As we go from one season (outside work on house) to the next (inside work on house), I will drink beers.

A beautiful morning shaping up in the Windward Islands. I think we will do some more exploring on what looks to be another sunny (hot) day - cheers!

Last night. Smuttynose The Stallion. Smuttynose makes such great beer. My underrated or least talked about great brewery. Their Robust porter and Old Brown Dog are the two best in their respective categories to me.

Good morning BA, have a great Saturday! Supposed to rain again today, so I will probably do some homebrewing related stuff, and I still need to check another Costco for those for the Stone IPA 4 pack boxes. I want one so bad.

    Beer this morning:

Delicious sweet stout as always, glad it’s back in season. Flavors of milk chocolate, cocoa, caramel, toffee, brown sugar, toasted dark bread, light coffee/vanilla, and a touch of herbal hops. Light herbal hop and roast bitterness on the finish. Great creamy/silky medium bodied mouthfeel. One of my favorite seasonals. Will definitely brew a clone of this at some point. They don't use lactose in this beer at all, it has 10 specialty malts to to get the mouthfeel and complexity. They claim the OG is 1.080; so for a 6.1% beer, that is a really high FG. Yet it is never cloyingly sweet.

Top tier pumpkin ale! Flavors of big pumpkin, clove, allspice, caramel, brown sugar, gingerbread, toast, cinnamon, nutmeg, and herbal spice earthiness. Balancing herbal/spice bitterness against sweetness on the finish. Medium bodied; balanced malt creaminess and spice stickiness in the mouthfeel. Lightly drying spice finish. Glad we get these in state now, one of the best pumpkin ales I've had. This is probably the most authentic actual pumpkin-fruit forward beer I have had; with an amazing balance of spices.

Grabbed a random single yesterday, still tasting awesome! Looks darker this year on color. Flavors of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, peach, mango, lemon/orange peel, citrus rind, and pine hops; with moderate honey/bready/light caramel malts; herbal, floral, and grassy hop earthiness. Strong pine/citrus rind bitterness. Medium-full body; very sticky/resinous, creamy, and slightly slick in the mouthfeel. Increasing resin dryness after the finish; no hop astringency. I need to buy this when it released again next year, but it is holding up awesome as usual with most Sierra Nevada IPAs, even after 5 months.

Grabbed another bottle this week to see how it's doing, still plenty on the shelf now. This is tasting awesome! Flavors of big milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, toffee, vanilla, molasses, toasted dark bread, and light smoke/char malts; with some woody and light pepper/piney hops. Bittersweet balanced roast/earthy hop finish. Medium-full bodied; great creamy/silky mouthfeel with light-moderate sticky/chalky roast/hop notes as well. Definitely more toned down on the hops than I remember; with a silkier mouthfeel and less drying from the roast/hop flavors. Definitely worth picking up again soon. I can still buy 2015 RIS on the shelf so I am not worried about it.

    Cheers

Good Saturday morning, BA's. I couldn't post this last night due to hotel wi-fi issues. I flew down to North Carolina yesterday for an annual family/Church reunion held today.

Started the day at Newark Airport with a Brooklyn Sorachi Ace.

At dinner, I enjoyed a couple pints of Daniel's Irish Setter Red Ale brewed in nearby Wilmington NC by Cape Fear Brewing Company. It paired very well with shrimp and grits.

Back at the motel, about the only thing working properly was the refrigerator so I finished with a couple of super-malty IPA's brewed in Boone NC by Appalachian Mountain Brewery.

I'm looking forward to today's festivities, which will be dry until I have dinner with my kids in Chapel Hill tonight. Have a great day, everyone!

Anyhoooo.....going to get in a hike this morning, then stop at a couple more thrift stores....you know, because you can never have too many glasses! Ha!

So what's in a name after all, I don't care what they call this one I like it . . .

    3.9/5
    look: 3.5 | smell: 3.5 | taste: 4 | feel: 4 | overall: 4.25

Light golden appearance with good white cap and lacing.

Rich, citrusy hop aroma with notes of floral and spice.

Taste is straight forward clean hops with a bit of sharpness and spicy/floral sensation. Finish is clean with some lingering bitterness in the aftertaste. Not much, just enough to notice.

Texture is fuller than medium but more medium than full.

Overall this is a tasty effort that pairs well with food. Less hoppily sharp than some IPAs, mild flavors that are well integrated in a complex whole. Compares favorably with a well made German product with American flair and sophistication.
