Good morning BA, taking a lunch break from working on the addition. It's been about a year I've been trying to get this beer and finally traded for one yesterday. Tree House Julius. I've had several Tree House beers and Bright with Nelson and Very Hazy were the only ones I thought were spectacular. So here goes.

Pour is a typical New England IPA, Hazy golden orange with a one finger head, slowly dissipates into halo, very nice lacing.

Aroma is intense but at the same time it's subtle. Orange, fresh nectarines, pineapple. It's more on the dank/mossy side than bright exuberant smells.

Taste is big on the orange and tangerines, a smidge of grapefruit, mango, peaches, and pineapple, slight lemon zest. Earthy and grapefruit bitterness, subdued. It's a little sweet and citric but not over the top. There's a little breadiness on the back end.

Carbonation is low and tingly. Very smooth and soft, everything is rounded, there's nothing sharp or harsh. Drying on the finish.

Overall it's damn good. I wouldn't say it's any better than my other top rated IPAs but it is definitely a good beer. I think I still prefer Bright and Very Hazy over it. I think you could very easily get this same experience from Trillium Citra Cutting Tiles and Bissel Brothers Swish, or Other Half All Citra Everything, at half the effort. If I can easily get some in the future I will, and I'll enjoy it, but I won't drive down there just for this.

    Cheers!

Greetings all! I'm enjoying a nice brunch beer and getting some chores done. In the background of the photo is my newly replaced dryer vent hose, If it ain't broke don't fix it, they say, but in this case I made an exception. I don't know who decided that a 20" long hose was the right size to install behind a dryer, but I've been living with it since 2000. Every time I needed to get behind there that hose seriously limited just how much the dryer could be pulled out, and made it extermely difficult to reattach when it came off. Well, things are done properly now with a much longer expandable metal tube and one little part of my life has become easier . This old tube will make a great playground for the guinea pigs as well, so there's that...

Coppertail Brewing's Wheat Stroke, again courtesy of @jhartley 's Monkeys With Knives package.

This is a very nice American Wheat Ale, clean, crisp and slightly tart. Just the slightest hint of lemon/orange peel brightens up a delicate bready base. Midway through the glass some herbal complexity comes into play as well. It's quenching and interesting, and made for long sunny afternoons. I could see drinking a lot of it- the main key is no off flavors at all, and impeccable balance. Well done, Coppertail B+ (3.85). Thanks again, Jeff!

    Enjoy your Sundays, NBS!

    New Scotch Ale Sunday

    Silver City Fat Scotch Ale

Happy Sunday, BAs. What a wild week it's been. Glad for the opportunity to share a beer with y'all.

This one comes courtesy of the Monkeys With Knives NBS BIF and the generosity of @kemoarps. Thanks, brother.

Fat pours a ruby-tinted cola color with a finger of airy tan head that leaves a decent crown but very little lacing.

It has a mild aroma made up of cherry, caramel and root-like Moxie notes.

I'll say here that there's also a tad more carbonation in this than I'd like, evident in how the head forms and slides away from the glass and a touch of carbon dioxide in the smell, taste and feel. It's probably not a flaw, just not in a balance I'd prefer, thus interfering a bit with my enjoyment in each area of the beer-drinking experience. What an effin prima donna I've become.

Anyhoo... The taste is made up of mildly peaty, meaty and stale hop flavors, with little to no caramel, molasses or malt sweetness up front.

My favorite part is the aftertaste with a great mix of alcohol, mild hop bitterness, raisin and root beer/Moxie characteristics.

It's medium bodied, with a bit of dry creaminess to the feel and enough carbonation that it isn't flat and actually leaves some prickliness in the throat after swallowing.

Very glad for the chance to try this one. May be back later today. If not, have a great week everybody.

Happy New Beer Sunday to All!

A few people have mentioned a concern about their weight and its relation to beer on this forum, and I have to say I am with you! I've found that since I've discovered a love for the craft, I've put on some pounds. So, my solution? Work out, then drink! From talking with some of my runner friends, I've found out you burn calories up to 30 minutes after you work out. So, I've worked out, now I will enjoy my new brew!

But I wonder this: Do some beers hold more calories than others? If anyone can answer this, let me know!

I am enjoying a beer that was rated a few times last week on NBS: Sixpoint 5 Beans. After reading the reviews, I really wanted to try it.

The first pour wasn't much of a success. As you can see, the head was pencil thin, but perfect around the rim of my snifter glass. It created some nice lacing on the glass.

Second pour presented a more impressive head, with the aroma of bread, beans and . . .bananas?

Some of you may be wondering . . . why did she pour it twice? Unfortunately, I had to split it with my husband. Another attempt at losing some weight is splitting a bottle or can.

The color reminds me of Coca Cola with a nice, dark, caramel appearance. Taste has a bitterness that hangs around the perimeter of the tongue until the aftertaste. Nice smokiness as it warms. The feel is smooth with little carbonation and a bit dry.

Overall, this beer will hold a favorite spot for me with other coffee brews, such as Founder's Sumatra Mountain Brown, Lagunitas's Cappuccino Stout, and Dragon's Milk brewed with coffee. Its smooth-bitterness has won me over. The next can will be all mine! Bwahaha!

