Greetings NBS friends! I'm slowly getting my beer mojo back after battling a case of the flu last weekend. A hard lesson learned with getting my vaccination so late in the season and a mistake I won't make again. It's a snowy day along the southern shore today and a great opportunity to dig in to one of the remaining stouts from @Dragginballs76 from the armed monkeys BIF!

I'm going with Burnt Hickory Brewery Big Shanty Graham Cracker Stout. There is a handwritten 5-12 on the side which I'm certain is the bottle date and an abv. of 9%. I'm pouring it in one of the snifter glasses that came with the haul. Let's go!

Pours a medium thick dark brown with a finger of tan foam. It slowly settles leaving behind thick lacing. Smell is oatmeal raisin cookie dough, cinnamon and bakers chocolate. The taste is like eating a cinnamon graham cracker sprinkled with raisins and chocolate chips. Feel is slick and oily but rather thin like a porter.

A solid liquid dessert beer that is quite easy drinking for 9%. It tastes like a cinnamon graham/oatmeal cookie sandwich dipped in chocolate. Not a bad thing at all! My only minor issue was the thin body for an oatmeal stout and certainly nothing that would keep me from drinking this again. My score is 4.16 / rDev -1.9%.

Off for a walk in the fresh snow to visit my brother that I haven't seen in awhile to share a few beers. Enjoy your Sunday and new beer adventures! I'm hoping to be back later with another. Here's the official scorecard on this fine beer......

Okay guys, back with another hot-topic beer of the week. Never had previous versions, so this is a first.
Pours black black black, no light coming through . Head was better before the pic.
Aroma has oak, coffee, chocolate and bourbon.
Mouthfeel is smooth in front but aggressive at the finish.
Taste is also a progression, bourbon in the front, sugary malt in the middle, coffee finish. Complex beer. I would love to try this on tap on nitro.
I don't normally go for barrel aged beers, but this is hittn' the spot right now.

Thanks to you and @Greywulfken for your reviews of Lizard of Koz. I'm generally a huge fan of Founders but sometimes they misfire. When they go sweet it's often way too sweet. Big Luscious is a good example. So is Rubeous. I'm curious about Lizard of Koz. I'd like to try it but I'm not sure I want to spend $17. We'll see.

Happy Sunday NBS players. A sunny but pretty cold day, here on the island, that only seems to be getting colder as the night falls. Spent the day relaxing, watching football, and that's pretty much it.

My new beer today seems to be a popular choice today with two other reviews. The beer is Lizard of Koz, a ba imperial stout w/ blueberries, chocolate, and vanilla, from Founders. The beer checks in at 10.5% and I have no idea why they don't date the bombers.

A pitch black pour with a frothy tan head. The nose is big with bourbon, sugar, and fruit. A big time sweet and sugary rush hits my palate on the very first sip with a mix of the blueberry, vanilla, and chocolate. A syrupy and sticky flow that leads to a bourbon glazed finish. I find the blueberry really hits after each sip too. Additional flavor notes of wood/oak, and almost a feeling of jam/jelly. The mouth feel is full bodied and sticky. The flavors really coat and linger nicely.

Overall, this beer is out there. It's big, different, and it has a lot going on. I can see how the sugary feel will really turn some beer drinkers off. I am finding it rather interesting and I might grab another to see how it does with some age on it. I'm right around a 4 on it,

Folks seemed to like it in this thread. I thought it tasted like a cavity in a glass. A nice, chocolatey stout with some blended up blueberry pie filling and half box of saccharin thrown in. To each their own.

After sharing a few on WBAYDN, I realized that I do have NB to share this week, and I feel like it's a doozy.

Courtesy of @Hookstrat and his fantasy football LIF, is this 2011 Behemoth from Three Floyd's.

Thick beige head taunts as the beefy, opaque, angry plum colored body seeks to intimidate. Nose is a party that acts like it hasn't invited me to. The fragrance is not happy that I've arrived. Reluctantly, it imparts plum, dates, a hint of either coriander or celery and maybe a smidgen of vinous heat. Immediately upon taking a swig, the tart reactions take place on my tongue but quickly dissipates as raisin overwhelms for the time being. Let it linger for a moment and a mildly harsh tobacco makes its presence known. This is indeed a complex and angry beer, for real. The finish has a bit of heat and bitter fig on the way out with this medium bodied, and solidly carbonated beer. Whew, this is a great contemplative beer for certain. I'm probably not going to drink after this one!

