Before you can even fancy a flight, your beer must first take form in wood foeders where wild ideas and wheat malt meet. Welcome to New Beer Sunday! Today is the day and this is the place for you to TRY a new beer and TELL us about it. Beer is appreciated in each of five categories. Appearance, nose, taste, mouthfeel and overall impression. One of the nice things about beer tasting is that it too takes a form. For some it is the same each time, like a template. For others it's a chance to get jiggy and really let your hair down. It's "the same bat time, the same bat channel" and let's do some tastings of beer. Beer Advocate has given us a good template and method that allows us to start right now and to learn as we go. Cheers everyone!

Sours are popular and how they are made can be different. You can pitch the bacteria right into the beer with the yeast, you can use wood foeders or barrels that have wild bacteria present in them, you can use coolships which glean it from the air or you can sour the mash right in the kettle. I have Witterkeke Wild.

Pours a very light yellow and turbid like a wheat beer. That does not mean murky or muddy. A white head of thinner bubbles that fizz and pop slowly and last as long as they can. Beautiful chalky yellow appearance with a white cap . Nose is fruity and the wheat is crisp smelling. It has a firm hop herbal in the background and a small tart scent to the background as well. Perfumey with a little bubblegum. There's lots of earth in this beer and that's coriander. There is hardly any funk on the nose just that elusive sour scent.

Appearance is a big part of a beer and this one has a lovely appearance. 5% abv .

Drinks perfectly with a crisp and just sour finish. A tartness that accents the fruity banana and much lemon. The brett? does not give full out barnyard but becomes so gently full in this beer it is hard to describe. I think it even has a sweetness to it. it's soft, earthy and the hops are floral. The wheat is beautiful and bready. It's tall and has a soft golden flavor. Reminds me of sunshine. The finish is creamy and dry but not fizzy so that lets you see more malt flavor and dry. These are soft bubbles that let all that funky quality just loll around your mouth. And still it has structure. There is not too much bitterness to finish it and it does not need it . You don't even really notice any hops in the beer at all except when you think you miss them they taste like wet hay! That is very cheerful. And no bitterness in the finish, just the softness of the malt and the slightly complex and slightly acidic or sour flavor . Wonderful beer. Gentle, well defined and refreshing. More subtle than most but definitely pairs with lots of food because of it. First to mind this gorgeous Sunday is pastries. This beer would go well with pastries. It's very citrusy so Chinese food and barbecue. This beer would also go with salad and believe me that is difficult to do. It's a good choice if you had been looking for a saison and could not find one. It would go with greens too and all my crazy seafood and fruit dishes like crab with nectarine, shrimp with marjoram and lemon, or even pork chops with cranberries. =) Good morning everyone and

Happy New Not American Wild Beer Sunday!

Good Morning BA! Waiting for my brother to get here to head out and do some fall fishing. Need some morning coffee before we go though. Sixpoint 5Beans.

Pour is a deep dark brown, just barely some light passes around the edge of the glass, one finger head quickly reduces to a halo leaving some lacing.

Aroma is surprisingly light, mostly coffee and chocolate. If you really swirl it and give it a good smell, you can get some vanilla and cardamom.

Taste is a big punch of mocha upfront, similar to the nose. Then the lighter vanilla and cardamom come across midpallete with notes of cherry and almond. The beer finishes with a dark chocolate bitterness and dryness. Alcohol is hidden ok, but is noticeable.

The feel is spot on for a porter, if it had been called a stout it would be too thin. Carbonation is light and fizzy. Slightly drying.

Overall it's a good porter, falling short of great in lack of complexity or delivery of flavors. I think this one would be great oak aged. Those tannins could really mix in and bump up the flavors.

    Cheers!
    Marc

Morning NBSers, with special thanks to @utopiajane for starting us off with an interesting beer to look for on my next visit to the beer store.

Currently I'm just finishing my first bottle of a today's new beer, but I'm not planning on discussing it until later when I am having the second (?) bottle. (In case you hadn't guessed, I'm not a big fan of reviewing beers based on a taster size sample or even sometimes based on only a single bottle.)

Today's new beer that I will report on is the Asahai Super Dry which is categorized here on this site as being a Japanese Rice Lager. The flavors are not strong and are quite subtle so it's hard to pick up a lot to describe on just one bottle. So there will be two bottles (or more ) that will be "harmed" for the writing of my review (but I don't feel too guilty since that is really their intended fate ). This is also going to be interesting because the only other lager I'm aware of having that relied heavily on rice is that major American brand owned by a company that some love to hate.

    Until later, Cheers, all!

    How to speak Carton-ese

Carton labels their DIPA as 077XX after their zip code of 07716 but as you can read below in the BA description the folks in the know call this beer O’Dub.

“Like all things truly Jersey, 077XX makes the most in balancing through its accentuation of extremes. Inspired by the west coast IPAs we love, we added a thump of hops to a dynamic malt profile and chose a yeast to drive these two further than they wanted to go. Throw our water into this mix and you will find dank green resinous hops popping over orange, mango and papaya aromas, with just enough sweetness of body to make the long finish a pleasure to have around. Drink 0’Dub when your night matters.

Served in my Spiegelau IPA glass

    Appearance:

Pours a hazy light yellow with a fluffy white head.

    Aroma:

There is a complex hop aroma here. Some tropical fruit, some citrus, and even some resin.

    Taste:

The flavors follows the nose: a tasty combination of tropical fruit & citrus with a again some resin. There is a notable malt backbone which provides nice balance to this beer. I personally did not perceive any alcohol in this beer.

