We visited Rome during Christmas and found it a really nice city for beer.

    Some bars:
Ma Che Siete Venuti a Fà (Via Benedetta 25) is a wonderful bar with 10-ish all great taps and 30-50 bottles. Our favorite in Rome.
Bir&Fud (same owners across the street Via Benedetta 23) more taps and food as well (as the name indicates).
Brasserie 4:20 (Via Portuense 82) burgers and a nice selection of beers, including some vintage bottles.
Luppolo Station (Via G. Parini n°4) nice food, nice beer, nice place.
Open Baladin (Via degli Specchi 6) is a nice modern craft beer bar with 30+ taps and quite a few bottles.
BrewDog (near Colosseum) is your typical Brewdog-bar.

    And shops:
Les Vignerons (Via Goffredo Mameli 61) great shop with Italian & Belgian sours and more
Domus Birrae (Via Cavour 88) is an OK shop with mainly Italian micros
Johnny’s Off License (two locations: Via Veio 4, via dei Balestrari 9) ditto

Agreed on all above, but I'll add Bagueterria del Fico and No.au near the Piazza Navona.

For this place alone I would recommend staying in Trastevere as close to it as possible. Nice place to wind up each night.

Can definitely recommend Ma Che Siete Venuti a Fà. They have a great tap list and a great bottle list, which includes Cantillon on tap and in bottles.

Thanks for the leg work fellas, I was wondering about Rome's best spots to drink. Think this covers it.

Just happen to be staying in this neighborhood. Perfect!!

I'm leaving next Monday for Amsterdam, Ill be in Rome April 7th-12th, finishing up with 4 days in Brussels. Ill be sure to write when I'm back.

Some others friends just happen to be in Rome same time as I am, they wanted to meet at Ma Che Siete Venuti a Fà for beers before dinner, so this place must be pretty well known.

Cool - I look forward to your notes. Been to Amsterdam and Brussels before - both are an absolute blast, including craft beer stuff. Rome is new to me but seems super promising.

Rome was a blast, much better beer than I expected. The Trastevere was the perfect place to stay. Lots of good restaurants and walking distance to Ma Che Siete and their great tap list, with local Roman beers and Cantillon on tap and in bottles, Nerd choice was my fav Roman beer on tap from Ritual Lab brewing. It may look small but is rather large, with a back room and downstairs area. Bir and Fud had great pizza and a large selection of beer. My wife drank plenty of For Fan there, an apricot sour from LoverBeer of Italy. Highly recommend eating at the Prosciutteria Trastevere and Taverna Trilussa nearby.

Open Baladin had a large selection of their beers from many different styles. I took advantage of Kriek 100% Lambic Bio a few times there.

Johnnys off License had a nice wall of cold beer, if you want one to go on the way to the pantheon or trevi fountain, the Via dei Balestrari location. Owner invited me to a local roman brewery beer tasting later that night. Cool dude. Stop by Osteria de fortunata, get the carbonara! Watch grandma make the pasta by hand.

Domus Birrae had a cold beer selection, you can drink there or take it to go.

Be.Re was great stop for a pint after the Vatican, saw the bar tender drinking at ma che siete later. Was told the same guy owns like all the good beer spots. Be.Re had Cantillon bottles and on tap. At least a dozen taps plus they had meat ball pocket/slider looking things. Smelled good.

Brewdog is by the coliseum. Wish I had time to get to brassiere 4:20 and luppolo station, they looked promising. You'll have a great time. Enjoy!

Great write up – THANK YOU! I’m staying with my family in Trastevere next month and your info is invaluable. Ma Che, Bir & Fud, Open Baladin, Brew Dog & Be.Re are all on my to-do list … need to consider Johnnys Off License.

You mentioned Be.Re has Cantillon bottles (as well as Ma Che) … do they sell those “to-go” at all? Do you remember how much for Loon bottles? Would be cool to bring a stash back to the Airbnb.

As a side note ... how was the pick-pocket and taxi scam situations??? Been reading a ton about how Rome has crazy many pick-pockets - even little children getting in on the pick-pocket action. Also supposedly a ton of crooked taxi drivers overcharging and stuff - wish you could use Uber (I guess it's been banned in Rome).

Glad to see this thread got revived, and thanks for the update JoeyStats707. I'll be returning next spring so I'll hit all of the places I missed, and look for grandma at the Osteria da Fortunata!

