But then JK would have missed out on their precious hype.

I just assumed the bolded was the case since the post seemed to have the specifics of the release at de Garde, but it is strange either way. I'm actually OK with how this has been handled. This isn't one of their 'typical' releases. It sounds like it will be more of a release 'party' (food, JK beers being poured, etc.). While this beer is priced over my self-imposed limit (my logic can only justify spending so much money on a single bottle of beer), I'm not at all upset about skipping it. I don't enjoy the type of crowd this will inevitably draw (lots of mules and the type of folks that I really really don't enjoy being around). I've seen so much talk already of people losing their fucking minds over this and planning trips from all over just to come for their one bottle.

I'll probably just go out there the day before and enjoy the typical de Garde environment. I don't mind them partaking in this sort of hyped-up shitshow occasionally, so long as it is not the norm.

DeGarde just posted this weeks list on FB, and, well, if anyone is heading out there this weekend, I am interested in a bottle of The Lily.

I haven't spent many winters up here in the NW yet ... can anyone give me an idea of how bad the roads can get on the way out to Tillamook (either from Portland or Salem)? Is it just that you have to be careful (a little slick) or is it in the 'you absolutely must have chains' category?

they could have easily announced the beer and left off dG's announce details and still built the same amount of hype.

im going out thursday as well. stoked to get a bit of normality and peace before the craziness of friday hits.

Jeffrey at Jester King offered to write the announcement. We happily accepted, as he and his team do a very good job with both verbiage and visuals.

There are several things of note that are different about this release versus some of our others:

Announcement; As you correctly noticed, this is being released with more 'fanfare' than typical for us. In this unique situation, we did want to have a more celebratory release. We're beyond excited to both work with and host some of our favorite breweries and people. We plan on offering bottles of the collaboration for consumption on premises during the release, as well as occasionally after. Our hope is that this helps alleviate some of any potential assumed need to rush out or wait in line for bottles to try the beer. It's a balancing act, for sure!

Pricing; This is by far our most expensive bottle as others have noted. There are numerous reasons for that:
We were required to pay the normal excise tax rate multiple times to do this blend because of the how it was constructed. We are having to ship the same beer/components for the majority of the beer multiple times. The blending and such necessitated much expensive travel for each of us. And perhaps most importantly, since we need to ensure that each brewery is making some money off of the blend, and as each of us have different associated costs and needs, it requires some give as well as some take. I don't think anyone is getting their normal margin, but this is where we all settled. In this particular instance, I am more than happy to offer this beer that we love at this price. Again, a balancing act for all involved!

I don't much like feeling the need to defend practices and pricing (this is not in regards to any specific comment), but in this case, because of the deviation from our 'norm,' it felt important to me personally!

You shouldn't need chains going out over the Oregon Coast Range (max elevation is like 2-3k), but its a pretty windy road and could have ice/snow in spots (although check ODOT for Highway 6 status).

I doubt you'd need chains, but heading out on 22 from Salem there's definitely a chance for icy/slick spots once you get into the forested/hilly parts, basically from the Valley Junction turn-off (just before Spirit Mountain) all the way to Hebo.

Thanks for the info gents. I can handle a little snow/ice ... I don't at all mind driving slow. My main concern is getting stuck somewhere.

Thanks for providing some additional info, though I have come to give you the benefit of the doubt and assumed most of these things. To be clear, I don't have an issue with the price ... I think you will find that you could have charged significantly more and folks would still be clamoring to get their hands on a bottle. Just not for me is all. And that is just fine.

i appreciate you taking the time to shed some light on how it was rolled out, even though i know its not something you enjoy having to do in any given situation. as long as they ran it by you guys and you were cool with them announcing for you, i have no qualms. ill see you guys next week! excited for the event.

One of the coolest looking bottles I've ever seen, worth the price for the art alone. Very cool work @deGardebrewing any spare bottles or labels (empty ones)?

I'd be interested to hear what folks thought of Elements of Composition. It sounds like this lasted at least into Sunday which is pretty phenomenal ... even if it was in part due to weather.

On a related note ... I noticed that some folks had their bottles signed (presumably by the brewers). Is this a thing? I have never seen, heard, or considered getting an autograph from a brewer. Don't get me wrong I got nothing for respect for Trevor and Lindsey but this just caught me a little off guard. I guess it makes more sense with this bottle then others. Since it has such killer artwork you are more likely to want to display it after drinking it (if that's your thing). If anything though I would personally want the bottle to be autographed by the label artist in that case. I'm trying to think of an analogy. Maybe asking the chef at a fine restaurant to sign a menu or something?

I don't know. We are a strange people.

The artist was here along with all three brewers. We were asked to sign a few (I said the artist needed to be in on it too). We all did. Not something we typically do, but in the celebratory moment with some of our favorite brewers and people, yeah.
    I'm game for that.

I should add, I could not have been happier with how the collaboration turned out. It is sadly gone now, excepting on-premises that will happen on occasion.
    Great brewers, and great people.

Hey guys. I'll be visiting Portland maybe... and if that happens, my first destination is de Garde, for sure. However, I heard there are lots of snow in Oregon. Would it be hard to drive down to de Garde from Portland? Kinda worried. Thanks and cheers.
