This is a brewery in Valparasio IN that I'm VERY fond of called Four Fathers. Excellent little place. The regular version of this is wonderful, and the barrel aged is just better.

 

Knew that shit in the military and federal government.

Now this is a great fucking stout!

Maybe I'm not as partial to that tang of berry in my stouts as I thought I was (*BCB Regal Rye wasn't an immediate fave as I'd expected (based on my love of Bramble and Backyard Rye), and I just flat-out didn't like Lizard of Koz*), but this is the stuff is the real deal...

Molasses and dark chocolate syrup, hint of sweet black licorice, sinews of vanilla and an earthy edge of chewy hazelnut. Dense body, feels as viscous as it looks, smooth as silk, hitting that sweet spot between the rich smoky malt roast and sweet treacle. Just delicious - decadent and big, 11.2% abv, black as a starless night with a dark brown ring of foam that leaves an oily sheen down the glass...

Not your first pick for an aperitif but this more than qualifies tonight:

It has not been until this batch (labeled #004) that has dialed down the vanilla and almond extracts in favor of the coffee playing a more significant role. A really, REALLY great balance makes for this to be one of the best Non-Barrel Aged Imperial Stouts on the market...and in cans...more, Yes please!
