So a new gastro pub just opened up in Iowa City and low and behold they have $25 bottles of Bourbon County Bramble and Bourbon County Coffee. I stopped in briefly today at lunch just to "see it to believe it" after received word of this. I plan on stopping in after work today and enjoying one of them with my better half at the bar. My question is, what would be the best way to go about inquiring as to if they would let me take a second bottle out the door to go? Call me crazy, but I would have no qualms about paying 25$ for a bottle of either of those beers as I have yet to try either and really want to, I just am not sure how frowned upon I will be for asking to take one home and save for later. Just curious if others have had similar situations!

You: "Excuse, Barkeep. This $25 okay for a to-go bottle"
    Him/Her: "No"
    You: "Okay Thanks"

    or
You: "Excuse, Barkeep. This $25 okay for a to-go bottle"
    Him/Her: "Yes"
You: "Okay Thanks, Ill take two"

    Cheers!

Just ask, don't know about laws there by they may have a license for offsite/take home sales.

Or are you saying you know it isn't legal but you want them to make an exception?

Here in VA they give you a 20-25% discount if you buy to go.

Explain to the bartender how much either of these bottles could land in a trade on BA...remember to set up a Power Point presentation including at least one slide with Venn diagrams and a link to seekabrew.com

I'd say the question is more about being perceived as piggish. Hey, if they want to keep them at the bar to draw people in, they'll tell you. Shouldn't be a reason for them to get pished at you or anything. If they decline to sell you a to-go bottle, ask if they know of anywhere in town that might have one.

Well I do not know if it is or is not legal per se in Iowa...I don't know why it would not be, but given this place opened up less than a week ago I could see why they would want their rarest items to be enjoyed in the establishment and not taken to go by some craft nerd (myself). Furthermore, if I were in the owners situation, I would be concerned that the dude I sold the bottle to go to would turn around and try to make a profit on the bottle. Guess I will just have to ask and hope for the best!

I've taken bottled beers to go from a bar before, I simply asked the bartender "before you close out my tab would you mind putting bottles X, Y, and Z on it and packing them up to go?". No biggie.

It's not like you need a secret handshake or something, either they do or they don't. And if they do I can't see why they would be upset about it. They want to sell the bottles.

So in my state of impatience I called the place to ask and got the owner....the owner laughed because he knew he would be getting that question soon enough with the supply he put together and he said he can sell them to go I just need to bring a bag to put them in as he does not have individual bags yet, still waiting for them to arrive. IDK why I thought this would be more of an issue, oh well. He also said he will give them to me at a discount from the menu price, so I am curious to see what I will actually end up paying to walk out of there with a bramble and coffee...will report later!

When are you going? I only ask because it's been two+ hours since you posted this and the Chicago people are probably going to get there soon to clean the place out.

Its not rocket science to ask a question, but seems to get lost in the world today.

Don't be so hard on them. OP is probably more timid than your average bar patron. I gather from the user name 'Mrs. and Man 35' that they are gender-confused and probably have a history of social difficulties.

Well what a nice bunch you guys are... Who am I to ask a question about buying beer in a forum on a message board about beer...I know someone who got a rather less than nice response when he asked to buy a couple bottles of bourbon county stout to go from a bar in Chicago around March, so if not for that experience I may not have initially been skeptical.

And as for my username, there is no gender identity crisis, I assure you. I needed to come up with a user name, wasn't feeling particularly creative, and that damn "mr. sandman" commercial came on for the 10232th time while I was signing up. Also, the number 35 happens to be my favorite number as a homage to Mr. Tony Esposito of Chicago Blackhawk fame.

    So shoot me.

Thank you to those of you who so obviously pointed out that I could ask. I was just looking to get a gauge as to a general responsiveness to this type of inquiry at a bar, I was not asking how I could go about getting one to bring home, I know what a mouth is as well as its intended function.

I would like to think I use sarcasm and shoot the shit with the best of them, but jesus this was simply an honest question, idk how you guys started taking digs at my username and what my personality must be like as a result.

I don't think anyone was giving you a hard time. From what you posted, it sounds like you should be able to enjoy a bottle with dinner, take the second one home, and make friends with the owner!

Hopefully you and Mr. Andman enjoy the beers!

Take a cork and leave with it, problem solved. I know we can do that in Texas... Just have it in the trunk.

Well $40 later the Andman family beer cellar has two much-anticipated new members and a new craft bar owning friend  Please excuse the "dumb-phone"-quality picture

    Good job!
Please take the responses with a grain of salt. I can assurre you that no one was personally attacking you. There have been a lot of crazy posts of late and some of us are not as gentle as we should be.
It looks like after all was said and done, you got the beer you wanted.
    Cheers to you, enjoy them!
