While Westy 12 ages with the best of 'em, I think what sets it apart are the hop notes. Those Poperinge hops add an herbal bitterness that the other Trappists (and even St. B) lack. It's great both fresh and with some time on it.
My other faves would be Pannepot and Achel Extra Brune. Both of those have malt for days.

Agreed. I had a 2012 a few nights ago. Very good. Have another 2012 waiting on me down stairs and just picked up two new bottles. It's a great priced beer to try cellaring and tastes great too.

I will say that I just discovered my least favorite Quad is the Victory Hoppy Quad. To me that was more like a Double IPA. I couldn't find any of the dark sweet malts, raisins, plum, prunes, and spice characters that to me define what a good Quad should be. But alas, I know I will be in the minority. This is getting pretty decent ratings on BA. Mine wil probably be the lowest.

    Yes I know. Picky-picky.

I think abt 12 is much better than rochefort 10. Chimay is also great and three philosophers is pretty sweet, but still one of my favorites.

Rochefort 10 is the standard which all others will be judged by but for an every day, readily available, reasonably priced Quad, I love Boulevard Sixth Glass.

Rochefort 10 and St. Bernardus are my favorite quads. It's crazy that some of the best quads in the world just collect dust on the shelves. I had the opportunity to have some aged Pannepot and it is definitely up there with the top quads. I recently acquired a Westy 12 that I will have when I move into my new house and I can't wait to try it.

OP, you have nailed it. St Bernardus. Rochefort 10 is where it's at.

Brewery Vivant's Wizard Burial Ground is an excellent bourbon barrel aged quad. It was released just three weeks ago. Brewery Vivant only distributes to Michigan and Chicago (and maybe some Indiana). I love this beer enough that I made sure to visit BV and pick up a case because it's not possible to purchase this quantity in shops.

Brewery Vivant also released a quad aged in Ardbeg scotch barrels for the first time. They called it Macwizard. I had my first one a few nights ago. It took a few drinks to acquire the taste but once I did it was fantastic!

had that Xmas Eve ... such a treat and it's a 10-minute drive across town to get all I want; typically I just want one, stick that one bottle in the fridge, forget about it, and it's there when I need it ... two weeks, six months, three years, whatever -- it's ready to go

Speaking of, I bought this bomber last winter, shoved it in the back of the fridge and looked at it daily (and lovingly) for a year:
.... and we're at T-minus and counting until I pop that cork ... so excited :grinning::grinning::grinning:

Rochefort 10 is my favorite, even better than Westvleteren 12, but by "better" I mean better by the tiniest of split hairs. Chimay Blue, Westmalle, St. Bernardus, La Trappe, Val-Dieu Grand Cru ... the Trappists and Belgians make great ones. Every one I've tried from Belgium has been good enough that I'll buy again.

Three Philosophers and Sixth Glass are shockingly good. It's not a style we've mastered on this side of the pond from my experience, though mine is VERY limited. My bet is the Sierra Nevada Ovila series has some good ones.

Not that this thread needed my $0.02  ... in fact, I'm going to go back and re-read some of it :wink:

Great post, perfectly put and ...

... I think this is why I like Rochefort 10 better: I can get it without spending ALL the money. If I could get Westy 12 as easily as Rochefort 10, I'd do as many side-by-sides as it took to finally and ultimately declare a personal champion quad. Hopefully, it would take A LOT of side-by-sides. :grinning:

When all else is equal, I rate the affordable/easier-to-find beer higher. So far the beer nerds haven't shunned me from this practice, so I'll keep doing it.

One other note: Am I the only one who thinks while we're doing these quad talks, "What about the dubbel?" I know the quad is richer and more complex, but if you'd like to have at least a semblance of a session with the abbey ale, a bomber of Chimay Red or a couple three Rochefort 6s or Westmalle dubbels allow for it.

*runs away ducking from the Westy 12 and St. Bernardus 12 empties being hurled at his head*

Not a quad per se, but Weyerbacher 20th anniversary ale was outstanding. Think I liked it more than Rochefort 10.

Retired now, but you can still find some lingering bottles of this gem sitting around and I'd imagine it holds up pretty well.

Oomegang Three Philosophers was one of the beers the started into craft. Great beer. Firestone Walker Stickee Monkey is world class, IMO.