In response to AlexM regarding the pick pockets and scams, that goes on everywhere! (although I will agree that maybe there are more gypsies in Roma; and I have never had a taxi scam even suggested in the UK or Germany). The number one thing to do, besides keeping your wallet close to your chest and under cover, is to be prepared ~ and to not be nice!

    • Ask the taxi driver what it will cost first. Don't be afraid to say no and turn around to go. (I actually do this all of the time anyway as a form of haggling). If you agree and then when you get there they want more, give them the money you agreed to and tell them to F-off and get out and walk away. IF, however, they take you to someplace that does not seem right, do not get out and demand loudly that they take you to your proper destination.
    • If some asshole in a store asks you for more than you thought it would be and says it's "tax" tell him to F-off and walk out. Don't be afraid to use hand gestures and scream "Questo negozio è un mezzo di merda!"
    • Avoid eye contact with beggars, or anyone unusual, and ignore them if they speak to you.
    • Do not stop to give directions or help anyone. Do not give anyone the time of day.
    • And if you see those gypsy children anywhere near you do not look at them and move quickly away. If they follow you or you cannot get away, do not let them get close. Yell at them at the top of your voice as if you were possessed "ladri", "cani sporci", and "merda delle strade" before they get around you, always moving away towards people ------ the best defense is to be aware and not get anywhere near them.

You're welcome! Get reservations for Taverna Trilussa one night, you wont regret it (our airbnb host told us this). The ravioli are award winning. Johnnys is the closest place for solid to go beer in bottles. Although you can get plastic cups to go at ma che siete, if you just want to enjoy a neighborhood stroll with a tasty pint. We'd stop by on our way to trevi fountain and pantheon nightly, you can actually get good pics after dark, trevi is too packed during the day. At night, many people gather down the block from ma che to hang out and someone usually comes to play music.

I didnt ask if loons were to go at Be.Re but they were on premise for both, at Ma Che Siete I bought an LPF for $30 to share there.

I was warned about gypsies by numerous people but didnt experience anything like that at all, I had to ask my wife to point out who the gypsies were. I walked at least 60 miles in Rome over 5 days, we never took a Taxi unless we went to the the airport. Vatican is the deepest place to walk from that hood, 30 minutes along the river. The history and beer stuff is all walk able from the Trastevere.

All you need is google maps and to star every cool thing you want to see, you'll get around easily. Just bring plenty of extra socks to change once daily. Its a gorgeous city, we found many amazing beautiful basilica's walking everywhere, lots of crazy cool art. I was told the pick pocket stuff is mostly on public transport, so we avoided it.

The only issue I had with Rome was the constant harassment by guys trying to sell you stuff at the various historical sights, things like selfie sticks, kids toys, or Polaroids in front of famous places. Do not take flowers from any of those guys, unless you wanna spend like $3 euro each. They'll literally grab your girls wrist tie cloth bracelets around it and expect money. I saw it happen to a few tourists. They'll walk up and bug you as you're having an engaging talk with friends and ask if you're from Africa and wont stop pestering you, trust me, dont be polite. Its a waste of time. I tried that the first few days. Just completely ignore or tell them to go away. Otherwise you'll be hounded by folks selling stuff, wasting precious time to enjoy the beautiful sights. Dont hold up paper maps, its a sign you're not from here, red flag to pick pocket. Just use your phone for maps, that way you blend in more from the tourists.

Gotcha - thank you! Yeah, I've traveled all over as well and definitely you need to be firm, assertive, "mean/rude" and "head on a swivel" in certain circumstances / places. Those gypsy children sound insane .... nice talk I'll have to my kids - be mean to anyone that approaches you, LOL

So you opt for the hanging money pouch thingy around your neck rather than the money belt??? I've never used a money belt in my travels, but will do this time since I'm traveling with my family - definitely prefer the hanging around your neck option than a belt.

Awesome info - thank you again ... adding Taverna Trilussa to our food list and for sure Johnny's as it's right across the river from where we are staying. Yes, got my Google Maps and pins ... have downloaded it for offline use as well. Extra socks - great idea! I saw that scam on YouTube ... tie a bracelet around your wrist and demand payment ... definitely will be telling the kids not to engage anyone that approaches them ... I have two kids, so wife will look after one and I will look after the other.