Well conditioned, amber beer generating a massive head that allowed only the slightest meadow grassiness aroma to escape and receded slowly to an angry thunderhead of foam with parts flung against the side of the glass.
Surprised that the malt did not put up much of a fight based on the color but this beer went straight to its bitter finish. Definitely stands out in a country awash in lagers.

It seems I'm always working on a project on Sundays. Today, after an exhausting ride, and a week of bumping up my mileage in the pool and with my runs, I went downtown with my dad to do a bit of antiquing. I finally found a single mantel Coleman lantern for a good price. While it needs a bit of love, the glass is fully in tact, and the wasp nest inside is empty, at least, as far as I can tell. So I'm spending one of the last New Beer Sunday's of the year sitting out in the screened in porch scrubbing decades old dirt away. For the occasion, I decided it was time to open the first of my Chimay pack - the kind that comes with the white, red, and blue bottle and a chalice - after all, I don't own a chalice and I've never had any Chimay. What better way to try it? First up:

    Chimay's Cinq Cents.

Cinq Cents made a statement from the moment I took the cap off. That surprise came in the form of a seemingly endless supply of bubbles surging out of the freshly opened bottle. Fortunately, I was able to clean it up and poor it into a Chimay chalice which was at the ready. Upon pouring, it formed two fingers of hearty, foamy, white head in the wide mouth Belgian beer chalice. Head retention is incredible, with 1/2 a finger of white head sticking around throughout sips and the glass warming up. Lacing is foamy, encompassing the glass everywhere the beer used to be. The liquid is a bronzed-copper, with light barely filtering through the murky liquid. A sniff provides notes of Belgian spice, yeast, clove, with slight banana, and fruity easters. Very quintessential Belgian. No wonder it's a classic. Sipping Cinq Cents offers notes of clove, yeast spice, and rolled malts. The flavor profile is much more simplistic compared with the aroma. Mouth feel is smooth, and easy drinking. It is almost a bit watery. Overall, Cinq Cents is a great Belgian beer that remains much more on the thin, easy to drink side of the spectrum.

    New False Advertising Sunday

Busy weekend here. Squeezing a beer in real quick before going out to eat. My daughter turned 10 today, so we had a shin dig for her last night after getting back from a swimming invite that took up the rest of the day. Our boys finished 3rd of 11 teams, and my son had 2 third place finishes individually and 2 second place finishes in relays, so we did pretty well.
Today's beer is courtesy of @Roguer It is described as unfiltered and unpasteurized, and brewed with no kiwi fruit

This beer reminds me of a Samuel Adams Double Agent IPL on steroids, and is highly recommended

Poured from a 16oz can with an illegible date stamped on the bottom because it runs off the side.

It pours a predominately clear, copper gold with a 2-3 finger width, thick, egg shell white foamy head.

It smells very flowery with some citrus. Fairly dank/pungent fruit too. The leafy green and flower petals aroma dominates with some sharp grapefruit and a subtle background of toasted white bread grains.

I like the flavors immensely. It is a complex mix. It opens up very grainy, and then hits you with some spicy, biting dankness of hops and fruit. Very ripe grapefruit, mango, and some peach. Then there is a lot of grass, bitter pine, and what I would describe as flower petals (though I have yet to eat any). Then it comes back around to the malt grains again. Not exactly crisp, but pilsner like with cracker to light bread. There is also a lot of sugar on the back end. A candied orange flavor with a hint of bubble gum even. Solid lingering bitterness.

A solid medium body. More of a soft, creamy feel than crisp or dry.

An outstanding beer, which is no surprise from these folks. I would actually score the taste and overall higher if the sugar and bitterness were dialed back a hair at the end.

Greetings BA's! It has been a cold and damp weekend in TN but also a great couple of days. I'm thinking of @rgordon and his heartfelt post this morning. I'll continue to try to enjoy all of life's moments!
Yesterday brought the best annual beer festival in these parts, the Winter Warmer. My wife and I tasted too many world-class beers and some kick-ass local offerings. Some hard-to-find highlights included: Hunaphu, Abraxas, Prairie Pirate Paradise, Pirate Bomb, BA Ten Fidy, fresh unfiltered Pilsner Urquell...you get the idea. Most of all, it was a great time with great people.

