Happy Sunday NBS players. Another breezy and pretty cool day here on the island. We've been hitting the 30's at night out here in the pine barrens. Watching some football and waiting for the Jets game for some unknown reason. It's pretty much like waiting around for a car wreck.

My new beer today is Juicy Double Red, a strong red ale, from Rocky Point Artisan Brewers here on the island. The beer checks in at 8.2% and 31 IBU's. The brew features vienna munich crystal malt, with manderina huell melon and citra hops. Sounds pretty intersting.

A dirty orange pour with hazy clarity, and a fluffy white head. The nose is all fruits but I mostly get melon. A nice dry feel on the very first sip with a rush of fruity hops on the finish. It's really tangy and dry at the same time. Big time fruit notes with melon, orange, grape, lemon, and mango. It kind of reminds me of fruit punch. The malts really seem to counter nicely with some rich sweetness and smooth the brew out. The mouth feel is moderate, and of course dry. The abv is non-existent.

Overall, one of the more interesting/different beers I've had in a while. I'ts almost like a balance between an imperial red and a fruity ipa. It's decent drinking but I wouldn't say that I'm in love with it. Perhaps it's just trying to do to much? I'm in the 3.5/4 range,

Gosh dang. You all are making me feel like I need to get more BA Ten Fidy. I have two cans downstairs. I saw someone I trust on Untapped rate it a perfect 5 as well. I may spend tomorrow after work getting a few more cans. For now, I'm still on the Alpine IPA train. I hate to say the Beer Advocate ad banners influenced my purchase, but that's not the case. Let's see if it's worth the money.

    Alpine's Pure Hoppiness.

Pours a clear orange with two fingers of white head. Nice retention with tight lacing - at least at the start. Aroma is a blast of hops and notes. Citrus, orange, resin, and pine come through in a sticky, almost-juicy aroma. Very tasty and appetizing. Biscuit malts form a nice base, and help substantiate the aroma. Fruity, citrus, orange hops pop through the flavor profile first. After the peak of fruity, orange notes, resin and pine hop notes stick the beer to the palate for a hoppy, slightly-bitter decompression of flavor. Mouth feel is filling, slightly abrasive and grainy, with a medium-thick consistency and texture. It's more of an experience to drink, rather then something to pound by the pool side. Overall, a well rounded DIPA with lots and lots going on. It's really more of an experience to drink, rather then something to slam.

Good Afternoon NBSers, I am glad Thanksgiving is over after a three day trip to NC and a long day trip to Florida yesterday I am ready for some rest. Happy Birthday @larryi86 enjoy 30 while you can cause it is downhill on the body from 40 on!!

This afternoon I am getting started with a single I picked up in NC as part of a mixed six pack. It is from Bombshell Beer Company in Holly Springs NC. I have to say I love a beer with a back story and according to the can the brewery is NC's first 100% women-owned brewry, I checked the website and found the interesting but it of info listed below.

"History tells us that brewing beer was traditionally a woman's job. In fact, the creation of beer is credited to women! The goddess, Ninkasi is recognized for creating the oldest beer recipe in existence, dating back some 3900 years. Until Medieval times, it was the woman's job to brew beer for the household and laws of that time stated that the tools of brewing were solely the woman's property. The role of men in brewing began to grow with the rise of monasteries during the Middle Ages. Until the age of "Enlightenment" and "Industrialization," women represented seventy-eight percent of licensed brewers. From that period on the role of women in brewing declined rapidly, which the founders of Bombshell say in jest, was the downfall of the art of brewing."

With all of that being said the beer I tried Dirty Secret Coconut Stout was pretty darn good, it reminded me of a less sweet Death by Coconut it clocked in at 4.5% ABV and 25 IBU's. I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving and enjoy your Sunday!!

Appearance 4 - Pours slick black color with decent tan head that quickly dissipates to just a thin ring around the glass with decent lacing.

Aroma 3.75 - Roasted malts and dark chocolate stand out, there is a hint of toasted coconut as well but not much else.

Taste 4 - Dark bitter chocolate, roasted malts, the coconut stands out more in the flavor than the aroma which was nice. It reminds me of a slightly less sweet Death by Coconut.

Feel 3.75- Medium body, good carbonation, slightly dry.

Overall 3.92 - I picked this up as a single in a mixed six pack and was very surprised, it is a very solid beer. Good flavor would liked to have seen a little more coconut in the aroma.

