Funny you mention Michigan as a beer mecca, but Colorado, who holds the Great American Beer Festival with a ridiculous amount of ******ed good breweries (Avery, Odells, Dry Dock, Left Hand, Oskar Blues, Boulder Beer, Great Divide, New Belgium, Equinox, Upslope, Tommyknocker, Elevation, Twisted Pine, Crooked Stave, Bristol, Breckenridge, Funkwerks, etc. to name a couple) is looked over. Congratulations...

I want to correct my original post, I meant to say "Some of the stuff..." I apologize for the bad grammar. So much for trying to multitask. :slight_frown:

I think Colorado has to be up there...

I'm also pretty partial to my neck of the woods and say Georgia and Florida both have some pretty good stuff out there.

Absolutely agree! Was up there a few weeks ago and picked up a few cases of Heady. Long story was originally up there for the Hill Farmstead Fall Fest and that never transpired, but, I'll be back the end of November and will be hitting all the places I missed. GREAT beer scene up there!!

You bring up a great point. As, in my original post, I was only mentioning a couple examples, I would agree that Colorado is up there as well. Avery, Oskar Blues, and Great Divide are very world renound breweries. My intention was not to mention every single world renound beer state, but to highlight the underrated states in this post.

Alaska. Midnight Sun, Anchorage, Alaskan, and several nice, and lesser known, brewpubs.

Amen. Conversely, Iowa sucks. But I digress... Minnesota is a honey hole. Washington has a long list and Oregon has a coupla players (Deschutes, Rogue)...

I think another state that is really underrated is New Mexico. I spent two weeks there a few months ago and the beer was awesome... never really hear anyone mention La Cumbre, Marble, Santa Fe, Chama River, Second Street, etc. Has some rural areas with little beer, but what they have is awesome!

I've liked a lot of the stuff I've had from Hoppin Frog, Rivertown, Mount Carmel, and Great Lakes from Ohio so that state would be up there. I've also liked a lot of the stuff I've had from Olde Mecklenburg, Mother Earth, Duck-Rabbit and Natty Greene's out of NC too.

Indiana, and not because of Three Floyd's (they are in their own class, and are from Illianda).

Flat 12 is killing it right now. I swear if they ever bottle Walkabout Pale it will make half of Indianapolis go broke. Their Flat Jack Pumpkin is crazy good (and the only local pumpkin). Half Cycle is doing really well. Their draft only stuff is innovative.

Sun King has some great draft only beers. One collab with Oskar Blues and another on the way soon.

Upland has their lambics (they need to make a sour pumpkin beer ala Alpine Ichabod . )

Triton is also excelling. Railsplitter IPA is great on draft. I've been told their other draft only beers are very good also.

Bier makes some nice beers as well but they have only bottled one beer to date, albeit a nice English Style Barleywine.

Have to disagree. Was just in SLC recently and talk about a dead scene (Empty streets at 7?.. beer options from 4 states if you're lucky). They put out a few decent 3.2 pales, which is not a huge accomplishment and the occasional Squatters/Epic hit. It's like saying the Cubs are underrated because they have sucked forever but they managed to beat out Houston this year.

Shiner is not good to me but all the others are pretty good breweries. I would also add (512), Live Oak, Southern Star, Freetail, Franconia, Ranger Creek and Deep Ellum. Now this I have had beer from all of these and really enjoy them a lot. I also enjoy some rare released Rahr's beer and a few seasonals.

I have enjoyed travel in Washington, Oregon and Colorado this year. The time in Utah was short. The Epic beer I had in bottle was sub par. The beers at Moab Brewing were fine, considering the alternatives.

I hate to sound like a homer, but there are some really awesome beers coming out of Minnesota. Sure there is Surly, but we have some killer brewpubs, and some small breweries putting out some awesome specimens of liquid alchemy. Steel Toe, Harriet, Fulton, and Lucid to name a few, with some other up and coming breweries. Joe Pond's one-man operation at Olvalde might be Minnesota's best kept secret. Even well-established breweries like Summit and Schell's are releasing some really cool one-offs with their Unchained and Stag Series.

Some beer in Vermont is very well recognized. But that is pretty easy when Vermont has the best dark beer in the entire world right now.
