Back From a Long Vacation, Our Hefe Is Happy To Be Home

ST. PAUL, Minn. (March 28, 2017) – Please join us today in welcoming home our old friend Summit Hefeweizen. First introduced in 2002, the classic German wheat beer left our St. Paul brewery in 2011 to visit friends and family in the old country. Worry not, however — since departing the Summit portfolio, this beer has remained the same sessionable and highly carbonated beverage you once knew and loved.

While away, the one-time summer seasonal sunned for a spell on Germany’s Lake Constance with a gang of traditional yet spicy Tettnang hops. It also traveled the countryside with German Pils and Carawheat, a couple of the malts responsible for Hefe’s lightly toasted and breadcrumb background. Summit Hefeweizen even had a little quality time one-on-one with a tremendous German yeast strain; we hear the results were just magical, producing familiar aromas of banana and clove.

But six years is a long time to be away, and it turns out folks back here in the states missed our Hefe — especially during those summer nights at the lake, at the ballpark, and at home by the grill.

“This classical style was first developed by the brewers of Bavaria, Germany, to refresh thirsty beer lovers during hot continental European summers,” says Head Brewer Damian McConn. “It was one of our very first seasonal beers, and with its effervescent, slightly dry finish, beautiful golden haze, and billowing head of foam atop the glass, this is truly one of the most refreshing beer styles available.”

For the first taste, Summit is hosting a Homecoming party this Thursday, March 30, at the Summit Beer Hall — join us to catch up and get reacquainted with your old pal.

Summit Hefeweizen will be available on draft and in 12-oz. cans starting the first week of April. Cans will be sold exclusively inside the Boundary Waters Box, a new variety pack also featuring Summit Wit Bier, Keller Pils, and Summer Ale.

I'm super stoked for this! @summitbeer - how long will the Boundary Waters Box be on shelves for (e.g. April - July)?

sounds about right. why keep summer beers in stock through the actual summer? gotta make room for Oktoberfest in july!

(this isn't necessarily a knock on summit, although they've been known to be about 2-3 months ahead on their seasonal beers, as it is on the 'who can get it out first' mentality of the industry right now)

@summitbeer - thanks for the replay. From a customer's perspective it would be great if you could produce and have this available further into the summer. Say July and August. Sure, I could stock up, but I'd much rather buy fresh Hefe in the heat of summer!

We're making lots of beer. We make it every day. We drink it every day too. It's neat.

Great to have another fresh local hefe available to purchase. From past memory I've found this one to be a bit spicier with the cloves and drier (as they noted) than Schell's version. I prefer Schells Hefe but will definitely be adding this to my summer beer inventory as I love the style particularly in the summer.

I'm looking forward to the Summit Hefe as well and wish I could also buy it as a separate 6 pack in cans.

I really wish Schell's would make their Hefeweizen also available in cans. That would be a great summer beer for boating.

Not to sidetrack the thread, but has Schell's canned anything since Arminius?

I have always been lukewarm with Summit's Hefeweizen it's not horrible but I prefer Schell's Hefeweizen.

Did anyone stop by the Summit Beer Hall last night for the debut?

I did... the hefe is very good.

I'm going to enjoy the 12 pack, although if the hefe and pils were available separately, I'd buy more of those than I will the12 packs... The Summer Ale (Kölsch) is enjoyable (and we'll see about the wit), but it would be farther down on my list.