    Mouthfeel:

A medium body with moderate carbonation

    Overall:

This is a very good DIPA. I really enjoyed drinking this beer!!

If you ever find yourself in New Jersey and are fortunate to have Carton beer available to you then maybe you too can speak Carton-ese and order an O’Dub.

Cheers to Carton for crafting such a tasty DIPA!

I'm sitting on the balcony overlooking Disney World, can't ask for a better location of this beer. Vacation with my family, and the inlaws makes for a stressful, but fun week. And yes, I do know how lucky I am. We're hitting up Epcot later today. I intend to drink my way through the countries with a new beer at every stop!

Bright golden with orange highlights, short lasting white head with small amounts of lacing. Orange, banana and clove-typical for this style of beer on the nose. Citrus; lemon peel and manadarin orange, clove, faint bubblegum. Mouthfeel is a bit lacking, expecting that lighter, fluffiness feel.

    * yes, I brought my Lexan tulip for a somewhat proper glass.

    Hey what's going on?!

Happy to be joining you all once again but I thought I'd have a little fun before I start.

I have some new beers but deciding what to drink first is a bit tricky

    Help me out!

I am thinking one of two themes for beers to review for NBS for myself today. Keep it local (md dc) or do the world tour..

Which would you rather see me do?

Send me a beer mail to tell me which beers I should do under the theme. I will tally up the votes and start reviewing later probably sometime early afternoon.

That beer was recommended to me by one of the bottle shop guys I buy from, but I never bought it. After your review I'll have to grab some. Thanks, Maria!

And on @Wasatch 's note I'd like to add a note about the generosity of a few BA's:

I have been enjoying so much good beer recently. Way too much to save for just a Sunday. And, for the last week it's ALL been from the kindness, generosity of the fine folks from our NBS BIF#4...<drumroll>...MONKEYS WITH KNIVES.

And while I know these were not consumed today, I did want to share some of the highlights of my week up through Friday.

From the generous @jhavs I received this complex, subtle Vermont beauty:

Tipping Point IPA by Foley Brothers, Vermont
    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/30542/247518/?ba=2beerdogs#review

And from the omnipresent & evergenerous New Jersey Box Boss, Master ninja BIF'er, Ambassador of all things Fermented in New Jersey, and all around thoughtful BA @SammyJaxxxx I had the great pleasure of savoring the following NJ gems:

    Pumpkin Cream Ale by Carton
    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/26817/85518/?ba=2beerdogs#review

    Cosmonaut by Carton
    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/26817/156565/?ba=2beerdogs#review

    Verbal Agreement by Magnify Brewing
    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/40579/251684/?ba=2beerdogs#review

And I still haven't even put a respectable dent in the glorious Midwest Wonders boxes I received from our Lady near the Lake @Hopgoddess312 .

And I still haven't sent ALL of my ninjas...
So, in a nutshell, I wholeheartedly recommend that ALL of you consider participating in the next round.

Redd's Ginger Apple Ale has foam, which instantly fizzes away. The appearance is a pale, clear, bubbly gold, similar to ginger ale. The aroma is of ginger and sweet apple. Taste is of spicy ginger, sweet apple, and a blonde ale base. Mouthfeel is low medium, and Redd's Ginger Apple Ale finishes crisp.

Good morning, NBS dudes and dudettes - tried a great new beer this morning - but my post went to WBAYDN because I included a couple of tunes... So this is the same post as over there but with links to the music accompaniments instead of embedded videos...

The world spun in reverse for an hour last night but still the nights grow longer...
I was just getting started on this one here...

But I could tell ya, right off the bat...

    This is one helluva brew...

    Type O Negative - Black No. 1

Full of dense, roasty, bittersweet cocoa... I'm a fan of Old Rasputin, Yeti, Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout, Founders Imperial Stout, Narwhal, and the like, as far as Russian Imperials go, and this is easily on par, perhaps even superior to some in certain regards. Not too sweet, the alcohol hidden impeccably, smooth and rich, neither overdone nor cloying, with an almost wood-like dry edge. Full-bodied and so drinkable its scary...

She's just watching it fill me with darkness...

    Ah, sweet, Morticia...

That's my only new beer today - looking forward to some football - hey, where's the morning game? :stuck_out_tongue: Cheers, NBS... Here's to new beer in your glass... :grinning:

Posted over in the WBAYDN but thought they were worthy beers for New Beer Sunday.

Good Morning BAs and Happy Sunday

It is the last day of the bro in law being here and we have 8-10 beers to try today mixed in with a day of football and good food. Breakfast is done and we are on to our first pours and they are good ones! These beauties have been aging nicely and reached their enjoy after dates last week. Deshuetes Pinot Suave a Belgian Ale with Pinot Noir grapes aged in French Oak Barrels. Very good a bit of roasted malt, dark fruits, prunes and lots of Oak. Has that bourbon barrel taste and feel due to the prevelant Oak flavor. Next, Deshutes The Dissident 2015 Reserve. A Belgian brown ale fermented with wild yeast. Blended, 65% aged in French Oak Wine Barrels and 35% brewed with sour cherries. Very good and very tart. Huge sour cherry on the nose but subtle to taste. Tart with a sweet but yet dry finish. Two beautiful beers that will leave you feeling like a bit of a wine-o.

    Cheers BAs

Unexpected characteristics in a fairly standard beer are the somewhat delicate carbonation, a very full mouthfeel and that I am drinking it a long, long way from home.
