What do you call "proper glassware"?

As someone who enjoys glassware, both of the novelty and serious kind, I'm very curious as to what people deem "proper". I've seen many differing opinions, but what do you think? Is glass type to beer style most important? The branding of the glass? General look of the glass? Or don't you give a crap?

The glass should match the style, but it needs the branding to get the "proper" designation.

So what's better, a branded glass of the "wrong" type, or an unbranded glass of the "correct" type?

A solid British Pint glass! (he says with a heavy glottal stop, completely belied by his vast glass collection)

Lately, I've been trying to track down the glasses from the breweries that I drink the most from. But for those that I don't, it's usually a snifter for the high ABV porters and stouts, a flute or tulip for the lighter saisons and sours, and a pint glass or mug for the German styles I occasionally will have.

I try to stick with style within reason. I don't want to buy a glass for every style, or one that i don't drink that often. Therefore, I don't own or plan to buy a thistle, stange, chalice/goblet, etc.

As far as branding, I choose to represent the breweries closer to me that I drink the most of and feel a loyalty to like Tree House & Trillium.

I don't doubt for a minute that glassware suited to a particular beer style enhances the drinking experience. If I have a world-class beer, it's going into a glass worthy of it. For example, my go-to glassware for IPA's/DIPA's is an oversized Riedel stemless wine glass, a Spiegelau IPA glass, or an oversized tulip, in no particular order. I'll usually break out an oversized snifter for a good stout or barleywine. These are what I'd consider "proper" for the styles.

That said, I think it's pretty well documented that I'll drink out of just about anything that will hold liquid. Vases, candle holders, jelly jars, and hobnail milk-glass goblets are all fair game. I like the offbeat and whimsical as well as the classically beautiful. Although I'm not a huge fan of branded glassware (unless it's vintage), I am a huge fan of visual appeal. I think mugs, seidels, and shaker pints demand some sort of embellishment. My glassware collection, which takes up pretty much every available square inch of space in my humble abode, boasts all of the aforementioned.

One thing is for certain: I DO give a crap. Beer should be fun.

I think your glassware track record speaks for itself, my friend! If I could only have one glass, I think the snifter works well for most styles.

Couldn't care less about the "brand". I use tulips and snifters for pretty much everything.

Beer glass to style, branding is secondary for me unless it's Belgian.

Many domestics here use the same glass anyway.. It's fun to have one and a nice thing for a fav brewery but it's not absolutely the be all to end all.

"Proper" is an honorific that, IMO, goes to using the branded glassware within the style of the beer. Doesn't mean it's "improper" to use whatever the hell you want.

I'd choose the "right" type of glass over a branded glass 99 times out of a hundred. That said, I don't obsess over the "right" glass all that much either. Certain glassware can absolutely show off the look and aroma of a style better than others. But I've got no problem drinking from a bottle or can; a shaker pint; a frosted mug; or even a plastic cup, if that's the only option.

I use what Spieglau call on their website the "beer tulip" but which I swear was called the pilsner glass when I bought it a few years ago, and my Hill Farmstead glass, for pretty much anything

My "go-to" glass has definitely become my Willi Becher glass. It's perfect for 16oz cans and a finger or two of foam. I think it also captures the aromas of whatever beer I'm drinking the best.

I probably use the tulip (16oz or 12oz) the second most and I use the snifter or an over-sized wine glass for stouts.

I drink a lot of different styles so I do have pilsner, hefe, nonic, chalice, etc glasses too. As far as branding, I do have some that were either gifts or some I bought while on a vacation but that really isn't important to me.

Snifters and tulips, but the SAPPs are the workhorse of my (mostly in storage) glassware - Cheers!

To me this could go both ways really, but I think you see more people with branded glassware (whether it be correct for the style or not) posting #properglassware.

I drink most everything from a snifter. It gives an even playing field for all beers, at least in my opinion. Kinda like if I wanted to see how well a variety of road cars perform, I'd test them all on the same track that had a section for each attribute (speed straightaway, tight turns, long turn, etc.)

I wouldn't consider matching the branding of your glass to your beer to be proper, that's just doing a good job of matching. Not to say I don't enjoy matching my beer to my glass, but it doesn't make the beer perform any better except in a picture. So if you're going for WBAYDN or Instagram credit, buy more branded glasses and start snapping photos.

A footed, stemmed glass with what is generally called a tulip shape bowl. Substantial enough that if the cat knocks it off my desk the stem doesn't snap in half.

    This is the correct answer.

With everything being being canned 16oz, a sturdy 19/20oz nonic is de rigueur.

Frankly, if I could find an etched glass 5-gallon bucket, I'd go with that. I hate getting my ass up off the sofa for refills.
