What's the difference between an American porter and a robust porter?

    I was going to brew a brewing classic style porter just to have a good one on tap at the house. I was also checking BJCP to enter the beer in a comp and all I saw were an english porter and a american porter. Would a robust porter be the same as an american porter? Brown beers arent my forte.....this will be one of my first.

    "Robust" would be a description of the beer, and not a style in itself.

    Robust Porter was a style in the BJCP 2008 guidelines, and was basically a higher gravity version of what they called Brown Porter. The Robust Porter category also covered what's now (in 2015 guidelines) called American Porter. And 2015 English Porter basically replaces 2008 Brown Porter.
