Happy NBS all! Thanks @cavedave for the usual great start to the Sunday and a really great funny picture meme. It's pretty cold here today in the low 30's and I was looking for something slightly strong, malty and interesting. I think I got one.

Today I'm starting off with a Dogfish Head - Immort Ale.

    Beer notes/Description:
This is last year's vintage bottled on 12/21/15.

This beer pours beautiful dark maroon ruby red with a creamy khaki colored foam head.

The aroma boasts candied dark fruits like fig, plum, prune, raisin, grape, and upon noticing, juniper berries. I also get some bready malty sweet notes with maple syrup, peat smoke, some spice, oak barrel, vanilla, caramel, toffee, molasses, brown sugar, with earthy herbal grassy pine.

The taste is super smooth and malty sweet with candied dark fruits, detectable maple syrup, peat smoked malt, spice, oak barrel, vanilla, caramel, toffee, molasses, brown sugar, with earthy herbal grassy pine hops.

The feel is smooth medium bodied, thick and creamy with moderate low carbonation that is present but not too high. The alcohol is hardly perceptible in this brew making it an easy drinker at 11%, at least with some time on it.

Overall I am really pleased with this beer and I would love to have this throughout the cold months of winter. It's very comparable to a nice barrel aged scotch ale with maple, vanilla, and peat-smoked barley. I will be revisiting this beer again when I see it, and might just grab a few more of these 12/21/15's from my local shop.

Cheers all and Happy New Beer Sunday!

So my wife is now a complete craft convert, but mostly Pilsners (baby steps, be patient). To keep her interested I have tried to pickup a new Pilsner every beer trip I make for myself.
Here we have Lawnmower Lager from Caldera in Oregon. Not really "lawnmower" weather, but heh, its only 3.9%, an easy start to a Sunday afternoon session. Not a Pilsner either, but heh, she used to drink Miller Lite.
Foam Monster! Even pouring down the side of the glass, this is the result. (Maybe the Pilsner glass found its way to the dishwasher and soap again, I don't know, I have limited control over these things). It eventually laced the glass, but then dropped to a sad whisker-thin ring of white bubbles.
Sweet buttery hell, there is mild diacetyl in this, not a lot, but present in the nose. Of Course some may be due to the malt (only listed as two row). Hops are Willamette.
Taste is even sweeter and more buttery. Drinkable, but not something to buy again. Oh, wife did not like it either.

This marks my first beer from these folks in California. Fun fact: I actually got this beer from trading with someone who doesn't get Modern Times distributed to them either. I was considering ordering this beer online at one point, so I'm glad it finally found its way to me, even if it was from the opposite direction from where it's brewed. Working full-time, I find it much more difficult to crack open a bomber. Figured now was a good time, as I lounge around doing laundry, and watching The Office.

Modern Time's City of the Dead.

Pours black with a finger of camel colored head. Head formation is quick, and quickly disappears. No lacing left behind. Barrel, bourbon, coffee, roasted malts, and chocolate show up in a boozy formula of an aroma. The flavor profile features roasted and toasted malts, with additional notes of barrel, bourbon, coffee, and chocolate. It is somewhat on the boozy side, but otherwise tasty. The booze is not enough to be over-powering, or making this beer undrinkable. Mouth feel has a medium consistency, with a smooth, glass-like texture. Overall, it's a nice coffee beer, with quality booze notes. It is certainly on the more drinkable side of the bourbon-aged spectrum then some other similar beers.

Glad you like that one Dave. I find the Sucre base, very sweet, to be so well partnered with the Madeira. I'm a little gun shy with wine/beer combos/barrel aging. Having said this, I have been pleasantly surprised, and dare I say mind expanded by the Bruery in this area. I have turned over a new leaf.

Did you use two hands to measure that head?

Kidding aside, it looks tasty. Awesome job on getting your wife converted to craft beer. It's a dangerous game. On the one hand, it's nice to have a partner to finish off the bomber, on the other hand, it might mean you have to share some of the delectable, rare brews. Haha. Cheers, and thanks for the review!

