After many years on BA, that's apparently the only meaning the word has. Originally, I think it was also supposed to have some sort of pejorative connotation as well (suggesting that there's something wrong or unbalanced about the person making the negative comment or observation), but the word is now so randomly and un-carefully used, that I think that's no longer the case. To be honest, these days I think the use of the word says more about the person using it, then it does the person it's aimed at.

Meh, it was sort of tongue in cheek but hope I didn't offend you. But by using the word "hater", I was reflecting on the fact that anytime APEX is mentioned, everyone comes out of the woodwork to bash everything they do. APEX can do no right for most people on here and frankly I guess I just don't understand why they continue to go? There are quite a few places in PDX that I have voiced my negative opinion on and I simply don't go anymore.

Absolutely no offense taken ... I just don't really understand the general usage of the word. I wouldn't necessarily say that people 'come out of the woodwork', but I do think there are a number of people on this forum that simply don't care for some of their practices and will voice that opinion whenever the topic comes up in relation to places someone should visit while in the area from out of town. As I mentioned, I do not go to APEX anymore for the reasons I've previously stated. That's not going to stop me from informing others of what the place is like. Just like you stated that you voice your negative opinion on numerous places and also don't visit those places anymore. For example, I'm guessing that @walterfredo found some of the negative posts in this forum about APEX helpful, since he states that one of their practices is a deal breaker for him. If not for the negative posts on this thread he likely wouldn't have found out about this until he was actually there.

If you read the entire thread, there was actually some context to the original post about Apex. Someone mentioned what "allegedly" Apex pulled last year with their PtY keg, and there was some indication that they did something similar this year as well. That discussion lead to someone from out of town making a more specific inquiry ("what's wrong with going to Apex for a glass of younger"). Given the question, I thought it entirely reasonable to point out some of the shortcomings other folks (myself included) have noticed about Apex over the years. I wouldn't call that "hating" on a place.

I can't speak for others, but personally, the only time I volunteer specific information about some of the less than stellar experiences I've had at the Apex is if someone specifically asks for examples (otherwise, I suggest they just read my BA review, which I feel points out both the pros and cons of going to the Apex).

IMHO, there have been more than enough "why I hate the Apex" threads, which I assume is the point you're trying to make. So I agree with you there. However, as long as folks unfamiliar with the place are going to ask questions, I think it's completely reasonable for someone to chime in with what they feel are good reasons not to go there.

All that aside, I know there are still a lot of people who like the place (they routinely have one of the best taplists in town I think), which is why I always make the same recommendation that you do (go and decide for yourself).

Cool, thanks for the reply. I can be ornery but prefer not to be and actually appreciate the civility of this particular regional forum compared to others.

I would say to @walterfredo that I really hope he doesn't miss checking out APEX or judge them on the fact that they don't give samples. I can think of quite a few reasons why it makes sense they don't. I actually don't think it's because they just want to be assholes. For my money, there's just nothing like sitting outside on a warm spring or summer day at APEX. I loved it at the time, but having moved to the midwest recently, I'm a more than a bit nostalgic for it right now (not that the weather is cooperating for you guys ).

As someone lukewarm on the place as a whole, I will agree that on a warm spring or summer day it has a great outside seating area and they do consistently have one of the best taplists in town

I will definitely be stopping in at Apex.

Does this belong in here? Does this belong in the Modern Times thread? Does this belong in the yet to be created "bash APEX" thread? FWIW, as a PNWer recently relocated to the Midwest, I'm nothing but jealous about the selection and prices:
