    More like WRONG STROKES!

Sorry, I know I'm trolling now. I really have to make it up to Ram at some point to see where I stand on Shaun's IPAs.

I will say I'm super surprised this many people not in to NE IPAs are in this thread?

To be clear, I'm super into them. My personal FOMO for a Chicago released NE IPA is a bit over the top. I'd almost call it a fetish. And while I've not had hardly any Trillium, I've had quite a bit of TH and Alchemist and pretty much think they walk on water.

I just also understand that a lot of people don't prefer that style of IPA.

So 200,000+ HIGHER ratings of a beer vs 2,500 doesn't mean it's clear cut favored by a majority? Are you kidding me?

Let Galaxy Bowl float around the country the way Julius has and watch the rating plummet.

I totally understand if people don't enjoy that style of IPA, but we're in that style of IPA thread.

I don't enjoy red ales and would rather drink a Coors Light than the best red ale on the planet but you don't see me heading over to the red ale thread and telling them that.

The point is not that it's not preferred by a majority, the point is that a lot of people liking it doesn't make it objectively better. It also doesn't it make it better for an individual. Think about pop music, it is considered a very popular form of music, does that make it objectively better than other types of music? No. Does that mean it can be someone's favorite of music and someone else can also prefer a different type? Yes.

The NE IPA in Chicago is in its infancy. We are in what, month 4-6 of brewing this style here? After attending Fobab for the past 7 some years, I can say it usually takes brewers about 3 years to get the a BA stout down before I can recommend it whether established or new brewers. It takes time playing around and experimenting. The East Coast has largely been a beer desert so anyone apprenticing at those NE IPA factories can easily go start a new brewery out there and perpetuate the style with the knowledge they have acquired. None of those people are leaving and coming to a mature, established market like Chicago which is why we aren't getting the folks with NE IPA brewing skills. Our people are having to learn on their own so given my earlier BA stout info, isn't it reasonable to expect it to take about 3 years before we are perfecting the style and swinging with the East Coast heavy hitters on the style?

I dunno, I come to BA to discuss shit, so I'll sometimes hop (haha, beer pun!) into threads I don't have any pressing interest in, just to chat. It's interesting to hear different perspectives on beer.
If we're talking GB batch 1, I think its big issue would be people drinking it later than 2 weeks in.

The second batch though, yeah, I wouldn't necessarily send that one out East.

I also think things are getting a little lost in translation here--I think most of the people in the thread enjoy NE IPAs; it's just that not everyone in the thread actively loves them.
I have to say, while most people would not describe me as a hipster, I'm pretty hipstery when it comes to my own tastes. I tend to say "oh, 99% of people liked this burger, beer, song, etc. over the one I prefer? Well, I guess the vast majority of people don't have taste." Basically what I'm saying is that I take all rankings with a large grain of salt (basically a salt lick). I use ratings as a way to inform my purchases, since there's no way I could drink everything in the country myself.

Regardless of taste, I don't think there's any need for people to get up in arms here; it's not like preferring Local Hero to Julius (or vice versa) is going to negatively impact someone else's enjoyment of either one.

Dude, he specifically said that doesn't mean it's preferred by the majority.

And those ratings show that it is objectively a more preferred beer than Local Hero.

But if it's a Local Hero, wouldn't it be preferred locally?

Anyone making it up to Noon Whistle today (or Narrow Gauge according to some people haha) for the Gummy Vortex variants? Excited to try the pineapple.

    @Kraj30 and @ratwheels

    A couple thoughts if I may ...
    1. There is no rule that you have to be a TH fanboi to participate in this thread. If you're interested in the topic at hand then you're welcome to participate. @croush is self admittedly not a huge fan of the NE style IPA - but he regularly tries them - both local options and from the big NE breweries. I personally have traded with him se he could try various local NE style IPAs. He's appreciating a variation on a style he actively likes - thats great. Its not like he's trolling people here basking the style and has no basis on which to make his statements, he's just offering his opinion. (one I personally don't share as I really don't care much for anti-hero - but its a valid opinion)
    2. Plenty of people don't like the NE style IPA - seriously, go peruse the general beer talk forum. I swear this is at least one new thread a week asking some variation of "whats the deal with the NE style IPA?, is it even really beer?, is it just a passing fad? why can't hipsters handle bitterness in their beer??" Someone also always makes the argument that the NE style IPA is inherently faulty since it doesn't conform to the guidelines for the IPA style. (not saying I agree, but just that even here on BA there are plenty of people who would take a SNPA over any NE style IPA anyday.
    3. Finally, keep in mind that this thread is for discussing Chicagoland NE style IPAs so, yea, lets not chat about chile stouts here, but TH, Trillium, etc also aren't Chicagoland NE style IPAs... I get it, they are tangentially related since its what the Chicago brewers doing this style are trying to emulate to some degree, but lets stop acting like discussing a comparison to any other IPA is what is off topic. Most of us don't have a regular access to the east coast NE style IPAs like you do @Kraj30 and we don't really want to trade all the time for them. So we're just happy to enjoy the options here in Chicago.
Most people here are here because they really enjoy the style - but even in enjoying the style tastes are so very different. The gist of this thread has always been to discuss a shared interest, not to bash anyones tastes.

Ratings on Untappd are the absolute worst.

*Person drinks beer #1* "OMFG THIS IS THE BEST BEER EVARRRR #JUICEBOMB #WHALEZBRO"

*Same person has beer #2* "OMFG THIS IS THE BEST BEER EVARRRR #JUICEBOMB #WHALEZBRO"

(is drinking literally any beer with "juice" in the title)
