Well, it finally happened to me. Two months ago I could get '10 World Wide Stout off the shelf coated in dust at several different stores (WWS moves very slow around here due to price), mentioned as much in a thread and had a BA ask me to grab him a couple bottles. Said no problem, worked out the details of the trade and exchanged addresses.

After hitting up four different shops packed to the brim with '11s I managed one single bottle of '10.

Has this happened to you guys before, where you just knew you had something available only to find out later you were wrong after you set up a trade?

This is also the first time I've done this without verifying I could get what I said I could get, so I won't be making this mistake again.

Recently happened to me with KRBC class V stout. I had seen it everywhere in town, until I set up a trade for it. It suddenly became very popular and disappeared from every shelf. I felt extremely embarassed when I replied that I couldnt find it. Luckily, that trade wasnt centered around it and we were able to work something out. I haven't done it since, even with beers I saw on the shelf hours prior.

Last year I set up a trade with me sending BCBS for some Redbud saisons... the guy shipped to me before BCBS came out and I very nearly missed out on finding BCBS. It caused a great deal of stress and it is something I won't be doing ever again. Not worth it.

I dont set anything in stone until I have beer in hand. I've told people before that it is something I should be able to get, and we then work out details after I pick it up (or cant pick it up anymore)

It happens to most frequent traders once or twice, it's almost a rite of passage.

this is the answer...its Murphy's law that when you set up trade on bottles not in hand...said bottles will disappear of the shelf

If I am ever possibly trading with something not in hand, I always make it clear I don't have it and don't negotiate specific bottles until I have everything in hand. Being transparent is always the best policy with pre-trades. Most people are pretty understanding if everything is on the table upfront.

if this trade was more like "gotpickitupformebro", then no worries on not having it on hand. However, if you set up a FT: WWS 10' ISO: XYZ, then yeah you should have picked up the beer ahead of time.

Happened to me with CCB Guava Grove. Watched it sit on the shelf for months, set up trade for mulitple CCB bombers, went to pick everything up...no Guava Grove. I hunted and eventually found 1 out of the agreed two. Luckily the trader was cool and l subsituted and through in a couple extra extras cause I felt like a jackass.

It's happened a few times with friends I occasionally send beer to, but I've never set up a trade around a specific beer and then been unable to deliver.

It just happened to me with Fou' Foune. I'm two bottles shy of what I thought I was getting, so I'm trading what I had set aside for myself. I do have more set aside in Brussels, however I won't be getting it here til December. Lesson learned.

I did that once but the beer was for pschul4 so I was actually happy when I had to renege on my original offer and hang him out to dry.
