The way I feel is either have a formula we can see or don't have it at all, because the points now seem random and have no credibility behind them, imo anyway. I would be just as fine if we had no karma points at all. In fact I was enjoying not having karma points for that short while we had none.

I would like a point system which is specific to me and unique from all other users except to the extent that, any time smakawhat gets a point, I get four. I don't need to know how it works, just so I get more. When you have a minute. Thanks.

Then just don't worry about it/think about it... I have never personally been too concerned about it (occasionally look, like when it changes, of the values of myself and some other longtime contributors just to make sure everything seems like it is rewarding contribution appropriately).

I'm not worried about it, just responding to a reply. Cheers

Absurd. There's nothing random about the points, and they're as credible as the person behind the contributions.

You clearly need a break from the thread as you're just repeating yourself at this point, adding nothing to the thread and simply posting to be a Debbie Downer.

Happy to see it back, and under a new system if it should be more meaningful to the contributions of the posters. As I said in a different threads, rating, reviewing beers and place is contributing more than likes and posts, even if I did reach a certain number of either. Everything count, sure. But 1000 full reviews is more contributing than accumulating 10.000 likes.

Though I understand that everyone here is free to beer advocate the way he wants, regardless of karma.

Karma comes. Karma goes. And then it's back again.

Stick around and you'll see Zwickelbier or Faro become relevant.
    Oh look, something shiny!
    Cheers.

IMHO, this is indeed great news. It is my fervent hope that at long last, I can obtain the BA equivalent of a 32nd degree mason, complete with a secret decoder ring, a secret handshake and a BA fez (which I will of course wear 24/7, 365 days out of the year!).

Karma is a wheel. If you don't like the current system, just wait a few years, and I'm sure it will change again.

This concept is common in many ethical systems. One's motives are more pure if there is no "goal" to achieve. For some people, however, human nature calls them to compete, thus the disonace some people may be experiencing.

Besides, a little mystery is good for us all, and adds to the fun.

I look forward to getting a better sense of what the number means. In isolation, I don't see it meaning anything; but if there is some sort of list of the top Karma accumulators to put it in some sort of meaningful context, that would be nice. Not that it's a competition by any means, but to have some idea of what my number really means, if anything.

I can see folks' personal achievements being recognized via Karma as a good attraction to many of the kind of beer lovers that make this site popular and worthy. I admit I am happy to see the word Karma so often again when using the site. So welcome back Karma.

I hope that -- as with broader karma -- there are negative points to be had for, among others, such things as:
    • Penning multiple "I don't really care but ..." posts
    • Replying uselessly to an OP (e.g., person is looking for a particular something in A Very Specific Place and Nimrod writes, "Hey, you can find that at X in The Very Opposite Corner of the State.")

Like the old system, and as stated, obtaining negative points is possible. But it doesn't work like this.
Any points awarded for adding the beer would be removed upon merging the duplicate entries.

And this should be the basis of why this community is strong. Conduct that brings about true advocacy of beer (AALs and DIPAs alike) which allows for the sharing of wisdom from all; those with low point totals are respected for their contributions every bit as much as those with high point totals.

Now shut up and bring me my fez. (this is joke....I'm a jokester...)

    Mystical point system?

This sounds like a brainchild from the "Alstrom Family Holiday Soire," sometime around 3:30AM.