As a wrap-up, here is the soundtrack I enjoyed while writing this post and sipping 5Beans. . .

    [IMG] [IMG]
    Bit of a variety, there!

I look forward to reading more posts!

    Cheers!

Good afternoon NBS-ers! It's new IPA Sunday for me! And this LONG TIME WANT comes courtesy of that super generous BA: @SammyJaxxxx ,Esq.

    Russian River: Pliny the Elder
    [IMG]

Poured from a 510ml bottle into a Teku glass. Bottled on 10/12/16, so roughly 5 weeks old.

Appearance: Light amber body, clear and filtered. About a 1/2 fingers worth of head, which dissipated over a couple of minutes and leaves plenty of islands of lacing in the glass.

Aroma: Pine, grapefruit, pineapple and spice.

Taste: Starts out with a tea like flavor, which slowly fades into spicy pine and grapefruit and a mild tropical fruitiness.

Mouthfeel: Full on hops right away and a nice lingering pine bitter-tang.

Overall: Oh yeah! Lives up to the hype! Curious to see any differences this might have if it was super fresh, because this one is tasty! The aroma seems a little muted to me, but the taste more than makes up for it!

    Cheers!

It took me to my third beer of this Sunday to reach my first IPA, and it's one that, after reading the bottle description, I approach with an equal amount of eagerness and trepidation. It is Stone's England-inspired (and sourced) Emperial IPA.

A quick perusal of the ratings shows the peanut gallery is similarly divided over this brew. We might have to leave this verdict to the electoral college.

I'm sure Corey will be excited when I say this beer reminds me of DFH's Burton Baton, which shouldn't be surprising, given the roots. It's a very pretty beer, very hazy initially, but settling into a bronze-tinged translucence.

The aroma hints strongly at what to expect: earthy, spicy, peppery, and floral bitterness; huge notes brown sugar and caramel malt; just enough citrus tones to keep it interesting (very few). Not exactly the flavor profile I look for in an IPA every day, but a really welcome change of pace.

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/147/253513/?ba=Roguer#review
    3.89 / +2.9%

By rating, this is the best beer I've had all day. I would argue it's not exactly my style, but then I think back on the other two beers and ... yup, this is probably the best of the three. (Southern Drawl might be just as well constructed overall, but for my palate, a pilsner doesn't quite scratch the itch.)

Stepping it up with something a touch heavier as the hours roll into the afternoon: DTP (linked over on WBAYDN?).

Ok, fantasy lineups set up, time to get ready for some football. And what better way than with a beer. This beer comes courtesy of a friend of the GF. We have seen this brewery when we visit family, but I am not sure we ever grabbed anything from them. So onto a porter from Kinkaider Brewing Company - Hiram's Bones:
The beer pours nicely, a very dark brown. Seemingly fairly clear, there is a little muddied look near the end. I didn't expect to need to decant, and the beer in the glass still seems pretty clean. A nice khaki head fizzles, but lasts longer than it sounds before ending in a medium thin ring.

Nose is a little burnt toast and fall woods (I am reviewing it in the house, so it's not the ambient notes that the pics may bring into question). There are also the unsurprising light notes of chocolate and weak coffee that often come with the dark malts.

Taste does seem to lean on the roasted malt, as I am not getting much counter to the opening notes that parallel the nose - burnt toast, lightly astringent coffee with a barely a splash of chocolate syrup. Bitterness is maybe a tad woody, but really seems to be more like charred grains in the end. Light feel, slightly less than medium body, and a lingering burnt toast/lightly charred wood bitterness.

A nice straightforward offering. If you look, this is 7 months old, but the age doesn't seem to have affected the beer with off tastes. However, it might be old enough that the beer isn't showing its best side.

Oh, most certainly. A pint of an Imperial Oatmeal Stout can have in the neighborhood of 400 calories, while a basic Pale Ale might be in the 175-200 range (I'm just using numbers off the top of my head, so I might be off a bit, the memory isn't what it used to be). ABV plays a big part, and beer is loaded with yummy, yummy carbs. I love carbs!

And to this part "From talking with some of my runner friends, I've found out you burn calories up to 30 minutes after you work out. So, I've worked out, now I will enjoy my new brew!" , your glycogen window can stay open for up to two hours after you finish a workout. If you go for say a two hour bike ride, your body uses stored energy (fat). If you eat within that window, your will just "top up the tank" so to speak, and not store more. For good fat burning, 2+ hours is the good range, you've burned off all the simple blood sugar, and are now burning fat stores.

I hear ya with the dryer vent hose issue! Our last house had the same damn issue! Ya move the dryer 2 inches and the damn thing comes!:angry:
Plus glad you enjoyed the beer! They brew quite a few different beers that are keg only and one of my faves was on tap at World of Beer: Weequasher Berliner Weissbier, wish they would bottle that one!

Oh, definitely. I've been logging my calories all month, and the app I'm using (My Fitness Pal) has quite a few beers in its database. There is definitely a big difference related to residual sugars, alcohol, etc.
