What are some nationally available (or available in PA) "dank" Pale Ales, IPAs, or double IPAs? I've realized that is the one quality I really enjoy in a hoppy beer and would like some options. Thanks!

Dark Horse - Smells Like A Safety Meeting. Supposedly, original name was Smells Like Weed. Good, whatever the name! : )

The local distributor started carrying about 10 of their beers and that is not one of them, unfortunately.

Will be tough, depending on where in PA you are. If you're in eastern PA I believe you can get Carton. Their O'Dub and the variants are dank. Stone Enjoy By is dank. Every once in a while I'll see Hop Concept on draft in my area. They have one called Dank & Sticky that is really dank. Neshaminy Creek makes some dank IPAs as well. Not what I would call dank, but if you're into the dank flavor you might like Neshaminy Creek County Line IPA, but that is more of a piney flavor. And of course there is Tired Hands, which may be available in your area.

I'm a fan of Avery's Raja. Nice 8% Double IPA and definitely dank! you know you need a Colorado beer for that.. haha

Another dank Colorado beer is Ska Hop Ivy pale ale.

Came to say ska modus hoperandi. The rep described it to me as weed made love to a grapefruit in a pine forest. So true.

Stone Enjoy By, or anything hopped heavily with Simcoe.

I love Raja but I wouldn't call it dank. I consider it more the New England style juicy flavor (and it must be fresh as that stuff falls off).

I second ska modus hoperandi and to me, I would add elysian space dust imo as well.

Sometimes. Simcoe can also have a floral/tropical quality. Anything with Apollo/Columbus is usually the ticket. A recent batch of Columbus pellets I bought from Yakima Valley smelled like straight chronic.

Every individual has their own unique palate and will therefore ‘react’ differently to the various hops used in brewing.

For example when I homebrew a beer that features Simcoe I personally perceive pine aroma/flavor.

If by “dank” @dwarke means a marijuana aroma/flavor then I am in 100% agreement with @TriggerFingers that a beer that features Columbus hops (e.g., dry hopped with Columbus hops) will be your best bet.

An example here would be Hill Farmstead Harlan which I posted about in a past thread:

    “Harlan IPA

Harlan is Edward’s slightly more aggressive alter-ego. Dry Hopped exclusively with Columbus hops.

Hill Farmstead Harlan smelled/tasted like marijuana to my palate.

    Cheers!

If you are western PA you should be able to get Fat Head's Head Hunter IPA.

Definitely don't get dank from Head Hunter or Dirt Wolf (both great beers though).

Same here, I have never perceived "dank" in either of those beers (and I agree they are great beers).

    Cheers!

I have seen Knee Deep Breaking Bud on tap in PA but I am unsure if the bottled version is for sale,

I have not ordered this beer since I am personally not a fan of dank but this beer is brewed using CTZ (Columbus) hops so it likely has a dank quality to it.

Maybe your local retail beer distributor can special order this beer for you? Make sure to specify you are only interested in buying this beer if he can obtain fresh product.

    Cheers!

Old school meets new school in this fresh approach to the classic IPA. At 50 IBU’s and 6.7% ABV, Breaking Bud features the restrained bitterness and alcohol of a classic IPA with newer tropical fruit hop flavors and aromas of Mosaic. Also in the hop mix are Simcoe and CTZ, creating layers of mango, passion fruit, pine and dank. A malt bill with a pinch of crystal malt and a hefty dose of flaked wheat keeps the beer crisp while adding flavor complexity.

I'm sure we just taste things differently (which isn't uncommon).
Hopped with Columbus and Simcoe hops, Head Hunter is plenty dank to me.

I cringed when I heard the word "dank".... always brings up some interesting comments and pisses off some posters. haha

That being said, just last night a friend balked when drinking Jack's Abbey's India pale lager. He had a big smile on his face and said that really reminded him of something.... wonder what it was
