I've been experiencing a problem over the past couple months that I was hoping was just a fluke, but now I'm nervous that it is not.

The following scenario has happened, more or less exactly, three times in the past couple months:
    1. I'm receiving a beer shipment at my office where FedEx is the carrier

    2. As I follow tracking, everything seems normal, including getting a status update that the box has arrived at the local shipping hub and is ready for delivery

    3. Then, the day the shipment is slated to arrive, my tracking updates to show the dreaded DELIVERY EXCEPTION

    4. In all three cases, the details of the exception are as follows: Improper shipment - Unable to deliver shipment - Returning to shipper

    5. In the first two cases, the box got back to the shipper completely intact, with no breakage or damage of any kind

    6. In this third case--which happened this morning, so is still in progress--the box has yet to get back to the shipper, but I fully expect it to arrive back to the shipper intact. The driver told me that the box never even got on his truck and that it's likely that they opened the box at the shipping facility.
So.... has anyone else had this experience or anything similar? If so, what did you end up doing about it?

I'm afraid that something about my information--either address, name or the combination of the two--has been flagged somehow at that shipping hub and that any future order that comes to me through FedEx is going to risk the same problems, especially if you can hear liquid if you shake the box.

For the shipment that got flagged today, I gave the shipper a new address (my house instead of my work) and a different name, but moving forward, I'm not sure how to handle, because I don't want my house address to get flagged as well.

Any input/advice would be much appreciated.

Have you ever received that generic letter asking you to stop shipping alcohol without license, etc.?
I always wondered if this is possibly what happens after that letter.

Nope. Although I have had one shipment in my trading career get trashed due to breakage. That was almost a year ago though.

My buddy mentioned the same thing, but I wonder if there's no letter because I'm technically not the one breaking policy as the receiver.

Usually it's a driver that is the *hero* and sends the box back. Your case sounds like a person at the hub that's the *hero* which is a little different. I believe they can't flag an individual in their system, so this person would be sending back all suspicious boxes. And if there's a lot of them, then I can see that person learning your particular name/address and flagging it in their head. And if the same hub is being used to ship to both your work and home, then you may be SOL. Not sure how you would find that out, but that may be a piece of this puzzle. Methinks it is time to tell everyone to use UPS going forward...or at least until that *hero* leaves Fedex.

    @mikevanatta Any other insights?

Start shipping to your home address to another resident in the home. See if that fixes your problem.

Send a decoy box and see what happens. Have a friend ship you somethin similar in weight and size. Actually salsa or olive oil or Bbq or snowglobes... the crazy shit people lie about.

Ship it in a distinct way. Like get a roll of zebra duct tape or something. See if it comes to you with new tape or packaging.

It is not. Tons of people on the site have gotten the letter & many phone calls from the account manager (including me) & keep on shipping without issue.

To me it sounds like a hero employee at the hub & I suggest having people ship UPS. I know someone in NJ that has to have everything delivered UPS for the same reason

Sorry I am just getting to this now, I haven't been around here much lately. This sounds apt based on what the OP describes. Depending on the size of the hub, they may be using some kind of scanning equipment or something because, in those facilities, it is almost all (and please don't think of this as a pejorative term) grunt workers. Most of the package handlers are part time and their only goal is to get the hell done with the package sort. This means, unload, sort, stack, peace out. A small part of my job when I first started with the company was to assist with our local package sort, and no one is looking at addresses or names on packages.

I am now two full years removed from my position with FedEx, so that could factor in when we consider how accurate my info is these days. Do I think FedEx has implemented some sort of "flagging" system for addresses that people always seem to murmur about? No. But obviously we need to consider the reality and that is - your beer mail is not making it to you, OP. Might be time to advise your trade partners to use UPS.

Sorry this wasn't very helpful, but I hope you figure this out!

    Easy solution:
New job and file for a name change. Problem solved.

Call customer service and complain that your packaged are not being delivered. What is the worst they can do-stop delivering packages to you? They are already doing that.

Easy solution is a box or 2 of mac & cheese in the box with your beer so when FedEx receives the box and shakes the box they don't hear liquid sholshing around they here noodles shaking around in the box.

Have you called them and asked?

I didn't call to ask because I worry that such an inquiry only 1) brings more attention to the situation, and 2) results in unsatisfactory answers along the lines of 'don't ship beer'.

Since this happened, I haven't had anything shipped to my office and haven't had any problems. I'd really like to go back to receiving this at my office as the weather gets colder, but I'm afraid of wasting people's time.

Thanks for the input everyone--it's very useful.

Are these packages being shipped through/to California...and getting hung up in Fairfield, or Tracy CA? I've had multiple problems with packages to me in Northern CA with the delivery exception notification too in those locations.

Most recently, a guy's package to me apparently had a bottle leak then was sent back to him. 2 weeks later the replacement box he sent sat in one of those warehouses for 2-3 days with no trackable movement to the next fedex location. It then showed up at my place missing two bottles and apparently had been opened and the box resealed with a completely different kind of tape than what the original sender used. He's sending me the replacement bottles so I don't think he's lying to me.

This is the 4th or 5th damaged box or box missing bottles (only one was sent by me) that have been hung up/damaged in one of those two warehouses.

In the one box that I sent out, a parabola and sucaba were missing, the box had been repacked into a different box and still forwarded to the receiver. When he got the box it smelled of liquor and as I said was missing the sucaba and parabola. I guess they kinda hooked me up by repacking it and not sending it back to sender as damaged goods. I still wonder if both bottles actually broke or if one broke and they helped themselves to the other. Incidentally that BA's package to me was damaged in the Fairfield warehouse, he filed a damage claim & got reimbursed for it. Incidentally a young girl from FedEx called me 3 weeks later saying I could go pickup the damaged package at the warehouse otherwise they would confiscate it. She said she tried to kind of repack and forward it to me but her manager said because it's leaking alcohol he wouldn't let her ship it to me. I guess they could've easily "confiscated the box" and taken whatever's left and undamaged home. So I'm kinda contradicting myself a little here with different theories.

Phew, that's a long winded story, sorry, but I've had a lot of beer shipping drama with fedex. Point is, these mofos in this area BEAT THE SHIT out of a lot of beer packages, I've gotten a handful of "delivery exceptions" and some fedex warehouses may or may not have a few guys that prefer a nice, quality, free, craft beer over a bottle of bud light.

Have em sent to you double boxed with thick styro in-between, and not to your office even though it is more convenient, and have em sent UPS.

Though I believe almost all deliv. drivers are honest I have personal knowledge of one driver who managed to locate the weed packages in his truck and helped himself to some routinely. If I was a gambling man my bet would be on some fine beer loving FedEx driver found out you get fine beer..

Ship UPS then, changing carriers seems fairly simple.

Mark Gugs had a problem like this years ago, the box would get to the final point of delivery then the Box would stall. I believe that was Fed Ex as well, not sure how he got around that but he guessed someone knew what it was and was flagging his boxes.
So you can you use a friends/parents name and address, or you can use a different shipper. I would think in a very small town this might a bit easier, in a larger town or city there just pumping out boxes.
