I've blended similarly hopped ipa's and homebrews. ie. Founder's Mosaic Promise and Alpine Hoppy Birthday.

It's ok if you want some variety in your drinking session and you only have two or three beers to choose from, but not quite as exciting as it sounds.

A Dirty Hoe (actual drink name) actually works well though. 8 ounces of Hoegarden or Allagash White and 8 ounces of Lindemans Lambic Framboise.

Haven't tried it myself but I recall back in the early 90's in while living in Salt Lake City a friend used to get a "black and tan", they would pour half a pint with a dark then top it with a lager. So it has been done for decades for sure. Gonna try it soon and see what happens.

Guinness and Bass is THE classic widely recognized Black & Tan blend of beers.

Yeah, I've often advocated for a sarcasm font, but no one listens to me.

The only way I've enjoyed session IPA's is through blending.

I love a session IPA mixed with a stout. Preferably one with some chocolate or vanilla or other flavor. The sweetness of the stout mixes wonderfully with the fruitiness of the hops then has the roastiness... Essentially it is making a Black IPA from a blend... But I've never had a Black IPA nearly as good as the blends I've made.

At my local bar they serve the beers numbered 1-40. I often ask for what I call a "daily special" which is just a blend of the beers of the number of the month and the number of the day.

For instance, today is March 5th (3/5/2017). So it'll be a blend of beers 3 and 5.

I always check what the beers are beforehand so I will not order this if the beers don't sound like they'd complement each other well.

Also our bar for a little while had what we called the "50/50 committee". We created a "secret menu" of whatever beer blends we could think of. Then we would share it amongst ourselves and if it tasted good then it'd get a name and go on the secret menu... Of course the bar has a lot of beer turnover so the list was only valid for approximately a week... And we haven't remade it for about a year... I can't remember any of the other outstanding combinations.

I'm open to being corrected on this one, but I'm pretty sure there's nothing you can add to Steel Reserve to make it a A beer...

Hmmm, I've never heard of Harp as the classic, always Bass. Maybe it depends where you're from.

Yes, 2 names actually, but don't use one of them around actual Irish people unless you want the tar kicked out of you.

In the US, Diageo (whose subsidiary at the time of the ad - 1998 - went by the name "Guinness-Bass Imports") considered the Guinness/Bass combo the "original" Black & Tan - but, obviously, the fact that they imported both brands played a big part in that.

And they called a "half and half (a drink combining Guinness and Harp)" around the same time.

Currently, they are more generic as far as the "other" beers, when selling their branded SPOON:
Go back half a century (before Harp or Guinness Draught existed, or Guinness was importing Bass), they were cool with you mixing it with any beer in 1959 - when only Guinness Foreign Extra Stout was exported to the US:

Go back over a century, and Black & Tan beer existed (long before the UK paramilitary force in Ireland).

As far as "Half &Half" in the US - Well, long before "Harp Lager" or "Guinness Draught", we had a few of them, too....