Good afternoon NBS, thanks Dave for the start off today. We have #1 son home for a few more days. A full schedule last week for sure. Both sons home tomorrow and Tuesday is French Meat Pie production day. A day long affair with the grandparents. This will be the first time in 4 years both sons have been able to participate.
Today's offering is from the basement. A long rest has moved this Saison from sharp and vibrant to Mellow and mature with wonderful characteristics. I am struck at how much the notes of tea and honey come through.

    Cheers all

Poured from the last bottle of the original release into a trusty goblet.
A - Color of honey, sunflower, golden yellow. Pillowing cumulus cap supported by kinetic even nervous carbonation.
S - Dusty, apricot, that Brett funk is deftly applied, rising off the glass hints of chalk, white peach skin, and a touch of lemon grass, warm honey and green tea.
T - The honey element is dominant, tea leaves, and ripe peach. The funk transfers to the palate in the form of sourdough toast, quite lovely
M - Medium in body, the surfaces are all coated with a touch of oiliness. Carbonation is strong but gentle, nudging the offering off the tongue. A long sweet linger is delightful.
O - I picked this up 2 years ago, had one fresh, so glad to have kept this, the impact was positive. A fine saison in the fall flavor category. Lots of ripe fruit character, and so delicately applied Brett..
    Well crafted.

Great start Dave. That pic reminds me about how many times I've thought, "Wouldn't it be great to get this group together, just once." I have met a few fine folks from NBS in person, @ONovoMexicano and @Prager62 . And I've read about a few others putting faces and beers together. Maybe we can send pics in and somebody could do an old school "cut and paste." Sorry, I'm just an idea guy with very little tech skills.:slight_frown:

Hello to another New Beer Sunday.
I am so sorry for your loss. My cousin killed himself back in August, and it was a horrible blow to me and my family. I feel what you're going through.

Now to try to lighten the mood.

I was hoping to go to Spilled Grain for their Cousin Eddie today, but, again foggy as hell, so I decided to stay home, and enjoy a new Spilled Grain beer I got last week there.

This is their Dark House Imperial Stout. It is fairly rich flavored, and at 9.5, it gives a nice buzz. I'm sure they sold out of the bottles - they only made 75, and I bought 4 of them, but they might still have it in taproom on tap.

This is a fairly thick pouring beer. The head was a 1 finger head, and frothy, but did dissipate quickly. The nose is rich. It's got some barrel feel to the nose. The taste is interesting. It has a boozy feeling to it. Maybe a bit wattery feeling. It also has a warm feeling going down. Not bad.

I think we should rate ratings!!! Then we could buy votes with offers of whalez, and then we could have a recount - and then we could have congressional hearings!!! Then we could televise the hearings and find out that secret recordings of clandestine meetings held to determine how the rating of ratings could be secretly manipulated were in fact made and in the possession of @cavedave since 1965 ..... the year Fritz Maytag acquired Anchor Brewing Company!!!

The hops are not as prominent as I hoped for. Probably some of my fault- this has been in my fridge for about 4-weeks. When I tried to read the bottle date without my glasses, I stupidly rubbed it with my hand greasy from the salami you see. The date disappeared! BA database on this beer says its only available through August, so it is likely past its prime right now.
Pours to a slightly opaque gold, not cloudy though. Tremendous head, fades to medium lacing and surface-only layer.
Aroma is prominent alcohol as is the taste. The hops are there but not as I was expecting.
Not horrible, but don't know if I would buy it again, given other options. To be fair, I hope if I ever encounter a fresh sample I will remember to give it a second chance.

From the Evil Empire an excellent IPA. Brewed in Bend Oregon by 10 Barrel Brewing Joe IPA. The first thing I noticed about this beer is the aroma. It's very strong of pine and citrus. The taste is balanced however with a nice bready malt flavor. Still this is an IPA and it's about the hops. Simcoe, Amaarillo and Mosaic are used and they work well together. The mouth feel is light for an IPA and there is a nice dry finish. Simply put this brew tastes great. Joe IPA is better than the IPAs brewed by Blue Point or Goose Island. It will be a nice choice to have in a non craft bar.

