I recently tried a Lakefront Maibock and it was excellent, but after a bit of research I'll probably go with Rogue Dead Guy. It's highly rated and easy to get nearly everywhere. Lakefront and Rogue are both available in NY.

Dead Guy is nowhere near what a Maibock should be, folks. Just a heads up.

Dead Guy is definitely a very, let's say, Americanized maibock. Very good beer imo though.

In this context, where we are exploring the style, I think it's important to point out how that beer doesn't really help you get to know it- especially in terms of the malt, hop and yeast profiles and overall feel .

It may be fun to do a compare and contrast, though. Let me see what I can get...

I completely agree - especially for people who may be exploring a style for the first time. You have one "Americanized" version of a German beer and it can completely skew your perspective on the style.

Can you really call Dead Guy "Americanized?" I think it is (and was, from day one) just a big mistake in labeling by the brewery. To me it's closer in character to Fat Tire than any Maibock I've ever tasted. Even the chewy, malt heavy HB Maibock has a clean fermentation quality, unlike Dead Guy.

Footnote: In case no one has checked lately, Rogue doesn't even call Dead Guy a Maibock anymore, they list it as an "Ale," with a caveat:
"An ale inspired by the style of a German Maibock, brewed using our proprietary Pacman yeast..."

So maybe the best way to judge it is to try finding any Maibock qualities... though I never have.

Not that I need an excuse, but this is a great reason to check out Ayinger. I look forward to this, especially everyone's insight.

I was trying to see if Ayinger's maibock is distributed in the US, but Merchant du vin lists it as draft only - have you seen it in bottles?
