So the other day I happened to be in Portland and realized I was pretty close to a very popular Brewery. I looked them up and realized that they were doing a release.Good enough, I wanted to try their stuff, so I pulled off the exit and around the corner. Easily 100 people in line, people running through the parking lot to get in line, and more cars coming. No way. Thanks. See you later. I've got plenty of good beer in my fridge, I have plenty of access to good beer, and I'm sure their beer is excellent, but I just don't get the hype. And I won't participate in it. I have self restraint. In twenty plus years of dedicated beer drinking I have run the gamut from nasty cheap beer, to really good beer. But I've never waited behind more than three people to get it, with the exception of concerts etc.
Now, the one thing I can't figure out is the standard answer..." Dude you have to have these IPA's fresh"....
I wonder how many people standing in that line or any beer line realize that IPA's spent weeks at sea in warm climates, in barrels, before reaching their intended market...

I wonder how many of those standing in line would drain pour one of those original IPAs then post about it.

I personally choose to wait in line for beer sometimes. I also don't mind that people think that its crazy. I have met a ton of great people and had awesome times in line. I have had a great time standing in poor weather chatting with the guy in front of me while waiting in a beer line as well as lines that turn into awesome bottle shares.

Everybody can do what they want and if they want to spend time hanging out in a beer line then great, maybe I'll see you.

Where did I lose you? Maybe I can clarify. Sorry about the twenty seconds of your life wasted reading this. I can keep typing so you can round it up to a full minute if you'd like.

If people get this fired up over others waiting in line, maybe the line folks aren't the problem....

To sum up: I don't care if you bought it at a gas station, camped out two nights, or traded your cellar for it: drink the beer you want and can get.

I have a hard time waiting in line for beer locally. I would wait for beer if I'm traveling because I'm there and how often am I there again. For example, I waited in line at Aslin this past week. I don't remember the last time I waited in a real line (more than a few minute wait) before that.

True but they also would have had a very different flavor profile than they had when the barrels were filled. :-)

The nice thing about SE PA is that I haven't waited in any line for any beer.

I'd say that what motivates folks to something akin to FOMO. My problem is not FOMO it is too many choices so it some times takes me more time to decide what to choose than it takes to buy it. :sunglasses:

I should have added that I would wait if I was traveling, but not locally.

I mean honestly those beers probably weren't very good by modern standards. Quite possibly they were awful. And either way, they have little in common with what we now know as "IPA".
