But, you're not sure you disagree, right?

Yes, I can. But, typing Grape Lotion 1,000 times is redundant. Just check the next "Visiting PDX" thread for confirmation.

Yowza!!!! I'll say. Had no idea pFriem even made a Raunchbier. That's a very impressive selection.

Grape Lotion. Hope they make a beer with this name. (Something aged in a wine barrel maybe.) Really the only useful thing from this thread.

Freudian slip? Are you saying you don't like smoke beers?

IMHO, it's just as simple as that.

Looking over the last few days of posting, I'm seeing exactly what I would expect to see for any good brewery. Some folks think GN is a fantastic brewery making some of the very best beer in the NW and country, some don't really care for their beer at all, and most folks seem to fall somewhere in the middle (liking some beers they make more than others, but generally finding them to be a welcome addition to the PDX beer scene). Sounds like situation normal to me.

The only post I really had any issue with in this thread was the original one from ElijahSF, who first asks why there's any sort of negative impression of GN, and then gets his knickers in a bunch when the local membership proceeds to give him their reasons. It's obvious he's not the least bit interested in hearing anyone's reasons for why they personally aren't head over heels in love with GN, but just wanted local membership to provide their negative impressions so he could tell them how mistaken they are. Why this is such a concern or worry is something I'll never understand (I'm absolutely with Vurt on this. I think it would be a pretty dull world if everyone agreed with my opinions and impressions on beer or anything else... even though I clearly have impeccable taste when it comes to pretty much everything. :-)) However, ElijahSF seems to be another one of those people (who are thankfully very few in number) who need to have everyone agree with their impression of a favored brewery in order to validate their own impression and opinion of that brewery. Shrug. Whatever.

The new Guava IPA sounds intriguing, and I'm thinking I might need to head over to try it later today.

@beertunes. Terry. If I'm able to get you a 32 ounce growler of it, do you want me to grab one for you? You can try some of their beer and see how you like their stuff. Some of their beers are really very good (IMHO), and they do make more than just hazy NE IPA facsimiles.

Noooo... just the opposite (I like them quite a bit). My post didn't come across as expressing that?

John, I think @sharpski was referring to your use of "Raunchbier".:stuck_out_tongue:

Thanks for the offer. I'm not a person who really says no to beer.:sunglasses: I've got a bit of a stash I'm trying to work my way through at the moment, so I don't really need another beer, but.......

I'm going to assume that isn't a definitive no, and so picked up a crowler of the guava and stacks of coconut for ya. Frankly, I was underwhelmed by the guava (nice beer, but hardly anything to stand in line for), but the stacks of coconut (an imperial stout with a TON of coconut added in) was pretty delicious (my beer hating wife liked it pretty much).

Can you shoot me your current snail mail address again? I'll get this in the mail to you (fedex) on Monday.

Yeah, I may have been too clever by half on that one. I'm not a fan of smoke in beer myself, though if it's a pFriem beer, I'm still going to try it. But now I won't be able to read "rauchbier" without seeing "raunchbier" and smiling, so thanks for that.

@beertunes I think if you're able to set aside all the noise about this brewery, you'll appreciate their beers for what they are. I haven't had a lot of their stuff, but I think maybe, just maybe, they're good brewers who happen to excel at knowing what's going to be hot/trendy/sell well/generate buzz/whatever. Or who know the difference between a "good" gimmick and a Voodoo Doughnut beer. Don't judge them by their most vocal fans, at least.

I visited GN twice (in the same weekend) several months ago. Beers were good in small doses.
Had Double Stack, but couldn't imagine drinking a full glass. Same with the other flavored 'gimmicky' beers, Blueberry Muffin, Key Lime Pie, etc. Reminded me of Southern Tier in that respect.
They have certainly found the niche of NEIPAs + food-inspired adjunct beers to be successful. Will stop by next time I'm in the area, but don't feel compelled to visit.

I would pretty much agree with this. I thought the guava was good and I'm glad I was able to get a couple of crowlers, but it was far from my favorite beer that they have brewed. I think they had 2 or 3 of their other IPAs on tap during my visits that I preferred (Over Ripe in particular). I would like to point out though, that per my previous post there were no lines to be seen around GN this weekend. I was there both on Friday and Saturday (for various reasons) and there was nothing even remotely considering any sort of line. Not even a wait to get a seat.

Likewise. We stopped by on Saturday night around 7:30 and were able to get right in and get a seat at the bar (didn't appear to be a wait for a table either). Outside of the first time I visited, which was right after they opened, I've never seen any sort of crowd there, for a release event or otherwise (this was the 4th time I've stopped by). In terms of crowler purchases, it probably helps that they're prefilled, and so there's no wait to get a fill, but even so... I think we were there for roughly half an hour, and I saw only one other person stop in for a crowler purchase.

Is there ever a time when GN is busy?

I was there around 4:30 on Saturday and the place was packed with a good wait for tables.

They do get busy, but it tends to be more in line with when any good restaurant is going to be busy (meal times, weekends, etc.). Their 'releases' don't seem to play much of a part in it these days.

Thanks. I guess I've just been lucky. Every time I've gone, it's been after work, or on the weekend around meal time (5:30 or so). Outside of the first time I stopped by, I've never seen GN packed (though it was fairly busy on Saturday night).

Just went twice over the weekend. I tried every beer on the list and will say that not one of them is poorly made, and most are very good. Over-Ripe is absolutely ridiculous and Juice Box and Mandela not that far behind. Pure Guava probably my least favorite of the IPAs. Double Stack and Peanut Brother are fantastic, though as the point has already been made, I can only ever see getting a 5oz pour. The sours are on point, too. Heart of Gold was really, really good, while Blueberry muffin was more of a gimmick gone right (still, only shared a 5oz pour). The restaurant and bar were pretty full both times I was there, but there was never a wait for beers. It might have already been stated, but it also looks like they pre-fill crowlers, which is new for my experience, but smart for keeping bar flow. First time in a long time that I've gone to a brewery that seemed to nail every flavor profile they were advertising.

I've had the same experience every visit which is why when someone I know is visiting Portland I tell them to absolutely go there and they're always glad they did. Never been disappointed. As I said, they must be doing something right to nail so many different styles of beer and impress people from all over the country who are already drinking good to great beer.