Happy NBS! It turned into a winter wonderland with the snow last night. My wife and I shoveled driveway early, and I did some clean up a couple of other times after the plow passed by.

Enjoying an amazing local beer. Lakefront Beerline aged in whiskey barrels pours a deep brown with some amber tones with a thin khaki head and no lacing. Aroma is pleasant bourbon, thick caramel, brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, dark fruit, and raisins. I taste sweet bourbon, vanilla, thick caramel, dark fruits dusted in brown sugar. Toffee and a bit of oak in the back. Slight bit of alcohol and I do not notice any bitterness from the hops. Medium body with light carbonation. It is syrup like and rich on the palate. This is best beer that Lakefront may never brew again and I wish I had a few more bottles.

Yeah really digging it, very thoughtful pick for which I am grateful. Once it hits room temp. you expect it to be all hot and the sweet extreme but not so with this baby. The flavors crest and stay clean. I love that madeira aroma as the glass upturns for a sip.

The pain killing properties of this baby also need be mentioned appreciatively.

Ah, gotcha. Living where I do, I can't hear "milkshake" without thinking about Tired Hands' flour-addled monstrosities. Yeah, the foam was rocky and abundant.

G' afternoon NBS-ers! Thanks for the start today @cavedave ! And thanks to Maria (@utopiajane )for "reminding" me that I had this beer in my fridge thanks to @beertunes !

So today's entry is another from that NBS BIF: Monkey's With Knives....

    Wander Brewing: Foeder Wen 2016
    [IMG]
Farmhouse Ale Aged In Oak Foeders On Elderberries.

Poured from a 500 ml bottle into a Teku glass.

Appearance: Light brown to a deep raspberry red body, with a full finger of head that slowly collapsed to a thin cap. Tan bubbles.

Aroma: Smells a lot like a red wine. Plenty of fruits, oak and plenty of funk.

Taste: Straight up farmhouse funk. Oak. And those elderberries, well they add a balanced sweetness that evens out the barnyard funkiness. It's like a delicious fruit juice. I really like the amount of oak that comes out of this one.

Mouthfeel: Full of flavor, but light and easy to drink. Quite a bit of carbonation in this one too.

Overall: A decent farmhouse beer with a drinkability and juiciness that makes this one damn near perfect.

    Cheers!

What's up BA? Chilly start to the day, was barely clinging to positive numbers this morning. Worked on the addition all day.

Trying out an Allagash Émile this afternoon. A sour ale aged in Pineau des Charentes foudres.

Pour is a deep red Brown, clear, one finger head reducing to a halo, and negligible lacing.

The aroma is currants and cherry, hints of oak, earthy and fruity. The smell tells it will be a little tart.

The taste leads an immediate tartness, though not puckering. Then the big flavors start to develop, currants, black cherry, some dark fruit, dates and prunes, more subtle notes of oak, toast, and almond. Slight note of funk, butyric acid perhaps, likely from the pedio. Just between sweet and dry and a light bitterness.

Mouthfeel is thin and light but a nice carbonation really lifts the body and keeps it from being overly watery.

Overall it's another Allagash sour that won't let you down. Excellent development of flavors without letting the barrel (foudres) flavors take over. A nice tartness that doesn't overwhelm the palette or the beer. I preferred James and Julie over this one, but I will probably but this again.

    Cheers!

Next beer, and I'm not too sure about this one.
Summit 30th Anniversary English-Style Barleywine Ale.
Starts off sweet, but then turns funky, and I'm not sure in a good way. I'll age the other 2 bottles, to see how it changes, and hopefully better.

    look: 4.25 | smell: 3.5 | taste: 3 | feel: 3.75 | overall: 3.25

This pours a clear amberish color. The head is fairly thick and frothy white. Decent carbonation in the beer. The nose is hard to tell. Very subtle. I almost get some fruit, but so slight. The taste is sweet. Strange aftertaste. Bitterness, but not in the best way. I don't know what to think about this. Will ageing improve it? I don't know, but fresh isn't the best. Not watery feeling. Just not sure about this beer.

