I understand you feeling annoyed at some random person calling decorah backwards. I chalk this up to the whole "rivalry" between Minnesota and Iowa in general. I'm from Michigan and definitely call every city from Ohio a hell hole.

That being said, If I didn't drink beer from breweries after someone who represented them made a comment that pissed me off, I wouldn't drink Perennial, Surly, Stone to just count a few.

Bad weather has been making top notch beers over the past year and if you're local you should definitely check that place out.

I don't know your experience, but after my tour of Stone I vowed to avoid their beer as much as possible. It's amazing the difference customer interaction can make. My experience at Lagunitas was the polar opposite of Stone and has made me want to buy their beer and support them even more.

To each his own but that is why typically companies place importance on who they hire to represent them. It can and does impact business if your employees aren't being respectful and representing the companies values. I won't step foot in Hammerheart Brewing or buy a single beer from them ever again because of an experience I had picking up a few growlers (ignored for several minutes when it was my turn, then I watched the people who came in after me get assisted immediately, they suddenly stopped wiping glasses and whatever else they were in the middle of and helped the customer). I doubt it will make much difference but I'm local and use to buy several growlers a month and I have told plenty of other people about this poor experience so who knows.

Well of course that's what it was. I enjoy partaking of the time-honored tradition of Minnesota and Iowa squabbling at each other as much as the next guy, but when you're in customer service it's a real bad look to make a statement like that in a serious manner. This employee wasn't joking around, they were being honest in their statement and belief, and given the players involved, showed a level of ignorance of the craft beer scene in this area as a process.

I've come to expect a level of a courteousness and knowledge when interacting with people employed at craft breweries, because overwhelmingly, my experience is that the people there A) are good people who B) know their shit when it comes to beer.

My lone Bad Weather experience entailed someone who was both a bit rude and ignorant of the local beer scene. It left a bad taste in my mouth. The beer didn't blow me away either, but that was well over a year ago. I'm open to trying it again, especially if there's a consensus that it's really good beer. With so many great breweries available these days, it's the little things like this that can really motivate the consumer one way or the other.

If you have long enough arms, you can fry bacon in the nude.

As someone said earlier, the person pouring beer at that festival likely was not an employee of Bad Weather and probably some volunteer that the beer festival found to pour their beers. Countless times I've asked a question at a festival only to be told by the server that they have no relationship with the brewery. This is another reason I like the Rare Beer Festival - the servers are brewers or owners at the brewery.

Yeah, that could very well be. And a good reason to give them a shot.

That surprises me though, because knowing a lot of employees at TG and Pulpit, when their beer is pouring at a festival, there's always an employee (or multiple employees) there pouring and representing the company. I just assumed every small brewery worked that way, but it could be a big assumption on my end.

*opens thread, assuming it will be about Bad Weather. Finds out it's mostly about a server pouring at a festival who may or may not actually work for the brewery.

    I'll let myself out.

To bring the topic back on track somewhat, does anyone know any of Bad Weather's recent offerings on tap? I swung by a month or so ago, and found a chocolate brown ale that was really good.

Last I was there a week ago, they had two new offerings (new to me). The Batch 100 SMASH was ok...it was lacking a little bit of flavor and body for my liking. Muddy Boot is an oatmeal stout on nitro and I enjoyed that quite a bit.

Hey BeerForMyHorses - this is Nathaniel, co-owner of HH. Just saw this comment - wanted to apologize for the experience you had whenever it was. Highly unlikely it was intentional, with the flow of the line, some times it is difficult to know if someone has been helped by another bartender or not, but it happens. Your choices are your choices, but just know that customer service is one of our top priorities. Next time you are in that situation, maybe write the establishment or talk to someone...it is difficult for us to make everything right when we find out about something on BA.

This approach may work in forty-nine other states but we live in the state of introverts staring at their shoes and extroverts staring at your shoes. Kudos to you though for following up on our passive-aggressive methods! :grinning:

I picked up a bottle earlier this week. Very solid beer. Ive been recommending it to the guys at work all week.

I also think it's safe to say that they are not selling the brewery. They have a really good thing going on- easily one of the top two breweries in St. Paul and not far away from being the best. I have a special place in my heart for Summit but I don't think they have ever released a beer as complex as BA Cauld Weather.

Another brewery that seems ready to explode is Wild Mind. That triple IPA of theirs is just too good for a brewery that new. I need to go back.

Were you there? Did they ask me if I had been helped after making eye contact numerous times? No need to write or talk to anyone after an experience like that but thanks for your super helpful suggestion.

We were there a couple days ago (okay, we're probably there weekly). They still have Muddy Boot (stout) on nitro. And they still have the SMASH pale ale, which I think has a nice flavor profile, despite being super light. Hopcromancer IPA is back, and so is Coffee Ominous (coffee infused double brown ale). I haven't had this batch of CO, but I've liked it in the past. Also Cauld Weather (non-BA). And yesterday they tapped a new "Golden IPA", which I haven't tried.

So...you said nothing after nothing was said to you? Not trying to come across as defending either side here but non-verbal communication doesn't always work both ways. If it did, I can't even begin to tell you how many times I've found my soulmate when we locked eyes and she smiled at me. :sunglasses:

You're well within your right to not patronize if you felt you were wronged and I don't doubt you had a bad experience. All he was asking for is for you to say something so they recognize you had an issue and they can work towards fixing it. Seems pretty reasonable to me that he reached out to you to try and rectify it even though you chose to air your complaint on an internet message board in a thread titled about a different brewery. I wouldn't expect a lot of sympathy for your side if you can't do the same.

I can understand your annoyance BFMH, as I hate that sort of treatment as well (when it happens to me and some of my friends, we try to laugh it off by saying "hey, I have super powers. Look, I'm invisible!"). However, funny or not, I don't think anyone likes to be treated that way. That being said, I've been on the other side of the counter as well (worked at a wine store in Memphis for years), and sometimes when the store would get really, really busy, let's just say sometimes "shit happens." However, there was never a time I (or anyone I worked with) intentionally gave bad service to a customer. The folks coming into our store were never people I had any familiarity with, so there would be no reason for me to give especially good or especially bad service to anyone. When it's really crowded, you just want get someone's order checked out as quickly as possible so you can send him or her on their way and take the next customer's order. My point being, that I would tend to believe the co-owner's statement that the poor service you received "likely" wasn't intentional.

That being said, I'm not entirely sure why you were (apparently) angered by the apology and suggestion you received from the co-owner. In my experience, it's become increasingly rare to get any sort of response at all after a bad experience, so I'm always impressed when I see an owner or manager accept responsibility, apologize and make a constructive suggestion on what he feels you can do in the future should you ever have a similar experience.

Of course you can do whatever you want (I'm not trying to talk you into a course of action), and if you decide you're never going to visit the store in question again, I don't think anyone can blame you. Still, it would be my suggestion that you maybe reconsider your response, accept what sounds like a sincere apology from the owner, and hell, maybe even give him a second chance. IMHO, life's too short to hold a permanent grudge over something like this.

Just my two cents. Everything I've heard about Bad Weather is that it's a great beer, and with luck, I'm hoping to get to try it someday (the wife is from the twin cities originally, and we try to get out there periodically to see family and enjoy the fantastic beer scene you guys have out there).
