Disclaimer: I'm not starting this thread to bash Revolution or any of their beers. I've been drinking their beers for probably five years, and I really, really enjoy them. It's the brewery I've spent the most money on as a beer drinker.

Recently, I picked up two six-packs of Unsessionable because it's amazing and can sometimes fly off the shelves unexpectedly. I eagerly cracked my first can, and I noticed that it foamed up more than usual. No big deal--maybe the cans were disturbed during travel. I poured it into a pint glass, and upon taking my first sip, I detected something off about the flavor. The hops weren't popping like I remember, and there was an off-flavor in the background. As the beer warmed and I drank more, a strong flavor of phenol (which to my palate tasted like plastic) began to dominate until it's all I could taste. I grabbed another beer from the other six-pack, and it was the exact same experience.

I emailed Revolution, and they sent me a gift certificate for $30, which I really appreciated. I wrote it off as just a bad batch.

However, last night I was at a taphouse and ordered an Anti-Hero, and the same phenol flavor dominated the beer. I couldn't even finish drinking it.

So, here's my question: am I going crazy? I've had a number of beers (from other breweries) between these two experiences, and they've all tasted normal. Has anyone else noticed this?

Plastic/phenols are either from a wild yeast infection,or could be a mutation if they used the yeast for too many generations. I'm surprised it made it through the sensory panel, though, if that was the case

Beyond wild yeast infection, plastic off flavors can be a result of contamination in the brewery due to exposure to common plastics (e.g., styrene), lacquers or plasticizers.

@Hopper did you make specific mention of the plastic off flavor to the folks of Revolution? If so, did they specifically respond to you on this topic with an explanation?

    Cheers!

Have they ever made an announcement over the various BA Genes being all infected over the last several years?

plastic is horrible if you have ever tasted it. flat, it tastes and seems just like liquid plastic. It has a way of ending the beer. ohmy. It makes the beer have no finish at all. I swear it's plastic. I am happy to see the recall. The brewer I'm sure would definitely not want you to have that and you hardly ever see it. Rare . Most of the time for phe nols gone wrong you see beer that sat on the trub too long and that's bandaid. OR you see autolysis. dead yeast.

Wow, that really is a bummer. I've just started seeing a lot more of their stuff on Long Island in the past few weeks. I hope this recall does not substantially alter that.

At least they've acknowledged it and are recalling the beers. Wonder how they are going to deal with the beer that was bad and distro'ed to the East Coast, Wisconsin, etc.

I bet it affects all of it, if you look at the dates. Seems like it went on for about 2 months. Yikes! So much for trying to score some Unsessionable.

I'm drinking one right now to see what it's about, because the first can from the sizer didn't seem that off. While it may have slight Belgian characteristics that might be unexpected for this type of beer, it is NOT infected and undrinkable. Personally, I'm going to enjoy this six pack and keep an eye out for a new batch in the future.

Sorry, I wasn't clear enough. I'm sure you're right that some of the beer that made its way east is affected. I just meant that I hope this recall does not affect their ability to continue their eastward distribution expansion. I want to keep seeing Revolution beers in my neighborhood in the future!

I had a couple of Anti Heros on tap last Thursday, I was ready to blame dirty tap lines for the off taste. I love this brewery, hope they get this under control quickly!
