CO Barrel Aged Stouts

Jolly Pirate and Myrcenario were both pretty good. I'm a bigger fan of the straight-up oak notes in their Woodcut line, though. I'll give them credit for never raising the price on it, even if it is still a bit pricey. Back when they launched that line people thought they were nuts for charging $25-30. It isn't cheap, but it's no longer absurd.

I hit up crooked stave about some bad corks that fell into my beer when attempting to open them and got no response.


I've said before about odd13 taking care of me immensely for minor issues. Guess who's beer I buy way more of?

BA Medianoche hitting the spot, no crowlers allowed

 

Here's hoping it lasts the weekend. Was gonna be there today as well, but the stomach bug hit. Fingers crossed for tomorrow.

 

BA Work from Home is pretty good. The barrel is pretty strong. I generally don't advocate for aging, but this one might need a bit to settle down so the other flavors can come out. Body is pretty solid on it.

 

Single Barrel Medianoche is definitely legit. Thought it couldn't get better than the coconut from the last release, but this one takes the cake.

 

I personally liked the regular Work From Home better than the BA version. Like you said though, maybe the BA version needs a little age. Also, tried th Double Maple variant and that was completely over the top with the maple. Straight sugar bomb. I like some maple flavor in my beer but this was a completely different level of sweetness. Didn't even finish a taster of it.

Loved the Single Barrel Medianoche as well. Little hot/boozy right away but as it warmed everything mellowed out and it was damn near perfect.

 

I grabbed a crowler of the regular Work From Home, but haven't actually tried it yet. By the time I got through the double maple, blueberry, BA and then a 4oz of double maple, that was that.
That double maple is definitely a super maple sugar bomb. I liked it a lot, but yeah, diabetics should steer clear.

 

I think I posted somewhere on this thread about that first batch of Medianoche being my favorite CO BA stout to date. Had the pleasure of trying the single barrel version @WW on Friday, and damn is that a tasty beer. Lives up to my expectations in every way with amazing barrel character and a smooth chocolaty finish. Better than any adjunct BA stout they've made imo. Now we'll have to see how this batch of LotLB ages because it was definitely a contender for me, but a little more heat out of the gate.

 

Single Barrel Medianoche was better to me than any previous version I have had. I'm not sure I can qualify why I felt that way, but it sure did impress us.

 

Does it top your CO BA stout list overall? I don't remember if you had a previous take on Medianoche versus the field?

 

Was able to get the last pour of Medianoche at WW today and wow was it good. Not sure if it was the single barrel version or not. I had never had a barrel aged beer from them and I am looking forward to a formal release sometime soon, hopefully with potential for crowlers and/or variants.

BTW, I was the 4th person in the door and it kicked right at 2:00pm. Good thing I left early.

 

Honestly this years BATF and RBATF were phenomenal. Liquid brain was super smooth and balanced with heavy barrel. But single barrel Noche may have had the best flavor of them all. To me it was smoother and more balanced than prior versions. It's difficult to pick a winner.

 

He may come in to comment as well but Neil @Tarheel4985 said that in the future he wants to limit the amount of adjuncts that go into Medianoche. But said he's open to different barrels or even a double-barrel Medianoche. Said his experience at Hunahpuh Day really helped shape his opinion about the beers he wants to make going forward. Someone get this man some Apple Brandy barrels!

It was really need to get the tour/talk from him, learning about their plans moving forward.

 

Thankfully it did last the weekend, and a little bit into Monday. I made it there by open yesterday and got the second to last pour on it, it was amazing. I loved the barrel notes on this beer. Hopefully they brew it again, it was a really good beer.

 

We are still deciding what the Medianoche releases will look like this year, but seeing where this batch is after just 10 months in the barrels, we'll likely be focusing on releasing more of the base beer without adjuncts than we did last year. That's not to say that we won't do any adjunct versions, but we are so happy with where the base beer is that we'd hate to lose that character with too many adjuncts. Also, we will likely package another Single Barrel batch, maybe at 13 months since the one we released last weekend was 10 months, and maybe even a third at 16 months. Who knows?

We already have two different Double Barrel Medianoches aging, one started as bourbon then went into another fresh bourbon barrel after a year, the other started as bourbon and went into a fresh rum barrel after a year. So hopefully we'll have two different DB Medianoches next year.

 

@Tarheel4985 Please tell me you'll release something with coconut in it...

 

We shall see. If not with the current batch of Medianoche, which was aged in bourbon, then maybe with the rum barrel batch later in the year. But no promises...
