What's your first beer after a dry spell?

Because I recently had a minor bump in the road with my health, I have been on the wagon for a few weeks. I should be able to resume normal activities early in December.. so I started mulling over what I'll start with.

My 1st thought is my favorite beer, a stout. Too heavy? IPA's might be to bombastic! I've pretty much decided I'm going with a really easy going comfort brew for me.. a brown ale (The Brown Note). It's smooth, it's light, and it has some really good flavors that I enjoy.

Have you ever been in this situation, and if so.. what was your go to 1st brew back?

I can't recall ever going more than 2-3 days without drinking for whatever reason, but I am not picky so I probably just pulled the most attractive beer from the fridge (I usually have 6-8 different beers on hand). If I didn't have anything in the fridge I'd probably go get a 6-pack of Bell's Two Hearted to jump start my liver.

    Similar situation.

It was Prima Pils because I found a nice fresh case and wanted my unused tastebuds to experience that complex interplay of flavors uninfluenced by any carry over effects from other beers.

I like the idea of a brown ale. Maybe not Brown Note but...
something subtle like drtth suggests because you have a rare opportunity to taste a beer with a trained but temporally virgin palate. Avoid anything hoppy (those will be fine for later, or tomorrow).
But honestly, you answered your own question--if a stout is your favorite, get a fresh one and enjoy the hell out of it.

No major health issues, fortunately, but sometimes if I get really sick I'll skip drinking for a week or two. I forget what my comeback beer was. Something lower abv, but hoppy.

I would go with Modern Times Fortunate Islands, though it's getting harder to find it fresh. So crisp and a nice beer to ease back into.

I've got a somewhat, but not really, similar situation. My wife wants me to cut back on drinking (down to 3 beers a week) while we start trying to have a kid. Something she read somewhere, and considering all that she is doing without, I felt it would kinda be bad to not go along.

I find myself saving my beers for a coffee stout after dinner or a Fortunate Islands before dinner. It sucks though, so I can't imagine being in your position (though only 3 a week may be worse in some ways. Such a tease!). Here's to hoping you have a speedy recovery and I knock up my wife soon!

The pilsner! A classic German style pilsner. When I have not had a beer for along time this is what I want. and I want it all the time too .

Leffe most of the time. My longer dryspell these days last rarely more than a week.

Always a really fine pint of bitter at a reliable local pub. In fact that's what usually ruins my dry spell.

It has definitely been the ruin of one or two of my dry spells.

Indeed, for some years I didn't drink beer in the US at all, and on more than one visit to the UK, "the best local bitter" was the only beer I drank. (Also a great conversation starter when new in town to ask for a pint of "your best local bitter.")

Smuttynose Old Brown Dog is a very nice everyday beer and is perfect "medicine".

Just stick with your favorite beer no matter what it is. Often BAs overthink things.

If the Brown Note is what calls to you, then that's the one. No need to get recommendations when something inside you is already leaning towards a particular beer.

I think this is a perfect opportunity for a good stout/porter with a moderate ABV - something around 5% (and without any extra flavorings in it). You'll get a chance to really appreciate it for what it is.

Black Butte would be perfect. I am consistently impressed with that beer whenever I've not had one for a while

Ive been drinking far more liqour than beer in the past few months so technically this isn't a dry spell for me but my first beer in a while had been Sam Adams Rebel Raw. I was satisfied with it.

I am dry Monday thru Thursday and on Friday I find myself going for a big beer. Last week it was KBS. This week was a 2015 Bourbon County. Next week....maybe a Speedway. I am lucky to have a very large stash to draw from and I just added 4 more Bourbon Counties :-)

Nah, straight to a hoppy single IPA. I crave it during the dry spells.