Needless to say, I'm easing into Sunday. In order to remind me that 6% is a normal ABV for a beer, I'm reviewing this great beer from Ballast Point:

This poured a beautiful dark brown color out of the bottle and produced a large and rocky light tan head. Great lacing in the glass. Bright roasted coffee on the nose, with a bit of dark chocolate and vanilla. No surprises on the first sip: the fresh coffee showed up immediately and lingered clear to the finish. Great notes of vanilla and chocolate malt throughout. A bit of char and toast as well. Medium-bodied. The flavor-to-ABV ratio is huge here. Well done. Cheers!

Good evening NBS, hope everyone is enjoying the end of the weekend once again. Thanks to @utopiajane for getting us started off this morning. Got my laundry done today and did some cleaning around the apartment. The last week was nothing but endless new beer finds. I am a bit overloaded now, but I should be good for a few more weeks on reviewing. 4900th review is going to be in less than 2 weeks time.

    New beers:

This was a really nice pale ale! Fantastic head retention and dense lacing on the glass. Aromas and flavors of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, peach, passion fruit, mango, melon, lemon zest, orange peel, pepper, and pine hops; with some rye, light honey, and lightly toasted bread malt balance; and herbal, floral, grassy hop earthiness. Moderate pine/citrus peel bitterness and peppery rye spice on the finish. Medium bodied; balanced grainy/bready malt and hop stickiness in the mouthfeel. Lightly resinous, and increasingly drying finish. Zero astringency. This was really delicious! Very bright and tropical/citrusy on hops, with a nice solid malt backbone. Very drinkable, great hop complexity. For being bottled on July 28th this is holding up amazing. 3.93
    [IMG]

Excellent IPA! Aromas and flavors of big grapefruit, tangerine, passion fruit, papaya, mango, melon, peach, pineapple, apricot, lemon zest, orange peel, citrus rind, pepper, and piney hops; with moderate honey/bready malt; and herbal, floral, grassy hop earthiness. Moderate pine/rind bitterness on the finish. Medium bodied; moderate sticky/resins in the mouthfeel, with a solid amount of grainy malt creaminess. Light-moderate increasing resin dryness, zero hop astringency. Wow! Verrry bright and dank across the board on the hops. Nice malt backing for bitter balance, but the flavor is definitely 99% hops! Would definitely grab again, love the Galaxy/El Dorado combo! 4.1

Well, if you check out my post over on WBAYDN?, you'll see that I surprised myself out of a new beer this evening. However, I did have something new over lunch: Hitachino Nest espresso stout aged in bourbon and sherry barrels.

I've had the regular Hitachino Nest espresso stout, and I thought it was very good. This was quite different. That pic was taken right after it was served; no head whatsoever. It was tart and wine-like on the nose and palate. At only 7% it was thin, but the pleasant tartness (and oak finish) made it a slow sipper, nonetheless.

A good beer, but really much more like a low ABV wine than a stout.

    Hey what's going on everyone!?

Doing well, but these early sundowns are making me want to go to bed early.

Pretty low key weekend, hung out with friends, and did a drive in the country. Did manage one new beer from Pen Druid who make great stuff, but can't give it justice here under the conditions.

Therefore, our hero has to go to his beer fridge to get a score.

What's new for our hero today?!?

    -----------------------------

Poured from the bottle into a wheat ale glass. Bottled Sept 15th 2016.

Good opaque with some clarity in the body, but lots of fine carbonation with little streams all over. Dark lemon to light peach yellow color, and a real bright white frothing topped head. Soft topped at three fingers and big retention settling in at just under two tall height. Looks like a nice dollop of lemon ice cream, but a bit cloudy as expected.

Very nice nose. Aroma goes for excellent salinity and lacto tartness. Acididty is very moderate and not overly bright smelling, with some faint tropical notes that definitely tone it down with some more balance and play.

Great chewy and tart palate. Chewy sensing malt bill with light tartness and an almost crackling sense of grain. Real excellent tangy flavors of tropical mango and guava, wonderful tasting fruit addition that is nicely capped with a faint bit of salinity. Good chewy depth and fruity and full finish.

    Excellent fruited gose.
