7 Nugget Nectars on tap?

So I'm in DC and plan on hitting Churchkey tonight for some beers, and while looking at the menu, I've noticed they have 7, yes, 7 different iterations of NN on tap. The standard, a nitro version, and 5 of them on cask, all finished with a different single hop in the cask- A galaxy version, citra, simcoe, Mt Hood and cascade.

Now, I may very well just end up downing enough to tell myself they're all worth a try, but any Nuggetheads have any tasting notes or recommendations to offer? Any hop you think would take the flavor to a different level? Should I spend all my money on seven different takes on the same beer? Tune in later tonight to see how hungover I'll be tomorrow.

I don't remember if it extends to cask, but Churchkey sells small pours without needing to stay within the confines of a specific number of beers (like a flight)... but I'm sure you know that. I've never had Nugget Nectar in a form other than bottled/canned, but I have been in situations where I've had the same beer via keg, cask, and nitro. If I was going, I would skip the keg and nitro and order small pours of every cask version. I personally love good cask beer, and it would be fun to have the hop additions being the single variable. If you're not crazy about cask or Nugget Nectar, it would be a different story.

NN on CO2 is my favorite, but i've had the cascade and the simcoe on cask before and remember thinking they were pretty good. I don't care for it on Nitro.

I recommend trying all of them just cause you can  Cheers

    Sounds like a great event!

I've had it a couple times on cask and I thought it was better than standard CO2 version. Personally I think Simcoe would best match the base hop profile of the beer.

YCH gives these basic descriptions for each of those hop varieties:

    Galaxy: Fruity
    Citra: Citrus, Tropical Fruit
    Simcoe: Earthy, Citrus, Pine
    Mt Hood: Spicy, Herbal
    Cascade: Floral, Citrus, Spicy

For reference, Troegs lists the following for the base beer:
    • Hops:
      • Nugget, Palisade, Simcoe, Tomahawk, Warrior
    • HopBack Hops:
      • Nugget

Awesome! Thanks for the inclusion of the hop list, I should have thought to look that up. Simcoe and Galaxy I think will be my top picks, can't wait to try them.

Also @zid, I'm now seeing that they do appear to offer small pours of the cask beers, which is great. Dependent upon how much I feel like drinking tonight, the full spread may have to happen after all. Thanks for all the input.

Hopefully you're walking/train or got a DD. With cask beer, I find it much easier to put down the pints based on the mild carbonation, and cellar serving temperature.

Plus Churchkey can grab your attention with other beers, so using public transportation is a good call . Cheers, and hope you have fun; I await the report of how it went!

A local beer bar a few years ago had Nugget Nectar on regular draft and on cask (hand pump) at the same time. I ordered two half pints of each and conducted a side by side taste testing. I much preferred the regular draft since the cask (hand pump) version had muted hop aroma/flavors.

I would think that adding hops directly to the firkin might counteract the muting of hop aroma/flavor that happens if you served Nugget Nectar on cask otherwise.

    Please report back your findings.

    Cheers!

P.S. I have never had Nugget Nectar on Nitro but even if I saw it I would not order it. Nitro also mutes hop aroma/flavor.

I'm all about some Uber and Lyft y'all, thanks for the heads up though! Expect some quality WBAYDN posts provided I maintain some semblance of coherency.

I wouldn't hesitate to get a small pour of each version. But than NN has always been one of my favorites.
    Enjoy.

I'd try small pours of each to see what I like best, surely with an event like thst they're doing 4-5 oz pours. I would think a dank hop would work best, but I'd try every option.

So the place was packed out being Friday night in DC and trying to flag down someone to get me small pours of each just was a damn hassle, but over the course of a couple hours I managed to grab full pours of the Galaxy, Citra and Simcoe versions. I tried taking pictures but it was super dark where we were standing so it didn't come out great.

For me, I thought the Galaxy hops worked the best with it on cask. The fruity notes really shined through with the lower carbonation and smoothed a lot of the bitterness and pine out. I know some have mentioned they don't prefer the cask just because of that, but for me it was exactly what I was hoping for. Would have thrown even more back if the crowd had thinned out a bit.

I remember having the cask variations at CK sometime ago they are quite tasty.

It's been awhile, but I think I remember the Columbus one sticking out and really enjoying it.

Oh, yeah all the ones I had were delicious. I'd love to have some more cask options like that down in my area, I had a ton of fun with the D.C. beer scene.

After trying the "standard" I'd eliminate that one, it's ok but it just doesn't excite me. I try it every year and every year it's the same, it's $14 sixer that's just an ok beer. I must be nuts to keep doing this, damn fresh Pernicious was right next to it and $4 cheaper.

Yeah I skipped straight to the cask ales, those were well worth checking out if you ever get the chance.
