So yesterday we had an interesting experience at an Ohio brewery which I will keep unnamed. It is one of the few in the area we have yet to visit, so when driving by we stopped in to check out the place.

First impression was great... We thought the place looked awesome and we were excited to try the beer. They don't have much, being a nano-type place, so we just picked the default flight to split between us.

Needless to the say, some of the worst beer I have had. While not the best describing off flavors and the source of said off flavors, it was bad all around. We have been to 100+ breweries and 3,000+ some distinct beers, so we have decent experience with both good and bad beer from all over. These beers had harsh alcohol notes, intense cloying sweetness and chemical-off flavors that made them very difficult to drink.

For example on 3 of the 4 of them... A spiced Belgian beer they had tasted like 2-tsp of straight clove into a 5-oz sample pour. It was unbearable. The IPA served had soap like flavor notes, excessive sweetness and just muddled (although the best of the four). They amber ale was difficult to even swallow, so much so the person I was with looked at me like "are you ok?" as I forced it down. Not exaggerating here.

Anyway... On untappd I rated as usual (from about 1/2 to 1-1/2 star tops) which was being nice, I thought... Some of the lowest I had ever given, sure, but I was just being honest...

So I wake up this morning, basically attacked by this brewery. Basically, here is a transcript of what they had said (with names taken out to respect those being attacked).

"Evidently, [ex-brewer name] fans posting above. [ex-brewer] used to brew [here], but he didn't clean, didn't make good beers, wasn't professional. I mention this, and am calling out the review - because [Invertalon] has reviewed [ex-brewer]'s crappy beer beer at [another local brewery], a very low rated brewery with unusually high rankings, and unusual low rankings for the superior [brewery visited] beer. Just look at [Invertalon] rating history.

Can't wait for the court date, [ex-brewers] poor work ethic and lack of professionalism here are well documented and will be public record. Our brewer, who had to start in July because [ex-brewer] abandoned his brewing duties, has 15 years experience. [ex-brewer] has no experience, no work ethic and an attitude that is simply an embarrassment to the profession. The proof of this statement is in the pudding. The guy is [his age] and has been fired by 3 breweries for the same reasons. [Invertalon], I'm very happy you had a bad experience here and won't be coming back. We hate wasting much needed bar stools on you! See you in court [ex-brewer name]"

So this brewery thinks its right to attack me because their beer wasn't good and assume I know this other brewer (I don't even know him) and post his dirty laundry or whatever for anyone to see.

This caught me off guard for a business to attack, even for unfavorable reviews/ratings... Especially on something petty like untappd of all things.

Anybody have something like this happen to them? This blew my mind a bit... Unprofessional, much?

Seems they take criticism well......I have seen one other brewery straight up attack and even insult another person on Untappd. It's a rather big brewery too and it was unusual because their social media record is usually great, but wow did they lose a customer or 8 that day haha. Makes no sense why these companies think this is ok.

At this point I'm not sure why you are still protecting them with the anonymity. Name and shame if you feel so strongly about their ridiculous behavior.

Or at least drop a little hint

Totally with you. This type of behavior is way out of bounds. If you put a product for sale, you have to except that it may receive criticism or dislike. Good or not. That said, I think the Brewery needs to be outed

As someone who lives 20 minutes from the Ohio border, I'd definitely like to know who it is so they don't get my business.

As an addendum to my previous post, you @invertalon really do need to write a place review. Even if you don't want to out the brewery, you need to be an advocate for the beer community.

Silly question @invertalon ....you do realize your untappd account and this one share the same user name right? Anyways thank you for the hint on whom to avoid in your area (I actually hadn't heard of them yet). If you don't want to out them here I understand , but at a bare minimum you SHOULD at least review the place so other people don't waste their time as well.

@FFFjunkie Yes, I am aware...

They also recently deleted all their comments...

And yes, I will write a place review this week on the experience.

I already decided not to visit this brewery based on their(unwanted) political views being posted on line. Looks like I'm not missing anything.

Look at OP's place reviews, pretty easy to narrow it down

Given your beer evaluation experience I have to go with your opinions of these beers being right. I'm curious what other reviews on Untappd might be showing. if this brewery can attack you, I wouldn't put it past them to provide some fake reviews if the ratings are good ones.

It's too bad the newly-opened breweries don't seek outside opinions about the quality of the beer before they open their doors. (And soon to be closed doors if they don't get their act together immediately.)

It kind of looks like they lost their other brewer sometime after the Nov 8, 2015, Place review because the ratings nose-dived after than one.

    @BeantownBrews

It's not a brewery I have rated on here (yet). I don't keep up with the reviews on BA as much as I should!

Hey, that takes all the fun detective work out of it! :grinning:

@invertalon, I respect you trying to keep things relatively anonymous, but I'd say in this instance you're not doing anyone any favors by keeping it on the dl (obviously at this point we know who it is; I'm just speaking in generalities). These guys sound like assholes, and the last thing you want to do is have out-of-towners venture in to Cleveland, land here, and leave thinking "man, OH beer culture blows!" I say this as a guy who went Dayton, OH pretty unenthusiastically, and came away pretty happy with both the town and the beer places I went to. Cleveland seems like an excellent beer city, and they deserve better than this sort of j.v. shit (which I'd normally expect from small towns with no real brewing competition).

Anyway, I feel for breweries when they get bad reviews, and I know that it's hard for the brewers (and staff) not to take it personally, but that's just part of the business. Hopefully these guys realize their response was atrocious, and work on both their communication, and whatever issues OP found in their beer.

Thanks OP for the heads up as these guys hit my radar as I was visiting NE Ohio over the holidays. I think I'll skip a visit when there are quite a few other spots worthy of my time and beer money in the Cleveland area.

Lol, there is a Forest City Brewing in Connecticut, too. Not sure which brewery was around first, but you'd think that more research would be done to prevent this. Not just for the protecting the trade name, but also so some place that may have a bad reputation doesn't bring yours down.

But it's part of the court record that PROVES their tinfoil conspiracy that anyone giving them negative reviews is working along with the ex-brewer to defame them!
