I like the label art on that one.

Well that answers my question. I don't really think of birch as being a strongly flavored wood but on the other hand, I have no idea what I am basing that opinion on...

Thanks! I really appreciate the advice. Yeah, the over lemony/puckering sour is a bit much for me, it reminds me of a warhead or a jolly rancher, honestly. We get Ithica beers over here, so I'll keep an eye out for that, along with the more traditional German ones.

Thanks @smakawhat for the intro, looks like you are drinking well! I'm taking a couple week reprieve from my favorite style, IPA to give the tastebuds a break. Drinking a pils
Victory Prima Pils, purchased this on 2/8, brought home, put on glasses and found a best by date of 2/6. Lesson learned, never buy beer without glasses. Not going to formally rate it, but even at 6 months old I guess, it's not too bad. Cheers all

I hope I say this right...your review is fantastic....so kinda hard to say it wrong... You are able to unravel this beer so well...I really enjoyed Hive 56 but couldn't really figure out why, nor could I extricate the contributing flavors. This is why we should read reviews, folks, and why NBS is such a great thread.

And I completely agree...you see this one, pick it up.

Long time listener, first time caller.

I know this cuts me off from a lot of great beer, but I have generally avoided buying imports for a long time. For one, I have bad associations of buying what were probably often very old and/or lightstruck beer when I was younger. Then there's the fact that they are often expensive, and that there is already more beer made in my region than I can drink my way through to begin with.

However, I have a friend who's been on a German beer kick, and he's been bringing a lot of it around lately (culminating in a recent German themed dinner where we sampled around 12 regionally appropriate beers). And I have to say I'm coming around a bit. There have been a few with some oxidized (cardboard) flavors, and a few that are more expensive than I'm willing to spend on a regular basis, but there have also been some fantastic beers. The ones that come most immediately to mind are Reissdorf's Kolsch and pretty much everything sour I've tried from Freigeist.

Today I'm trying an Ayinger Jahrhundert Bier, which is apparently a Dortmunder. The only other example of this style I've had is Klara, from Idle Hands Brewing, which is local to me and which I think is delicious. I've previously really enjoyed the Ur-Weisse and the Doppelbock from Ayinger, and I'm aware of their general reputation, so I'm expecting this to be great.

Pours a lovely yellow/honey color with a fair bit of cloudiness, but still letting quite a bit of light through. It's topped with a two inch, frothy, white head that hangs around without much problem and feels perfect on the upper lip. Smell is of crackers, bread, honey, and a little bit of lemon. Taste follows similarly, though less crackery and more lemony, and the beer is a bit richer in the mouthfeel than its appearance might suggest. Finishes clean with just a bit of bitterness around the back sides of the mouth. I do think I'm getting a little bit of cardboard though, so this may not be the freshest bottle (I can't seem to find a date on the bottle).

All in all, another successful foray into the import world. As if I don't already have enough beer in my fridge!

Good afternoon BAs! I've got Marble/Stone/Odell Megawheat collab.
Bottle date is messed up on this copy, but I can at least determin Jan of this year. Smell is dank and I don't even like that word, but I actually think it fits here. Pours relatively clear despite the back of the bottle description as hazy. Head is moderate, but fades to single layer of bubbles after a few minutes. This beer is really different depending on where I move the taste around in my mouth. Front is sweet fade to hop bitterness. Back of tongue is alcohol and fruit. Swish it around and there is complexity.
Maybe my palate isn't good enough, but I would not suspect this to be a wheat beer if it wasn't for the name and the description.
Overall- A good interesting collaboration. A surprise with every sip, all good surprises.

Old school microbrew right here. I love it when Magic Hat brings back their old beers (now only if they would bring back Roxy Rolles & Jinx)

Anyway, I'm quite surprised I haven't had this one before. It's a really solid Irish red ale. Well balanced and flavorful for a style that can sometimes get to be a bit too sweet for my liking

My New Beer for the day is Fille De Ferme by Wicked Weed.

