Bottled mediocrity? Really? Please explain why you think Pliny the Elder is a mediocre beer.

Here's a counter-point: Hype can be defined as extravagant or intensive publicity or promotion. Someone who repeatedly posts about how Pliny is the greatest beer on the planet, or continually praises the beer with intensity is hyping the beer. You do not have to work for RR, or have a commercial interest in the beer in order to intensively promote Pliny.

Like the origins of all other slang, the colloquial definition of the word has changed through repeated misuse particularly on BA. The denotation may be inaccurate, but the connotation in regards to beer is very clear to most BAs.

People make so many grammatical mistakes online that if this level of criticism were universally applied to all posts, we wouldn't have time to talk about beer. :grinning:

All that OT crap stated, the video is garbage but Pliny is still a great beer.

the problem is that people constantly use the word 'hype' with 2 contrary meanings; 1) continued sincere praise, 2) commercial advertising. they talk about "believing the hype" or "living up to the hype," and criticize beers for being too hyped. that would make sense if they always meant (2), but when they identify concrete examples of hype, the word is normally only applicable in the sense of (1).

this isn't just a semantic issue. it's a critical thought problem.

lol I love how a beer goes from good then to god like hype then crashes down. Someone should write a formula explaining it!

I was completely underwhelmed by Pliny the Elder. Just not my tastes. It was a very balanced, but I like a more assertive hop taste in my IPAs.

    I'll feed him!

Pliny the Elder is a DIPA, not an IPA. Your post is wholly irrelevant.

Do we have any new info about when this documentary is releasing or is everyone still just arguing in here?

I do. I enjoyed Pliny the Elder (though I don't think it to be godly) never had Younger but I love watching stuff about beer and beer culture....so why not?

Pliny is easy to get only a phone call away, but shipping from CA is the killer, by the time your done it's 10 bucks a bottle. Still worth in maybe 2X a year though. I don't get guys ripping it because they found HT to be a religious experience, but PTE is still great stuff. I love HT and it's my favorite DIPA, but it doesn't take away PTE greatness, hell their different brews.

OK, I'll nitpick....not a big fan of bartenders dipping the faucet into the beer, kind of a sanitation issue that should be taught in bartending 101.

I've seen this mentioned frequently, but I can't figure out why this is a sanitation issue. I can't see any particular reason for the outside of a tap to have more germ presence than the inside, which seems like the only plausible explanation. And as long as everything is cleaned right then it really doesn't seem like it should be an issue. So why do so many people say that it is?

It's only an issue if the tap isn't cleaned regularly throughout the day, and if the brewery doesn't do it on used glasses.

I think you misnegated the end there (I can see why doing it with used glasses would be bad), but why is cleaning throughout the day necessary for the outside but not the inside?
