to the homebrewers (as it's always been :wink:). If there are enough entries year after year, and they keep being knocked for being out of style, then something will be done about it. Either a new substyle, or the original one will be broadened.

    Could have been some debittered black malt. A little goes a long way for color, and won't add too much flavor. My two cents, but only the brewer knows for sure

    I don't think I'm going to click into another thread with IPA in the title.

    The same people commenting about how they dislike the new turbid, fruit forward IPA, and claim that they, and only they, know what a "TRUE" IPA is -- all others and their taste buds be damned.

    Like with all else, the IPA issue is not one that can be reduced to clear black and white. I get the point that some of the "NE IPAs" lack balance and nuance, have a muddled yeasty flavor or an overwhelming fruity sweetness. But to say that ALL NE IPAs lack balance and depth is laughably absurd, a total and absolute joke. Like a bigger joke than what's going on in presidential politics. Like a bigger joke than the biggest joke in MAD Magazine. Like a bigger joke than Justin Bieber.

    Come on.

    Two Hearted and All Day IPA and Green and Focal Banger and Sleeper Street can all be fantastic beers without diminishing the quality of one another, or offending the taste buds of those who prefer one over the other.

    yeah, I've used Weyermann Carafa Special for a few homebrews, but in a quality that did still give a mild roast flavor.

    Personally I don't like the term "Black IPA", but the hoppy dark beers that I like do have roasted flavor, and typically have more earthy hop flavors rather than fruity. Like Stone SSR Ale.

    It always cracks me up when I read people get so upset over a poster liking a particular style of beers, especially IPAs. Lately everyone seems upset because hazy IPAs are popular. Usually the people who are critical say something about "try drinking other beers", as if liking IPAs means you dislike other styles, and makes me wonder if those people take their own advice and try a different style IPA.

    Love unfiltered IPAs. Love "west coast" IPAs, and I love the middle ground like sip of sunshine.

    Off to drink a shout now.

    Agreed, until I met Oskar Blues Bayside (still some roast but not as much). Since SSR is gone now, it satisfies the void when I need a Black IPA/ Cascadian Dark, whatever the style may be called.

    If you look back and actually read through these posts on this thread, it seems to me only a few people got "upset". And if it upsets you, why post? Not mentioning any names. There is nothing wrong with comparing and contrasting, or liking / disliking any style respectfully. Nobody is threatening anyones Mom here. It's just beer.