Look: A little Hazy, small head that hangs on for a while. Its a yellow color with a touch of orange. 4
Smell: Brett like funkiness and earthy and some orange citrus 4
Taste: Starts sweet, ends very dry with some prickly carbonation. Get some orange citrus and a light touch of mild brett character and a very pleasant sourness. 4.5
Feel: Light mouthful and very drinkable, dry finish leaves a coating on the tongue. 4.5
Overall: A really well made light brett beer. Very refreshing. 4.5

A fair and accurate rebuttal. However, I still stand by that Pinkus is a wonderful"Munster" style Alt, and unfortunately there is not enough representation, Dusseldorf or the former. On this topic, I would like to add another American and semi-local to me brewery that does a decent homage to the classic Dusseldorf style (if you're ever in the area) being Hanger 24 Altbier. One that I will add to my next Throwback Thursday list . Prost!

    New RIS Sunday

North Coast Old Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout

Happy Sunday, BAs. Thank you to @smakawhat for kicking things off today.

So, I got to try to Sunday Morning Stout "Sex" and "Espresso" variants at Weyerbacher this morning, but I didn't take any pictures, so won't review them here. I purchased entirely too much SMS this weekend, and look forward to passing some of it along in the upcoming NBS BIF. If you're on the fence about joining, I highly encourage you to make the leap.

Anyhow... Old Rasputin is one of those beers that stared at me from the shelves for years, but that I never managed to pull the trigger on. Strange, because for a while, Red Seal was one of my favorites. Wish I had one of the proper gold-rimmed Old Raspy glasses to enjoy it from, but my trusty teku will have to do.

It pours a pretty-solid black color with a giant three-plus fingers of lasting tan foam that leave heavy webbed lacing.

Nutty, lightly-roasted malts, chocolate and a little coffee stand out in the aroma. These continue to the taste where they mix with a stronger, more charred-malt flavor, some pretty strong hop bitterness, a slight vegetal flavor and a kiss of alcohol on the backend.

It's medium-to-heavy bodied with strong carbonation in play in the mouthfeel.

To me, this is a beer that would have seemed world-class fifteen years ago. The vegetal note and the note-quite-perfect carbonation level knock it a bit in my scoring, but I really appreciate the charred, bitter qualities in this one and can definitely see why it's beloved.

This one was packaged on 12142016, so it's fresher than a lot of IPAs I get around here. May add a few to the cellar next time I'm at the store. I imagine this could age pretty nicely, especially if the hops behave.

Hope you all enjoy what's left of your weekends. And that you sign up for that BIF.

    On to the next brew..

    Growler Kolsch | Escutcheon Brewing

[IMG]Escutcheon Brewing Co. - Grolwer Kolsch by imbibehour, on Flickr

Poured from the can into a stange glass. Canned Dec 2nd 2016.

Real nice looking Kolsch, with dark 24 carat gold body color, and a bit of cloudiness to it also. Lost of vibrant but not excessive carbonation that is very fine. Soapy bright white head of three fingers with good staying power surprisingly. Light bubbly cling with pill like lacing and soapy collar to match. Really dig this appearance.

Very neutral and simple nose. Aroma hits towards a light white bread and honey. Faint hints of herbal spice hop character as well, but for the most part pretty quiet with some nice character.

Palate is pretty decent. A bit of a hint of syrup and honey like flavors in the malt and feel going on here. Sweet malt and honey tones, with a bit of bread like flavor. Aftertaste hits real nicely with some crust and bakery warmth that lingers. Sweetness is luckily very dialed down on this but there's a very sticky tone that manages to linger. Quite dense but without the chewy texture either.

Some real good Kolsch character in here, minus some classic fruity tones, but a thick mild sweetness takes a bit too much away from the excellent bready palate.

    look: 4.5 | smell: 3.75 | taste: 3.75 | feel: 3.75 | overall: 3.75 | BA Generated: 3.8

Happy New American Strong Ale Sunday!

Did a nice hike today, around 42, cloudy, all the snow is basically gone, trail is in way better shape then even yesterday. Suppose to be in the low/mid 50s and sunny most of this week. Having a tasty brew, high ABV, always nice to try whatever they stir up.
