As we all know, glassware plays a vital role in how we enjoy a beer. I've never been one to stick to a strict standard (i.e. an IPA MUST be drank from an IPA glass, a hefe MUST be drank from a hefe glass), though it is nice to abide by formal decorum (but honestly, how often does that happen?). The ol' trusty pint glass or the ubiquitous Duvel tulip have seen their share of mileage. But this thread isn't about the time we had a perfect beer-to-glassware match. It's about horrendously mismatched beer-to-cup moments.

I'll cut right to the chase. I drank a Parabola out of a red solo cup. Believe me I'm not proud of it. I flew down to Key West, FL for a bachelor party and couldn't transport glassware on my carry-on luggage. Little did I know a fellow beer loving friend of mine was bringing a fresh 2014 Parabola to share with me. It was too late at night to drive to the nearest tourist trap shop and buy a Key West pint glass so I bit the bullet and drank it out of a red solo cup. Yes, it's true. The only thing I take solace in is that 1) the beer was still remarkably good regardless of what I drank it out of and 2) I drank it surrounded by palm trees and a curious iguana.

Share your stories about terribly mismatched glassware experiences here.

It's okay, Bob put down that sword! It was just one little mistake! You are still in the club, chilling in Key West is about the only thing that save you. Never pour a beer of that caliber ever again into a red solo cup. I'd rather see you drink it from cupped hands.

I had to finish my TG Golden Nugget out of a golf shoe for missing a putt. Still delicious.

Ha ha, yeah I've had a few of those solo cup moments too. Most recent were KBS and before that Firestone 19th anniversary. Hey, I wanted to share those beers with a friend, we were not anywhere near "proper" glassware and plastic cups were all we had available at the time we were able to crack those open.

Something is better than nothing, especially with beers like that. I've poured them in Solo cups of all the colors that they make, and will do so again as the situation requires. No embarrasment here .

Never let perfection be the enemy of the good.

I love a great beer, in proper glassware, and will only add a review here under those conditions.

However, I've been to many festivals that use plastic cups instead of glassware. Definitely not my preference, but it doesn't stop me from attending.

At hockey games, they serve craft beer in plastic solo cups. I thoroughly enjoy having a good beer while I watch the game, even if its not the best conditions to try the beer.

Honestly, sharing parabola, with a friend under palm trees in Key West by improvising with solo cups, sums up all that is great about beer today. Hard to beat good beer, good people in special place.

There is no embarrassing glassware. Thats a you problem. Beer isn't and shouldn't be that serious. I have had lambic from a coffee cup. No one cares.

This. A great beer, with a great friend, in a great atmosphere. Fuck the red solo cup. It was a great and memorable beer experience.

    "fresh" from 2014??!?

But seriously... I shared with friends Firestone Walker 19 on a mountain top on the 4th of July in red solo cups. It was great.

I usually keep a sleeve of clear plastic cups in my car at all times in case of such emergencies. Not for drinking IN the car however, let me make that clear

When I got into craft last year, at first I drank from the bottle, but quickly found out on these forums that this is bad form. I knew I had some beer glasses somewhere, but I couldn't find them so used a coffee mug. I quickly got some decent glassware and now have a bit of collection from my favorite breweries.

The thing about glass is it is inert, meaning it doesn't interact with the liquid in it. Frankly, ceramic, as in coffee mugs, is good second choice.

The problem with drinking from a bottle is you lose the nose. Smell makes up a large part of what we actually taste. Cut off the nose, and you have handicapped the beer.

One of the first craft beers I tried was a Bourbon Barrel Stout, cold from the bottle. I immediately swore off BBS as being too "bourbony". The folks on these forums suggested drinking from a glass, and allowing it to warm first. Now BBS's are my favorite.

Before I got more educated, my first ever Prairie BOMB was out of the bottle, and I didn't like it. A good friend educated me, and told me to drink the other one I had out of a snifter. Night and day.

 Yes, I get it. BCBS, as with most big barrel aged stouts, are not at their best cold.

The thing about cold beer is it numbs the palette, decreasing your ability to taste the beer. There is a reason why some brewers prefer their beer drank ice cold from the bottle.

BA Imperial Stouts are generally best served at cellar temperature, around 55F, and many improve as they warm. In my opinion, high ABV beers like BCBS, benefit from some oxidation, much like wine, as some if the booziness dissipates.

Again, a big part of these big BA stouts is the nose, you don't want to miss out on that.

A little different because it was a bottle share, but my first time trying anything from treehouse. It was still a great beer.

I haven't had beer in a plastic cup so far, but I have had it in glasses with silly things like geese or E.T. on them. Actually, that happens pretty much every time I make a trip to visit my family, since there's only one actual beer glass in my mom's house and that one belongs to my sister.

But yeah... no reason to be embarrassed by what kind of cup you have. I'm sure glass is better, but if there was a situation where my only two choices were a cheapo plastic cup and drinking the beer directly out of the bottle, it's going in the plastic cup every time.

You really should hop on over to WBAYDN every once in a while. Glassware is kind of a thing over there (for some ). Cheers in whatever vessel you choose!

I had an Ithaca Daydreamer Kolsch from a plastic cup once. Not a red solo cup or a clear disposable cup, (I don't think those are that terrible if there's no proper glassware) but one of those thick-walled, colorful plastic cups that would typically be used by children for the bathroom. I don't think it was clean, either. It tasted terrible and I haven't had a kolsch since, although I'm pretty sure I just had a befouled experience with the cup and I should try a kolsch again sometime.
