    evening all

Just back from a quick visit to Bamberg so I thought i'd share what I found this time out. Managed to persuade the mrs to have a lovely romantic few days away (she doesn't like beer) and with return flights on a relatively new route from Manchester to Nurnberg it was a no brainer.

anyway, we arrived around 9pm so decided to spend the night in Nurnberg, ive passed through before but not spent a great deal of time there so it was nice to have a mooch about, we called at bratwurst roslein for some little sausages and some zirndorfer kellerbier

after that we just had time to walk up the road to nurnberger alm where I had a couple of really nice "house schwarzebier" ive heard a rumour that this maybe from a brewery in forchheim, can anyone confirm or deny that?

Bamberg was just as good as last time I went although I did miss being able to sit out in the kellers, we stayed at the alt ringlein hotel, it was really nice but not sure id fancy it in the height of the summer when everyones drinking outside, I reckon it'll be pretty noisy, this was our view

Even though the mrs is not a beer drinker we managed to visit all the Bamberg breweries (good job most of them sell wine too) I was happy to visit greifenklau as that's the only one i'd not visited previously.

Beery highlights included the spezial lager, keesman weizen, mahrs u and the schlenkerla marzen (and the gulasch!) sad to say but I did have a not so great beer this time around, the klosterbrau braunbier, to use a BA term, it was a bit of a diacetyl bomb.

Thanks for the report. Man...sad that Klosterbrau is still having issues. Last time I was there the Bock was pretty diacetyl-heavy. Braunbier was spot-on, though. Ringlein is a nice hotel, but certainly in the center of the Sandstrasse action. How'd you like Greifenklau? Have the Greif-R Rauchbier?

Yeah last time I was there I thought the braunbier was good but sadly not this time. I really liked Greifenklau actually, was nice to have a brisk walk up the hill to be rewarded with beer, I just had their lagerbier, wasn't even aware they made a rauchbier! I found it really cosy and welcoming inside, we got talking to a few locals who taught us a new card game, schnautz I believe it was called, great fun

oh and I forgot to mention, the one place I wanted to visit was weinstube pizzini, unfortunately as we got outside we could hear there was a pretty loud band on (sounded right up my street to be honest) but the mrs wasn't too keen as she was hoping for a quiet sit down, we ended up at weinstube ruckel instead which was a really nice boozer as it happens and they have huppendorfer vollbier. On a non beery note we visited the naturkunde museum which is definitely worth an hour of anyones time

For a brief time, my buddy and I lived right up the street and Greifenklau was our local. Given that the coal ovens in the apartment didn't work with a damn, we spent a lot of time in the tavern in winter. I think the Lager has gotten a touch cleaner/less rustic (for better or worse) since the Junior brewer took over. Food always solid, too. Rauch was a pleasant surprise when I had it.

Was the flight delayed? I'm hopping over on same route for Bier Tag in April and we are contemplating taxi transfer to Bamberg primarily to save time and get into the pub faster but need to check transfer prices compared to the cheap train travel option.

flight was just about on time but then getting through the airport, u bahn into town, walking to the hotel, checking in etc meant we didnt get out while about 9. taxi straight from the airport to bamberg you could probably be in bamberg by that time, probably pricey though

Huh, what? I don't get it..
With public transport, it takes less than an hour upt o 1.5 hours to get frem nbg airport to Bamberg bahnhof.... runs regularly and is cheap. And runs, even during weekdays, well after 10pm. I don't see the issue, am I missing something?

Just curious - anyone made it to the Kronprinz/Erlkoenig? I'm hoping to be back in Bavaria this August and wondered if it was worth my time or if it's a complete disaster.

The taxi idea. To stay one night in Nürnberg - why not, it's a nice place with decent pubs, plus, after a long travel already, why not:wink:.

yeah thats what we thought, didnt want the hassle of late night travel so stayed in nurnberg. i can sort of see where dodger75 is coming from with the taxi idea, if that particular flight is on time then using the train straight bamberg, looking at db i reckon you could expect to arrive in bamberg around 22.30, then theres the walk from the station. getting a taxi straight from nurnberg airport though i think you could probably be in a pub in bamberg for 21.30 and get a few beers in. i have no idea what the cost would be though. i guess it depends how desperate you are for a beer in bamberg that night!

Right. I would be satisfied with buying 2 bottles of Zirndorfer Landbier or something from Kitzmann at the main station in NBG and drinking them during the train journey. Plus, from the station to Fässla or Spezial ist just like, what, maybe 3,4 minutes? But that's just me.

Thanks folks! I'm just desperate to not waste time and we are only there Saturday night, Sunday then home sadly due to the home office having a travel time restriction.

It's potentially worth taking a taxi if you split the fare. If you have extra time, a few hours In Nbg can be worthwhile, but it is not even close to the experience you will get in Bamberg. Maybe take a Taxi to Erlangen from the airport and catch a train from there?

Good call potentially. I've done Bamberg twice and Erlangen last year for the Berg and attending it again in June this year so I like that call. Thanks it hadn't crossed my mind.
