    Hey BA,

My wife has been enjoying darker dubbelbocks and stouts (Optimator, Leffe Brun, Guinness) but lately has been opening up to some of the more premium stuff I bring home. Now, the Guinness and Optimator are too thin/watery for her tastes. Looking for easily accessible stouts for regular consumption - dubbels or porters also ok, she likes dark beers. Perhaps a step up from Guinness but not quite as rich as a Breakfast Stout, for instance.

I'm in NJ, by the way.

IMO the following Porters are very high quality:

    · Founders Porter

    · Deschutes Black Butte Porter

    · Great Lakes Edmund Fitzgerald Porter

Don’t get hung up on the Stout vs. Porter thing. In contemporary times the only real difference is which name the brewery chooses to utilize.

    Cheers!

Head over to a local brewpub and checkout what they have on-tap.

    Cheers!

I'm not sure if you get Ipswich in your area, but their Oatmeal Stout is great

I'm a big fan of ten fidy, but it is a bit pricey at 4/$16. But worth it. Also like Rasputin. High West is awesome but hard to find. Other ones I haven't had, so thanks!!

Anyone have Left Hand Nitro Milk Stout? Looks good.

Carton Unjunct is everywhere right now and is as good of a bog-standard American Stout as you will find. Kane's (seasonal for St. Paddy's) Port Omna, which is their take on Guinness' style, is also set to be regularly available for the next couple weeks for growler fills at the brewery and all over Jersey. Both excellent, fresh, local options in the category, and yet distinctly different from each other.

For the time being, I would skip anything 9% ABV and higher. Stick to a 6 or 7% ballpark instead.

I had Empire's Black Magic Stout at a friend's house over the weekend and thought it was a solid dry Irish stout. Readily available in NJ.

Yup, lots of folks posting about Imperial Stouts but given this is BA that is not too surprising. BAs love BIG beers.

    Cheers!

Ah I didn't read the end of the original post...try Sam Adams Cream Stout. I usually don't like low abv stouts because they're often too thin and bland (for me) but that beer has plenty of body and flavor for the abv. Easy to find too
Also, since you are from NJ, seek out Carton of Milk on tap. Tasty light milk stout at only 4%
