This is the exact opposite of the current thread "I forgot how good that was..."

"As a self-diagnosed ticker, sometimes I am "forced" to grab beer I've visited previously...

Had an Abita Purple Haze last week on a date night, and man, it was bad. No back-and-forth awfulness-then-tastiness that I get with hops. Just bad overall.

Anyone else revisit an old beer to remember "this is shit"?"

I decided to revisit Budweiser following the Super Bowl this year, because Peyton. It was not quite as bad as I remembered, but still one of the worst beers I have ever tried.

    I liked Purple Haze, BTW.

I am not a ticker and I revisit breweries and brands on a regular basis. I often forget if a beer is average or surprisingly above average, but I rarely forget if a beer is exceptional. One thing I never do is forget that a beer was truly bad though.

I thought you tickers kept tiny, worn pocket notebooks to remind you of these details.

Abita Purple Haze use to be Witbier with raspberries, then they changed it to Lager. That might be a part of it, but IMO 99% of everything they make is pretty bad or mediocre.

True the strawberry lager was also horrendous.

    Easy. Heineken, or 8.6.

    Bud in comparison is 'okay'.

So funny, last time I had my judgement confirmed in this way it also was an Abita beer that this man was raving about, Andygator, at Golden Rail a year or two ago. I won't embarrass this man here other than to say he is someone whose judgement I instantly trusted. I remembered Andygator as being almost an undrinkable mess. @doomXsaloon and I got a bottle and tried it whattaya know still an undrinkable mess.

I'm a ticker, but fortunately my memory is strong enough at this point that I have avoided revisiting bad beers. It helps that I rarely, if ever, revisit a beer that isn't a part of a short list anyway.

Pliny the Younger is pretty unremarkable. I can remember thinking "wow, alcohol and hops, what a waste of time"

    This may ruffle some feathers.

I for one will not understand the nostalgia and love for most Genny stuff. During my limited time in upstate NY--I never got it. Sure grandad and dear old dad may have loved it--my dad loved Hamm's--but man that stuff is just not worth wasting time or calories on. :grimacing::grimacing::grimacing::grimacing::grimacing::grimacing::grimacing::grimacing:

I'm almost certain someone will mention Southern Tier Creme Brulee. Also, I don't usually try beers I really dislike again, unless the reason I disliked it was from brewer error like off flavors.

Definitely makes sense not going back to what you know you don't like.

For me the issue has become really when I go back to some of the beers I didn't like when I first really started looking for variety in beer. My palate was expanding and I remember trying some beers that I didn't like, but then after a period of time (years in some cases) I go back and find out I actually like it now.

But then it's that other case when I tried a beer that I initially did not like, and then years later I go back and have again, thinking my palate has changed quite a bit and might like it now, and it just ends up being as terrible as I remember.

Bigfoot. Fresh I didn't like it. With a year age on it I didn't like it. Really have no interest in trying a 3rd time. I've learned to like a lot of Barleywines now as well, but this one is just too bitter for me.

I had tried Mother of all Storms, but I found it to be way too cloying. It kind of turned me off from English barleywines. This is coming from someone who likes sweet mead.

I imagine I'll revisit some beers I wasn't so excited initially in a few years. Right now, I'm so wide-eyed, relatively-new that I don't see the point is revisiting something I know I didn't think when I could use the cash to try something new.

I take that back. Boulevard Early Riser season is quickly approaching. I really didn't like it last year, but I'll most likely give it another go in the new year just because it's local and a coffee beer.

Slight detour on the thread, but as an advocate for retrying beers from time to time, I decided to take this thread and opportunity to see if I remembered how bad this was...

And yep, this small sample was medicinally sweet (wasn't about to spring the $$ for this beer I feared I disliked).

Founders also has the antithesis of this for me - Rübæus. I found that very distasteful originally, but it's grown on me.

Either way, I am glad to see those at least willing to give a "bad beer from their past" another chance, even if it leads to posts in this thread (which I note seems a bit slower than it's progenitor ).

For me, it was probably Molson XXX - I had found memories of it from road trips to Montreal in the early-90s when I was an undergrad and I thought it was pretty good... boy was I wrong, strong fusel alcohol flavor and smell (must have been the combo of cheap/exchange rate, high ABV at the time, and lack of other good options at the time).

Re Creme Brulee, I think it's great as a dessert beer. And it HAS to be shared. Otherwise it is like beetus in a bottle.

Sours in general. I don't get it. It tastes like something that's not finished.

I had my first one last year at the Sac Craft Beer Summit. There were 160 breweries so there were no lines except for Russian River and Rare Barrel which is all sours.

Waited in a long line. Did not like.