Good afternoon to all the NBS regulars and welcome to all the new comers. Thanks to Dave for getting us started today.
It's been a pretty busy week for us here as we visited my daughter and here family for Thanksgiving. They are just outside of Pittsburgh, PA. so about a 12 hour drive for us here in NH. It was a great Thanksgiving with getting to spend time with the grandkids and being able to find a little time on Friday to collect a few beers from the Pittsburg area.
My new beer for today was actually sitting in my garage when I got home yesterday, thanks to the great service I receive from my FedEx driver. I supplied him with the pass code to my door opener and when I'm not home he sets them inside for me. One of the great things still left here in small town NH.
This beer was sent to me by a trio of fellow BA's that thought it was truly fitting for me. So with no further ado my beer for today is Get Off My Lawn from Cellarmaker Brewing.
Received this beer from a consortium of fellow BA's because that thought that I fit the bill for this beer.
This beer pours a hazy orangey yellow color into my tulip glass. Not a huge head but enough to cover the top of the pour.
The nose has lots of tropical fruits with grapefruit, pineapple and other citrus fruits. There is a background hint of breadiness from the yeast I assume.
The taste is all fruits and great bitterness with no breadiness from the yeast coming through. This is probably the closest to an east coast IPA that I have seen from the west coast.
This is a better than average DIPA and well if I lived on the west coast I'd be drinking a lot more of this beer.

Hello gang. It's Quad time of the year! My NBS review today is North Coast Brewing's Brother Thelonious, a Belgian-style Abbey Ale with a 9.4% ABV. It's a lovely pour with a nice smell but the taste is disappointing. I can't tell the age of this bottle and it very well may be better fresh. Here's my review:

    3.83/5 rDev +1.1%
    look: 4 | smell: 4 | taste: 3.75 | feel: 3.75 | overall: 3.75

Bottle not dated. Poured into tulip glass. It pours a deep ruby-cola color with one finger of foamy, beige head and lacing with excellent retention. It smells strongly of fig with sweet malt, brown sugar, and a whiff of clove. The taste follows the nose but everything is rather subdued and there is a decidedly sour finish. I also don't taste the caramel that other reviewers mention. This Quad is medium-bodied, pleasantly carbonated and it packs a punch with its 9.4% ABV. Overall, found that the taste didn't measure up to the promise of the nose. There is no date on the bottle and the taste profile may have deteriorated. I'd like to try a bottle that I know to be fresh.

Enjoy your new beers, everyone. I'm enjoying reading your reviews.

Good Sunday to all with all the proper warm tidings that the official Christmas season and leftover doldrums can impart.

Today I am posting two NB's on the same post because I'm not sure what the protocol is for reviewing home brew. For that reason, my first beer will be a bona fide retail offered beer, while the second will be a critical examination of the crafting of one of our own BA's.

First up, Cigar City Jai Alai on White Oak.

Looks fine. Little hazy but a thick orange color is an obscuring factor in and of itself. Head wasn't massive, maybe about a finger of white foam.

Nose is pretty much like regular Jai Alai with all the grassy. Maybe there's a little more dandelion in there. Possibly something reminiscent of heat but I'm not certain.

Taste began in normal grassy fashion but took a momentary diversion down a slightly sour path but not so far that I was turned away. The bitter sticks around pretty well and serves as an accompanying layer to some back throat heat. Otherwise, this medium to light syrupy bodied beer isn't to different than the original but the heavier duty body and such reminds me of Pseudo Sue also.

Next up is the previously mentioned home brew.

This spiced stout comes courtesy of @Hookstrat along with plenty other terrific beers thanks to his LIF generosity in our fantasy football league.

Looks very nice with a coppery brown head that took only a bit of forcing. Nose carries a lot of what the description promised, as a light oakey background cradles hints of vanilla, cinnamon, pepper and something dark enough as to swing between coffee and chocolate. After another deep inhale, a little smoke peeks through.

Taste immediately takes a chocolate dominant direction while the spice makes itself a cozy little seat on the throat. It's making a very deep, smoldering burn that somehow isn't shocking the tongue too much because on the next few swigs I start to get that vanilla and a steady buildup of heat that now travels up my throat a bit. I really dig that sensation in beer, and this one is delivering in a champion's fashion. Medium body overall with a velvety presence on the tongue. For weighing in at 12%, you could have fooled me, as there's only spice heat - not alcohol driven heat.

Very impressive beer. I consider myself very lucky to have been given the chance to try this one!

Hopefully I didn't break some NBS protocol by reviewing a homebrew, but this beer is worthy of broadcast praise!