I am back again for my second NBS post this time I am trying a new beer from a new brewery for me. Malty by Nature from Southern Pines Brewing, it is a Scottish Export Ale that I picked up Friday while in Southern Pines. I only got one since I was not sure how good it was but I am very impressed with the big caramel flavors and the very smooth creamy feel.

Appearance 3.75 - Pours crystal clear reddish brown color with minimal tan head that dissipates to nothing very little lacing.

Aroma 4 - Caramel, roasted malts, nutty, slightly floral.

Taste 4 - Big malt flavor, sweet caramel, nutty, biscuit.

Feel 4 - medium body smooth creamy feel

Overall 3.99 - Really well done beer, caramel malty flavors really stand out.

Happy Sunday NBS players. Pretty damn cold here on the island and it looks like winter is here in full effect. Starting to see some flurries now too. Spent the day watching football and now I'm locked into the Jets game who are off to another wonderful start.

My new beer today is BA Narwhal w/red and black currants a part of sierra nevadas trip in the woods series. The brew checks in at 9.8% with no bottle date.

A black and oily pour with a steady head. On the nose I get wood, bourbon, and fruit. The drinking starts rather sweet, fruity, and tart with a pretty smooth flow. The barrel seems to make it's presence known more on the finish. The flavor notes are all over the place. Lots of dark candied fruits with raisins, figs, and plums. Barrel notes of oak, vanilla, chocolate and the currants give it a rather berry/cherry feel. These all combine together to give it a sort of wine/acid/sour/bourbon mess. The mouth feel is full bodied and smooth.

Overall, I'm just not a fan. The sour/wine feel is a real turn off for me. I'm in the 3/3.5 range at best. Is the ginger one bad too? Why did they waste so much good ba nar-nar for these variants?

Hello gang. We're getting our first snow of the season here in North Jersey and it's beginning to look a lot like Christmas! I'm finally trying this holiday classic. Here's my review:

    4.21/5 rDev +0.5%
    look: 4 | smell: 4.25 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 4 | overall: 4.25

2016 vintage. Poured into tulip glass. It pours a cola ruby-brown with a buff colored head and lacing that dissipated quickly. It smells of candied plum and raisin, as well as banana, brown sugar, coriander, clove, and a whiff of tobacco. The taste largely follows the nose but there is also some cinnamon and and a hint of peppery hops at the finish. The fruit flavors really come out as the glass warms. It also has a dry finish. This ale features lively carbonation and the 10% ABV gives it a punch. This ale is a holiday classic and I'm glad to have finally tried it. Like It's a Wonderful Life, it will be a regular at my house.

Enjoy your new beers everyone. As always, I'm enjoying your reviews!

Back with a sorta new beer (I think I had a festival pour last summer). It's Perry Street's Citra Dust IIPA. Not formally reviewing, but I can tell you it's juicy, spicy and dangerously drinkablle for something 9%.
Now I'm working on their Flanders Sour Red, brewed with "cold pressed cranberries" and clocking in at 6%. It's darker than I expected, and is dry and tart, but not super puckeringly so.

Interesting thread for sure  I think it's the first time I've seen this being a noob

I guess my post here is perfect as first time trying this brew and this beautiful glass that I was given earlier today by my beer girl

First off a wonderful Leffe glass that will get some heavy usefulness:slight_smile:

Since I already had my early High Westie for the day , I was looking for something lighter and more refreshing.
I sometimes just let my beer girl pick me out 6 different brews to give a try as adventure is what it is all about .
This one was ice cold in the fridge from 2 weeks ago .
    TROEGS LA GRAVE
    TRIPLE GOLDEN ALE
    BOTTLE CONDITIONED
    8 % abv

This girl never disappoints me in the majority of her choices and has delivered once again.
Beautiful golden ale with a huge head and nice flavors that closely remind me of a Belgian:slight_smile:

Hoping they still have more as I'm getting this again for a nice brew with most any dinner choice .

    CHEERS BA FRIENDS!!!

Hope you all have a wonderful Sunday
