Well, it was a scotch ale aged in scotch barrels. It's hard to imagine that the nose was mute, because it was very complex when I had it out of the bottle. Did you have it cold on draft? Coldness tends to reduce a beer's aroma. I loved that it was a peat bomb, so say what you will.

Yeah I'm not sure; it was room temperature, maybe a little cooler, on draft. It's possible that my palette was wrecked. I'm willing to give it another shot, as I love Silver City's barrel aged offerings, I just wasn't impressed with it at the time.

Silver City is releasing four BA brews on Thursday, three of which are porter/stouts:

STRANGELOVE: BOURBON BARREL-AGED IMPERIAL MOCHA PORTER
MOTOR BOATER: BOURBON BARREL-AGED IMPERIAL OATMEAL PORTER
TIME GODDESS: BOURBON BARREL-AGED RASPBERRY IMPERIAL STOUT

Definitely will be looking out for these, provided they make it out to their distribution footprint.

Double Mountain's Bourbon Barrel Chaos is on tap at Beveridge Place. I'm sipping it right now. As BBA stouts go, it's unusually smooth, even subtle, and quite interesting. Highly recommended, if you like beers that don't smack you upside the head with a two by four.

This is my first posting on this site, but reading the posts has given me a lot of good options for new stouts to try.

I recently got a bottle of Feather Weather at Costco. Not bad, a little sweet, but a nice change of pace.

For another change of pace, I had No Li's Oyster Stout a month or so ago. If you like their Wrecking Ball, you might like this one, too. A little briney aftertaste, but satisfying. I think it was a seasonal, so it may be all gone now.

My normal go to stouts are Elysian Dragonstooth, No Li Wrecking Ball and Deschutes Obsidian Stout.

Cheers and welcome, Dave, Ivan, or both...? Or neither? (My actual name is neither Edward nor Abbey:slight_smile:)

I'm glad this thread, unusually informative by Northwest standards (we are apt to drift off topic around here, which you will know soon enough if you don't already) has been of use. Kudos to @drone for getting her started, and to all those who have contributed. There's clearly lots to love for lovers of dark beer around there parts, yet another in our litany of blessings...

P.S. Thanks for the tip about No Li's Oyster Stout, but I've got an (ir-)rational fear of shellfish in beer, so I will respectfully continue to pass on that and the other examples of the style. Then again, if you had it a month ago, and haven't succumbed to a fatal bout of food poisoning yet, I *guess* it's probably safe for me to try...

No Li gets the oysters from Taylor Shellfish, so the risk if red tide in your beer is probably remote. Then there's the boiling and other processes in making beer that would kill anything harmful, so I would rate your fear irrational. I like oysters and beer, together or separate, so the idea of oysters in the beer didn't put me off. I would compare the oyster flavor to the level of coconut flavor in Coco Jones porter from Black Raven. Pretty slight. But just to make sure my comparison is rational, I'll now open up a can of Coco to test it out. Not exactly a stout, but quite enjoyable.

I had an Espresso Stout at Laurelwood PDX this afternoon. Damn tasty. A coffee beer for people who like coffee in their coffee beer.

I, a native New Englander, who spent almost all of the first 27 years of my life in that region, am so deliriously happy (and semi-drunk) after the Patriots' utterly improbable and unprecedented Super Bowl comeback victory that I probably wouldn't bat an eye about consuming the rankest shellfish right now, regardless of the format in which it was offered.

Yes, my fear of oyster beers is irrational (and sort of a joke), but henceforth I won't ever feel the need to avoid them. I could die and go to heaven today.

After this post, and your description of the MLS Cup as a "glorious outcome," I regret to inform you that I have moved your name from the "Have Beers With" list to the "Have a single 12-ounce beer and make him pay for it" list.

You, sir, may remove yourself from my lawn posthaste.

Come now...The Red Sox and "Patsies" were so pathetic for so many years (ie, decades) that it is more than a little unkind and even injudicious to fault me for my happiness this evening. It was paid for in so much existential misery for so long, and you, my friend, are too good for such ungenerosity.

Besides, I only ever gloat online. In person, I'm the self-effacing picture of quiet humility. You're definitely still near the top on my "Have Beers With" list, and that beer, whenever it happens, will be on me.

Please do sleep on it and reconsider. I am no devil. Just an especially ebullient angel tonight...

It's not that we hate the Sox and Pats per se, it's just that Boston fans get so obnoxious when their teams win. Even though it came at the expense of my Cards, I was a bit happy when the Sox won their first WS. Then, about a week later, I was ready to start stabbing anybody wearing Sox gear. Boston fans make Yankee fans look rational. Worst fans in sports. And, I'm including those rednecks that were Dale Earnhardt fans. They were drunk, obnoxious, and armed.

Finally got to try this on tap Saturday at Arch Bridge, and damn if that isn't one outstanding BA stout. Tried it side by side with the 2017 Super Nebula, Double Stack and Christmas Bomb, and for my money the Matryoshka was the clear winner. Would have been the best stout I tried all weekend, except that Tin Bucket was pouring Rusty Nail on Friday afternoon.

As a side note... the more often I get to try RN on tap, the more I'm convinced that this is the greatest BA stout to ever come out of the NW. I know that's saying a lot, but I stand by my opinion.

I have better feelings about Double Stack than Matryoshka, almost entirely due to availability. Matryoshka is certainly the best of that bunch of stouts. And yeah, the only PNW stouts that compete with Rusty Nail are other Fremont wonders.

Double Stack is more widely available than Matryoshka? I think I'm misunderstanding your post. Also entirely different beers.

Just wanted to give a shout out to Bale Breaker's Dormancy. Sipping on one now (first time) at copper top (kennewick). Really good - lives up to the description listed on it's review page here on BA - coffee, chocolate, etc. Crossing my fingers this finds it's way to the canning line in the future. It would find a permanent place in my frig. Hey, i didn't think bottom cutter would ever be canned, so there's hope.

Agreed. Recently had it on tap and loved it. Coffee roast and vanilla are really well balanced. Bit thin. Definitely a household staple should it ever hit cans.

Dark Star in a can. I like it! I may have to sneak a couple of those into my golf bag for a cool weather round.

John_M was talking about drinking them at the same time and preferring Matryoshka. I didn't say they were similar. I also didn't say Double Stack was widely available. I only meant DS is almost always available at GN when I go but I've only seen and tried Matryoshka once.
