Had a pretty big share a couple weeks ago with some friends. I invited a buddy whom I had second thoughts about, but I'm a nice guy and was gonna give him a chance since I was hosting. I know he has a decent little collection of local BA stouts and sours because of personal trades and brewery events (he is not an active mail trader). I supplied a 5 year vert of bcbs, others contributed some side project, a rare, bcbbw vert, fresh IPA's, we had a great line-up. Then my friend busts out 2 old pale ale bombers and expired Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale. He did however save the day with a bottle of Belgium Red, lol. The fact is he purposely didn't bring anything worth a damn because he's a selfish prick.

What else pisses you off during beer shares?

When every beer is "whale" status, super high ABV Stouts, sours and DIPA's.

Sure, I love trying hard to get beer and whatnot... But I also love trying other states shelf turds regardless of style. Pilsners, cream ales, amber ales, lagers of all types, etc...

I can honestly say that there is nothing about a bottle share that could possibly piss me off.

I don't go to bottle shares and that really grinds my gears.

The one I go to is not a whale share by any means, most beers brought are out of distro shelf beers. The only thing that kinda bothers me is when somebody brings just home brew. I am more than willing to try your home brew and give you feedback, but when everyone is bringing at least 1 $10+ beer you should bring a semi decent bomber of something, or if you didn't plan ahead get a growler at the brewery that hosts the share, they're $13.

When the atmosphere is more about geeking out over yeast and hop varieties and not enjoying the company you're with. It's fucking beer, guys, not homework. Let's all be friends here.

When you bring a beer that flew across the country in your suitcase but is eye rolled because it's not a whale or isn't en vogue at the moment.

I'll drink it myself next time ya dicks.

I'm not a huge fan of bottle shares. It's nice to share, but it gets overwhelming quick. If I want a 2oz pour of something, I'll go to my favorite bottle shop's weekly tasting.

I do host one friend for some beer shares. We both just bring a bomber and talk running, life, finances, beer, etc. I trust him through and through, so he always shows up with something nice to try.

All good points. Good post and good thread.

I'll follow dcotom and say that there's nothing that really pisses me off, but I'm always aggravated by the know-it-alls, and those who lord over the event as if they're the grand master (usually because they've brought something special).

But this isn't just at bottle shares, but throughout life in general, and 99% of the time I find that the know-it-alls don't know it all, and the grand masters are just machismo assholes who are trying to make up for something lacking in themselves.

Fortunately I've run into more genuinely happy, friendly, and interesting people than the previously mentioned; and some very humble, gracious, and generous people who really make the event shine despite the fact that they don't want any part of the spotlight.

It is very overwhelming at times. Especially if you have to stay on schedule to try all the beers brought. That's why usually we have a 5 person limit. A friend goes to a top 250 share every year and said it is crazy. I don't think I would enjoy that much.

When a rude host invites me even though he doesn't like me, hoping I'll bring a whale, then insults me on the internet when he doesn't Iike what I bring.

Boy that gets me every time.

Hahaha. To be fair the Kentucky BBA was a bit weak

Personally I've never done any of these hardcore shares for many reasons stated in the thread already. And the idea of a group of neckbeards getting shitfaced off a ton of ultra rare / expensive beers just seems a little comical / waste of beer (although I'm sure there are plenty of fun ones that don't go that route).

My bro-in-law and I have each contributed a few nice bottles and then shared them with some less-nerdy friends on a few occasions. But always pretty low key with the focus being on hanging out and letting the other guys try some stuff that's new to them.

Oh for sure, I've had the Kentucky BBA, I get it. To start a forum thread to call the guest a selfish prick is a bit extreme.

I am assuming OP and his guests run in the same circles and there is a good chance that his guest will see or be told about this post.

I am a ticker, but I still don't think I could count that large share. I want enough time and beer to enjoy each beer.

I've thought about getting together a group of 3 or 4, and doubling my current size, but I'm getting a lot of what OP mentioned. Folks who would bring the current, semi-hard to obtain beer, while myself and one other guy tap our cellar.

Maybe I should just try and find another group to do one share with and see how I like it.

I do have a six-pack share event, which is pretty fun. That's perhaps the biggest bottle share I visit. Everyone brings a six pack and we all drink the same beer at the same time. No one can open the next beer until the current round is finished. It's with folks who think Lagunitas is the end-all beer, so it isn't the best, but it's always a blast sipping some beers I usually overlook, talking smack, and seeing my friends.

    My pet peeve?

There are typically too many beers and too many people for the share to be about the beer and the sharing rather than about ticking as many samples as possible and hanging out with lots of folks.

Both can be fun but if I'm bringing a couple of hard to find beers for friends to sample I want all of us to enjoy the beers not just the drinking.

I don't care and I called him out at the party. I know him personally and you don't, so how do you know he's not selfish? Other guests questioned when I invited him and I said it was my party and I gave him a chance. He blew it.

You are right. I don't know whether or not he is selfish, nor do I know if he is indeed a prick.

I do find it rude to invite company to ones house in expectation that they will bring something you like, then publicly insult them on the internet when their offerings do not meet your expectations.

    To each their own though.
