I may have missed it somewhere in this thread but what's the deal with the abv increase in some of the Shorts brews this year? I'm not complaining, just genuinely interested in what changed :sunglasses:

That's a great question, and from what I've been told we simply have a lot more accurate equipment, these days. For example, Juicy Tree always hit me like a train when I've had it, but when it was listed @ 7.5% I was utterly confused. Now, not so much.

Juicy Tree typically hits me hard too, but its usually because I crush 2-3 of them haha.
    LOVE Juicy Tree!

Feels like forever since I bought my last Short's specialty 6 pk. (less than 2 weeks is a long time for me/them). Wake me up when Aorta is released. One of the last few old era Shorts staples that's eluded me (and i'm sure many of you too). really excited to try it. love hoppy reds.

Picked up the new sampler pack, Mmmmkay is tasting great like usual, Small Heath was a smooth mild ale, love the label on Small Heath as well. About to crack open a Bim Bam Boom, seems like a great beer for this cold weather.

First I'm hearing of this variety pack. Awesome, MmmKay is one of my all-time favorite Shorts beers!

Also looks like Aorta is now on shelves.

Aorta is a straight up booze cruise, folks. Be careful when handling this one.

Weird thing about the variety pack, there's nothing in the Beer Announcements or News link on the website; however, clicking the Variety Pack link on the 2016 release schedule takes you to it under Our News. Anyway, here's the rundown.

Ester is a clear golden Extra Pale Ale with an abundance of doughy, fruity, and spicy yeast and hop aromas. With a very light body and some delicate cracker-like malt flavors, the focus quickly shifts to big bitter hop flavors of dandelion and similar leafy greens, punctuated by a dry finish.

    4.5% ABV
    53 IBU

Small Heath is an English Mild Ale inspired by the show “Peaky Blinders.” This ale is copper colored and has a lasting white head. The nose is malt forward with notes of toasted grain and caramel, but balanced with herbal and grassy flavors derived from the use of English Noble hops. The beer is creamy, medium bodied, and finishes smooth.
    3.9% ABV
    22 IBU

Bim Bam Boom is a rich dark Stout brewed with cacao nibs, cayenne pepper, and orange. Initial flavors are of sweet citrus followed by a lively tingling of peppery spice. A finish complete with roasted cocoa and tart orange flavors leaves a lasting impression.
    10.3% ABV
    36 IBU

MMMKAY is an India Pale Lager originally produced from the final runnings of Aww Jeah. Since then, its own malt bill has been developed so the good people of Michigan can have access to MMMKAY even when Aww Jeah hasn’t been brewed. The initial fragrances are of bold citrus fruit; guava, orange, and lemon. As the head settles, the aromas shift to fresh evergreen accents. Indicated by the light body and pale yellow appearance, the focus of the beer is on hops, rather than malt. An array of enjoyable American hop flavors shock the palate ranging from slightly fruity to an intense earthy pine. A bold bitterness dominates the finish, enhanced by the clean unobtrusive nature of its lager origin.
    5.6% ABV
    72 IBU

Decent enough pack, BBB is probably my favorite, although I haven't tried Small Heath. If you look around, there's still some BBB on the shelves, saw a six pack of that and Key Lime Pie (!!) at a store in Goodrich last weekend. Wish I'd kept some Aww Jeah around to pair with Mmmkay, too.

IIRC, wasn't BBB only around 7% when it was in sixers? If so, I'm intrigued to see how the 10% batch compares.

I'm assuming it gotta boost when Short's started using their newer equipment for measuring ABV.

I would buy this primarily for Ester, it is pretty good as I recall. Small Heath sounds promising too.

Aorta ale is so good and smooth, probably my favorite red ale.

All I can say is wow, you are 100% correct. This is my first rodeo with Aorta Ale and holy smokes, it's delicious! That 9.6% isn't noticeable in the slightest way. Brown sugar nose and nice caramel and dark fruit flavor lead to that great hop finish. I'm very impressed with how complex this one is. *high five*... (forgive my non-matching glassware)

I really dig the new variety pack. 12 pks of MMMKAY wouldn't be a bad idea, either...
