My kingdom for a release where the line doesn't wind through the Cricket lot. We are due for a chill queue.

Sorry to distract from the perpetual "Tired Hands quality control" and "My IPA went bad!!" topics, but: has anyone cracked open a Roomarak recently? I remember around its release drinkers were saying that it needed at least a few more months in the bottle and I was wondering how it was lately.

drank one about a week ago but it was the first bottle of mine i opened so can't say how it was to when it came out. it was tasty, carb was light.. lil higher carb would be nice but didn't detract a ton from the flavor... lots of grape

Been drinking one a month or so, last one is in the fridge. Hasn't really changed that much that I could tell.

would love anyone's opinion on a "muling" debate

my friends and i are all in agreement that buying extra beer to trade, or sell to friends/trading partners at cost, is ok.

where we are split is on the topic of:

***charging a fee to sell extra beer you otherwise would not have purchased to a previously unknown buyer ****

ie: bringing ur gf and selling her allotment thru a FS post for an extra $50

    A) fair game in a free market
    B) wrong on multiple levels
    C) indifferent

    common arguments:

-some people are unable to make releases and would rather pay extra $ to get the beer

-this practice hurts the customers who cant come early and may have otherwise been able to get beer if less people
    weren't buying just to re-sell

im in the camp that says, anything is fair
game as long as you arent cutting or double dipping in line. at the moment the issue is too small to make a real difference but at the rate ifs going the easiest fix would be keeping allotments low

    thanks! appreciate your input

some food for thought. Fact, not rumor.

Jean had 3, prob now 4, of his brewers poached by other breweries recently.

I know he's been brewing more now (at the cafe) than in quite some time (from his lips)

This is interesting news, did the brewers stay local? I am all for people spreading their wings and all that just sucks that it influences the end consumer? I am speculating that since you wrote that post in response to quality issues you think this has something to do with it?

bringing a mule to get you extra beer that you then turn around and sell that beer for profit is just bad juju.

Ben Potts who was Brewing at the Café up until recently is going to be the brewer at the new brewpub started by the owners of SPTR.

    Second District

This one’s completely under the radar: A brewpub startup from the folks who brought you South Philly Tap Room (509 Mifflin Street). Located nearby on Bancroft Street, the pub will seat about 100 and serve a limited menu from behind the bar.

I’ve seen interior shots of the place, and it looks casual, comfortable and tavern-like. The brewer is Ben Potts, formerly of Dock Street and Dogfish Head. Second District is slated to open mid-November.

The fact that you're even having that debate is everything wrong with the craft beer scene. People have turned beer into a collecting and trading game - that you need to somehow "win".

Beer is for drinking, and the social aspect of some friends gathered around pints.

So much this! It makes me sick to look at the replies in the TH Instagram posts each week......just disgusting. I'm one of the few that actually want do DRINK their beer and for that I get to stand in line behind a bunch of mules....mules that put chairs out no less to save their spots. Horrible.

I was just about to post the same sentiment.

Tired Hands and many other breweries have limits imposed on their releases for a reason. If you can justify skirting around those limits by bringing a mule along with you, then you're part of the problem. And that problem is creating unnecessary hype for every can release where it's a beer that most people haven't even tried yet.

Selling the beer is also illegal.

As much as I decry this as well it's the natural progression of craft beer at the moment. When everyone hears about everyone else's super hyped hyper local beers then trading just gets ramped up.

And I mean some breweries I don't blame for hopping on the hype train. They know where they stand in a sea of 5000 US breweries trying to stay in business or grow and thrive. They are fully aware that people in Cali are drinking Tired Hands and people over here are drinking Monkish and midsize to larger breweries are either laying people off or being bought out.

To expand a bit on the point mentioned by @SovietBillCosby, the biggest argument against doing it and charging anything for that beer is that it puts you in violation of the law in PA and most other most states and, IIRC, at the Federal level as well. It is, quite simply, illegal to sell any alcoholic beverage without a license to do so. Whether you make money or not is irrelevant. You buy the beer and pass it on to someone in exchange for cash, whether at cost or not, you have resold that beer and broken the law.

I know of at least one person who got busted and lost his steady good paying job for buying beer, and then collecting money for it from "case club" members who had requested some of one or more cases. The operation simply got too big for the law enforcement folks to ignore the complaints, etc. they were getting.

Whether you want to try and fly under the radar and get away with it and not be busted is something only you can decide. But if you do decide to do it, then at a miniumum you should be very careful who you get pissed off at you, e.g., someone in the line who knows your gf was a mule and you are re-selling the beer that they didn't get, or a disgruntled trading partner, etc. (BTW, if you don't pay cash out of pocket you create a paper/electronic trail that can be used as evidence against any claim of innocence if you do get busted.)

Disclaimer: I am not a lawyer but did look at some of this very carefully a while back after hearing about cases where PA residents got busted and had their vehicles confiscated while bringing alcohol in to PA that had been purchased out of state.

Does that mean you blame some breweries for jumping on the hype train?

    Cheers!
