Let's say this is true. Why in the hell would FFF tell anyone? I think it's safe to assume they wouldn't say a damn thing. But if they did...

FFF - Oh by the way random local patron the vanilla variant, which we haven't even confirmed is a variant this year, has kinda gone bad and we are just going to make it taste good so no one will know...except for you...

You're right about the adjunct being added later but I'm not sure how much later and how long. I believe they're all slightly different base beers but I now I'm concerned there won't be any safe BBDL either.

The thing that pushes this into bullshit territory is the tag that the remaining bottles are essentially ticking time bombs, leaving those early group A people to wonder if its REALLY worth it.

This is the first I've ever heard of this. My impression is that all of these variants have the same base...Dark Lord. I could be completely wrong, though.

It's how the base beer for Mornin' Delight and KBBS are very similar but not the same. You need to tweak the recipe when aging in barrels and what adjuncts are later added.

Same thing with BAA, it's not just base Abraxas tossed in a barrel then the same spices added.

The way vanilla works in DL compared to other vanilla bean stouts seems so different and unique, it's almost like they do age it with the beans. I wonder how they make it so intense regardless.

Curious to know how you have the inside scoop on all BA whales.

I believe something went wrong this year because they added the *not everyone gets a variant* at the last second. 3 Floyds has had infection issues with previous barrel aged beers. I hope it's not the precious vanilla though. Biggleswad, Temeculan... take em!

What percentage of the people in these threads also send money to that Nigerian prince that emailed them? 50%? Higher?

I'm pretty sure they have one Bourbon barrel with vanilla beans and DL in it and one bourbon barrel with DL in it. I don't think they add the beans after it is out of the barrel or drawing both the BA and vanilla bourbon from the same barrel....one barrel can be infected, doesn't mean they all would be.

FFF isn't releasing VBDL with a known infection if that were the case. In the past they have bought infected beers back at twice the price paid. Don't think they would release something knowingly having to pay twice as much in the long run as just not releasing it. :Let's hope we are in a Vanilla Rye scenario where the brewers are just scared the flavors might not be ready in time and that the concern turns out to be unfounded.

How pissed are people going to be when they miss out on variants at DLD and then 2017 variants start popping up for sale at Warpigs....

from what I recall, and i could have missed it, i don't think FFF ever stated variants were included with every ticket this year BEFORE they posted that everyone won't be guaranteed a variant. so if they never stated that they were included, and they never have before until last year, why assume they were?

i think since last year a variant was guaranteed to everyone, the assumption was that it would be the same this year. but keep in mind last year was the 20th anniversary of FFF right? so maybe the guaranteed variant was in celebration of that. they hardly ever put out much information (the DLD twitter handle isn't even active this year) so its easy for speculation to run wild, as it currently is.

I'd attribute it to them realizing they have way too much beer in storage, and it isn't getting any better, and they need to find a good way to get rid of it.

Isn't it just as possible that the footprint of the fest has changed and they decided they could fit more people into the site and sell more tickets?

Maybe they just had a new lawyer who suggested adding it to be safe.

This is the best theory to me. They told e-tickets to sell a certain number, they realized they didn't have enough variants and removed the guarantee.

Or maybe the yield on the barrels was lower than expected. Or maybe some barrels/bottles broke. Or maybe something did get infected or isn't ready yet. There are a lot of possibilities.

I certainly wouldn't put any stock in some random Internet dude telling a story. Especially the vanilla rumors. That reeks of someone in Group B trying to trick some people into passing on it, or trying to buy it at a discount after the fest.
