Last time I was in Columbia, I stopped by Bottles and they had a great selection and it is much easier to get to than Greens.

Send me a beer mail here and let me know some details. Will meet up with you at the brewery or at a place in town that carries our stuff. Speaking of which, you could do worse than eating at places like Bourbon, The War Mouth, the Whig, or Lula Drake (all of which currently carry our beer). Prost!

Also I would like to see if @WCKDVBZ would be interested, since he seems to think we all suck here in Columbia

In the spirit of brewers reading mean tweets, @WCKDVBZ response to my invitation. Prost, and Respect Beer!

"Thanks, but I pass! I don't like Marzen, Kolsch, Kellerbier or Rauchbier. I also don't like/support breweries who can't brew their own beer. And what's even worse is that you have a very sorry ass brewery like Swamp Cabbage make them for you. You don't even offer a Hefeweizen, Dunkelweizen, Weizenbock, Doppelbock or Eisbock."

Sorry that you got a semi-rude response to generous offer.

If I ever make it to Columbia, I will definitely plan on checking out your beers. Interested in learning a little more about your operation. Any plans to add additional beers to your portfolio? Are you contracting Swamp Cabbage to brew the beers for you or is this more of an alternating proprietorship type of arrangement? Plans to set up your own brewing equipment in the future?

As you may or may not know, the odd three-tier system here has very strict legal regulations in terms of what "gypsy brewers" can legally call themselves or set up as. Alt-props, as such, are not allowed here. So legally we had to set up as contractors and lease our brand and IP -- including recipes honed on a 1 BBL system over years and with support from my favorite German breweries where I used to live -- to the host facility. Silly stuff, but lets us get these beers to market in the right way (as well as apparently getting you boycotted at times!). Glad to host you if youre in town. Just shoot me a message. As for other offerings, we are doing a Fastenbier, some Bocks, and a Czech 10° lager in the future. Maybe even a Weizen collaboration with a well-known Bavarian brewer with whom I have been working. Prost!

Sounds like some good stuff and I can appreciate the nuances of the Three-Tier System and differences in what can/can't be done in different states or what things can/can't be called (though by no means can I keep up with all those different rules).

Looks like some interesting new stuff coming in the future as well.

    It's called a Private Message/Conversation for a reason!

I gave you a very honest response. Sorry if you think it was rude/mean. I was just being 100% honest, straight to the point and without sugarcoating anything. I wasn't going to respond the first time, but it seems like you really wanted me to, since you tagged me again.

How are you suppose to convince me, when you don't even make your own beer? Make it yourself and add more variety or at least, have a better brewery make it for you. And not everybody likes light Lagers.

I missed the part where @herrburgess stopped making his own beer. What's up with that, Scott? You're outsourcing already? #BierkellerIsTheOnePercent

No offense but there are a number of good, some would say great brewers that make their beers under similar arrangements (I don't know anything about Swamp Cabbage personally but that does not mean that good beer cannot be brewed there). I'm thinking of To Øl, Evil Twin, Mikkeller, and Stillwater here.

I think you are also doing Bierkeller a bit of a disservice by calling all of his beer light lagers (which certainly has a connotation of Miller Lite/Bud Light/etc.)... They may not be styles you like but I don't think of Märzen and Rauchbier as light lagers. The ABVs seem right in line with what I would expect for the majority of German beer styles (not light).

I have heard a lot of things about Bamberg Rauchbier, but never that it is "light in flavor"

You are right. Those are great brewers, who have their beers made by other great breweries. And they prove themselves time after time. They make a wide variety of styles and keep coming out with new beers all the time. You do have a good point there and I'm just trying to explain what I meant.

By "light" I didn't just mean in color, but in body, flavor and ABV as well. But I didn't compare them to AALs.

Bierkeller beers, at their current ratings on sites such as Untappd, are either already in the top 5 for traditional versions of the style (top 20 overall) or well on their way to being there...if we could produce enough to keep up with demand. But everyone is certainly entitled to their perspective....

I'm not sure how long Bierkeller has been around (I thought they opened in 2016, so in that case probably shy of 1 year) but those brewers were not doing tons of styles right out of the gate (mostly Stouts/Porters and IPAs if I recall correctly).

You called them Light Lagers which is a style that most people associate with the beers I referenced (and I have enough experience to understand that light might not just mean color). I think many of us would disagree with rauchbier and probably märzen being light in flavor and I think the ABVs of the beers are pretty much in the normal range - they would be light if they were all like 4% but most are between 5-6%.

Cleaned this up a bit. Let's slow it down and stop the bitching. I'll keep my personal take on certain individuals out of the equation, but for the love of beer- give up the fight and go back to deleting your posts after you realize your being a jerk again.

Hey guys! I break my very long BA hiatus to say:

    1. I am marginally involved with the Bierkeller folks and so am quite biased, but I feel they make a fantastic and authentic product at an excellent price point.

    2. It doesn't bother me one bit if you don't care for Bierkeller beer, but I WILL defend it as stylistically accurate.

    3. Watch for the Fastenbier to release around the Lenten season.

Been going to Columbia for four years to visit my son at USC. IMO no breweries in a area worth visiting, lots of average beer out there. We always drink at Liberty Tap House, Flying Saucer. or World of Beer, all have decent food and nice tap lists. Greens downtown ahs great beer selection.
