Hands down worst service I've ever had at an eating or drinking establishment. Avoid at all costs.

Hey! it's like Homecoming week! haven't seen you around much lately either.

And, it wasn't the worst service I've ever had, but it wasn't 5th or 6th either. I had the feeling that he was trying for the "surly, but friendly" schtick, to kinda fit in with the "Rogue Nation" theme, but he came across as a total asshole.

Which, coming from me, really says a lot.

I've been there many times and although never had anyone rude, certainly had some pretty awful overall service there. The again on the Oregon Coast (heck even in Portland) the customer service is generally bad. Still at the brewery the kids love the mac and cheese served on a frisbee and the regular food is still pretty decent. Beer is just fine, never amazing but rarely bad either. Rogue gets a bad rep, but they brew decent beer overall in my opinion and even some great stuff from time to time.

My favourite is trying to buy something from the store downstairs, the people working there are so confused when you try and buy something in the store they set up but rarely have someone watching. I remember one time asking them about some vintage barleywine they had on their website store and they looked at me like I was from outer space. They also have top notch sodas.

Also maybe 45 min walk back to South Beach campground so makes for a perfect stroll to and from. If you have kids, the aquarium is close entertainment as well and there's a tonne of shitty shops nearby that aren't worth your time. Good luck figuring out the bathrooms at the brewery though!

Agree with some of your comments, but am a bit puzzled by some of the others. You find customer service on the coast and in Portland to be generally bad? That surprises me. Sure, I've had some poor service on occasion in PDX and on the coast, but it's never been widespread. When I'm on the coast, I guess it's obvious I'm a "tourist," and so there's sometimes a slightly condescending tone to the customer service I receive (which frankly, doesn't bother me). I used to go to the Beachcomber pub in Florence from time to time, and while service there could sometimes be a bit slow, no one was ever rude or unpleasant. Same with my experience at the original Pelican pub. If customer service was bad all the time, I'm guessing most folks (including myself) would stop visiting any restaurants or pubs while traveling along the coast. In PDX, there's really only one place I've been to where I repeatedly receive poor or indifferent service, and my impression is that the owner simply doesn't care how people perceive them. So naturally I go elsewhere. Most places that I tend to visit in town (Concordia alehouse, Great Notion, HOTD, Growler Guys, NWIPA, Tin Bucket, Roscoe's, Belmont Station, the Horse Brass, etc.), I typically encounter friendly and quick service. Maybe I've just been lucky and you've been unlucky? Even so, I'm surprised to hear you say that customer service on the coast and in Portland is GENERALLY pretty bad.

Your comments about Rogue I completely agree with. It took several visits to figure out the bathroom situation there, and my understanding is that you need to tell someone in the restaurant upstairs that you'd like to buy something from the store. Most of the time, it seems like there's no one there manning the store on a full time basis, which is surprising, as it seems like there are always a number of folks wanting to pick up some Rogue Nation schwag. The first time I visited (this was MANY years ago), I wanted to buy some bombers to go, and ended up standing around for roughly 10 or 15 minutes waiting for someone to come to the cash register (to take my order). I would add that I also learned pretty quickly that the online store beer selection is rarely updated, so there's generally no correlation between what's actually in the store and what the website says. Can't remember what I was looking for one time, but the employee I spoke to indicated that the beer I saw as available online had been sold out for several months. I confess I've long since stopped even looking at what's supposedly available at the online store (but then again, my visits to Rogue have been become pretty rare as well).

Yup overall compared to lots of places, the service is fairly poor. I think Seinfeld referred to it as "hipster service" on his Comedians in Cars show, specifically in Portland where you get this all the time (one time we waited 30 mins for a place to make 4 smoothies). Obviously not every place is bad, but in general yeah the service is poor compared to many other states, cities and destinations. Not rude, but rarely good service either. I've been visiting there regularly for 30 years and I've always found it slower for sure, sometimes overly pretentious and sometimes overly coastal. I still go though, love the rest of it, the food, the beer and the coast and I've just come to expect that most of the service is slow and meh. I mean some places won't even answer there phone or open up on time.

I tend to agree with this. Brooklyn is very similar. I feel out of place (unwanted?) every time I'm in Portland, but the beer is cheap and and you can find top notch beer just about anywhere so the surly service is fine with me.

Portland and the Coast have a different vibe than a lot of places, kind of laid back, local and personal. If you attempt to make small talk or a personal connection, I find NW Oregon folks to be quite friendly. If you just want to order something quickly and expect them to bend over backwards to satisfy you, good luck. Reminds me of small town people in the South.

I know it doesn't help the OP, since he was looking for northern Oregon coast, but I was quite impressed with Yachats Brewing both beer and service wise. I am actually sipping a beer now out of my YB pint glass. Side story, I wanted to buy a pint glass, but they were out. I said I'll buy the one I am drinking. Response, I like how you roll.

    Lincoln City:
    • Liquor Outlet in Lincoln City - best bottle selection, I think they still have growlers too
    Newport/Depot Bay
    • Bier One in Newport - I think it's been mentioned already, sometimes have rare and unique bottles and taps
    • Newport Fred Meyer - Just general decent bottle selection
    • South Beach Fish Market & Grocery - Good for bottles in a pinch, great fish & chip dive
    • La Maison - Croissants, it's all about the croissants
    • Chowder Bowl - Best clam chowder dive on the coast

:-) Now you have my attention. The wife and I both like Tidal Raves in Depoe bay, but there is nothing I like better than a good dive bar, and if they have "chowda" on top of that, I'm all in.

Food is great, but the view is what makes the wife and I come back to tidal raves. Eat, drink, and watch the the whales frolic. Tough to beat.

I see The Horn brewpub has at last opened in Depoe Bay..in the old Spouting Horn Restaurant building.
    Anyone had the beer yet?

Depoe Bay isn't exactly "North Coast". If you want some really good seafood in a casual, affordable place, I recommend Pacific Oyster Co. in Bay City (between Tillamook and Garibaldi). It's a fish market where they also serve food (the Fish Peddler), and the food is really good. Not fancy, but tasty. I don't remember if they sell beer...

Wife and I liked the beer at Buoy up in Astoria. Smallish place but decent beer.

How far south should I go? I'll have about three days. Thinking of staying one night in Astoria, one in Tillamook, and one in Pacific City, and hopefully see points in between. Sound okay?

Any suggestions for reasonably priced lodgings?

Personally, I wouldn't stay in Tillamook. Just head to Pac City after a day (or a few hours) in Tillamook. It's only about 30 minutes away. If you don't want to go that far, try Netarts or Oceanside (10-15 minutes away). I've always found AirBnB/VRBO to be the best bet on the coast.

Frankly, unless @Rhisa09 is made of money, I wouldn't recommend staying in Pacific City either. Lincoln City is just down the road a piece from Pacific City, and has a much more extensive array of hotel options (some good, some not so good, but most considerably cheaper than what one can find in Pacific City).
